This place is a gem!! I went into Scrap today to pick up some random art supplies and found everything i was looking for. Terrill Cain was very helpful!! i was getting lots of stuff so i needed a little help moving everything from the shelves, to the register and out to my car. I came here on a Tuesday and had no trouble finding what i needed or getting folks to help me. I think they can be busy on the weekends but in middle of the week was easy to park my car and be in and out with exactly what i needed. Thanks again Terrill!! read more

This place is truly one of San Francisco's hidden gems. A friend recommended it a while back, but I had no idea all the treasures I'd find for my homemade Christmas gift project. I walked out of there with 8 wooden blocks, 2 bottles of tempera paint, 3 old National Geographics, 2 rolls of wrapping paper and some fabric scraps, all for only $10! They just take a look at your basket and name a price. I love it. It was an adventure finding the place, but totally worth it. I could probably spend all day there and make millions of collages and silly crafts projects. read more

I really like SCRAP for the following reasons: -You can find cool things you need and it is usually very reasonably priced. -Cool tiny glass bottles. -Hilarious old greeting cards. -Rubber stamps. -Never crowded. -Great to find paper/office stuff. -Toys! -Random stuff--huge pink plastic diaper pins, empty coffee bags, markers, water colors, frames, buttons, fabric, journals, old signs, tins, pieces of wood... -I don't feel like I've been ripped off ever. -Staff is nice and friendly. -Good cause. Check it out if you like crafting, scavenging, building, sewing... read more

This is one of the greatest places in the city. You can find just about anything you want here. Things I got..... for $10----they look at what you have and tell you a price. 1. White washed over Canvas( freaken wounderful) 2.old wine corks 3.old slides(nature stuff) 4. mat boards( 2- textured paper, the other a new package of do it your self ones) 5.And the BEST thing ever--- a tote bag that reads "YELP is AWESOME!!!!!!!!--- how perfect id that. read more

WOW!!! I can't believe I've lived in San Francisco for 16 years and have never been to Scrap! (What a shame!!!) I was a bit wary given the recent string of bad reviews over a certain older woman who works there, BUT everyone I encountered was *extremely* friendly! I must have had a rather dazed look upon entering b/c I was asked if this was my first time at Scrap (yes!). The man graciously gave my 4 year old daughter & me a lovely tour! I was surprised & impressed at how organized each section is (I was expecting a big mish-mash of stuff, but not at all). I was also worried about pricing as very little is actually marked, but again, very happy! I (over)stuffed a large Trader Joe's bag full of treasures and it was all only $6!!! I will be back for sure AND I'll bring loads to donate next time, too! Check out Scrap, it is awesome! read more

Its like going to a yard sale, year round. Cheap fabrics. Sometimes they get shipments of printmaking supplies. If you like to scavenge, this is your spot. read more

Well organized (as these places go), and the stuff that is truly junky is marked as FREE. Thank you Scrap for recognizing the value of just getting rid of stuff! The whole family had fun browsing and we left with a bag of materials for $12, good value if not the deal of the century. To me the vibe was much less self-conscious and aloof than at the Depot for Creative Reuse. I liked it a lot, and we'll be back! read more

Love, love, love this place! Way more compact than the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse, its East Bay counterpart, tighter squeezes all around but that just means more scrounging and digging. One highlight compared to the EBDCR is that SCRAP has a free section with binders and boxes and stationary. This place has so much fabric! Quilters and anyone into making clothing this is your stop! I found a whole box full of trinkets, scraps and things I needed for planned projects and was only charged $10. There are also store cats that like attention. Places like this need to be supported (through shopping and donations) because they are they truly green place for creativity, do it yourself and craftiness. This is a little out of the way from the rest of the city and I recommend, doing the less green thing, and going by car, hey you can buy more that way too. read more

TJ was sooooo helpful!!! He was amazing, he really went out of his way to help us. Scrap is a treasure trove of craft supplies and findings. This is the place to come for inspiration. read more

This place has been on my list almost since starting out as a teacher 6 years ago. I'd heard of it through a coworker because she had raved about finding the most perfect things there for her classroom. I finally went this past summer, and found what I needed. It took me a while, but I finally got what I needed and promptly left. If you like scavenging through shelves and aisles of stuff and stuff and stuff, then this is the place for you. Maybe I was tired from working in my classroom earlier that day, but I felt like I was in some alternative universe where socks go when they're lost in the dryer. Okay, maybe I was in a foul mood, so here are the positives: -shelves are clearly labeled -"departments" or like-minded items are kinda close to each other -new and hardly used items can be found; like the mouse pads I got for 5 cents or the boxes I got for math manipulatives (kinda like cigar boxes) read more

Heart this place. I only wish I were craftier in order to take more advantage of the amazing stuff they have in here. But even if you don't have a single crafty bone in your body, you can't argue with cheap prices for basics like office paper, notebooks, paperclips, staplers, birthday cards, envelopes, etc. Seriously, the next time you've got a hankering to go to Office Depot or Staples, stop by here first. And for those of you who ARE craftier -- be careful. You may lose lots of hours amongst these aisles. read more

"....uhh, are you sure this is the right place?" My BF asks of SCRAP the first time we attempt to find it. SCRAP is in a warehouse of sorts, in a not so nice part of town. But inside: TREASURES galore! Of course, you do have to kinda snoop around a bit. Need 100 old slides for an actual slide projector? SCRAP's got it! How about some wrapping paper from 1983 (that still has the original price tag on it?) No problem! How about some realms of unopened legal size paper? But of course! Awesome place to visit if you are looking for anything weird, strange, or just some cool pieces to do some crazy art with. Best part - the pricing. You get to the checkout counter, and the folks there just kind round up a price for the stuff you got. Excellent. read more

I like perusing other people's shizz. There, I said it okay? And I like a good bargain too, so me + Scrap go together like Bill + Hillary. We get what we want from each other. I came home today with a serious shoppers' high as I laid out on a table almost 2 hours' worth of scrounging: - (6) green glass bottles of some Italian Perrier-like brand - (16) blank ivory cards and envelopes like the ones you see at Blick - (5) illustrated greeting cards and envelopes - (6) spools of thread - (3) rolls of ribbon - (200+) business-sized cards with a cute pink leaf print on one side, cream on the other - (1) candy jar in the shape of a pumpkin - (1) rubber ducky - (1) huge bolt of pink fabric I lay it all out on the table and the lady looks at the pile and throws out a figure. So guess how much! Guess!! TWENTY F-ING DOLLARS. $20!!!!!!!!! Could not believe my booty. And you won't believe it either. read more

Cash only! Great for teachers! I feel good about taking my own recycle drop -off scraps. I always make a list or have in mind what I'm going to be leaving with. It is hit or miss with what you may or may not find. Just a great place to save money on simple supplies, year round they have a good selection of paper, and fabric. Have projects in mind when you go otherwise you leave with your car packed, and no idea what you just got.. Don't try to make bargin deals with the workers, it is very cheap. The workers work on a tight fuse with people who want bargins.. Fun place to venture into! Tip: Wear closed toe shoes read more

This place rocks! One could lose a day in here. If you're even a wee bit creative or have hands, they have something for you and the prices can't be beat! read more

The #1 artist supply store in town. I've always loved walking in and wandering around the store, and my artist friends say this is by far the most affordable supply shop in the city. I've donated various painting and art supplies, and I'm sure they've been used to good end. I like the concept, and it's really a cool place to visit. read more

I visited SCRAP to donate art supplies used by my late mother: tools & materials for drawing, painting & sculpture that Goodwill wouldn't know what to do with. SCRAP is the place that knows. When I arrived it was the day of their monthly give-away to teachers (how cool is that!) -- luckily they were still taking donations. It's wise to call in advance to confirm that, as the industrial location can be "inconvenient" if you don't drive. Also, it helps to segregate any sharp items in your stash and inform the staff before they begin unpacking. I was grateful they accepted everything and hope the items will be useful to other artists. I haven't gone there to shop yet, but knowing the cost of new supplies, SCRAP has to be on every S.F. artist's go-to list. read more

I have lived in Potrero Hill for almost 3 years, and I keep finding the best hidden gems. Ok, it's technically Bayview, but not the scary part, it's in the industrial section, so don't not go because you think it's sketchy. SCRAP is the Goodwill of art/decor supplies. All of their stuff is donated (there's a guide up front that lists what they will and will not accept). Love this form of recycling and reusing! I bought a scoop of buttons for $.75 and several flat glass rounds for $.10 each. I have been searching etsy forever and could not find a deal like that. My favorite part is the sign up front that says if you demand a deal, you will not get it. I wish I could have had that posted when I worked retail, the joys of owning your own business. read more

You know that cliche, one man's trash is another man's treasure? At SCRAP, it's more like a lot of business' and individual's excess materials are some girl's cheap solution to many artistic endeavors. Sometimes I do art projects that require really specific elements. I have this idea of exactly what I need, but am not quite sure where to find it; recently I needed dozens of small, clear glass somethings to build a sort of disco ballish light fixture. Where the hell does one go when searching for such a thing? SCRAP of course. I found a bin of hundreds of glass little bottles, serious score. I love re-purposing discarded or unwanted items as art materials, and not digging through trash and recycling bins makes SCRAP my art supply Mecca. You can find the most odd and useless or practical and brilliant stuff here simultaneously. It really is all in the eye of the SCRAPer. Prices are just about right for the current economic situation; I usually walk out of there for under $5. (Two bucks bought enough old maps to use as wall paper for a room, and about 10 ancient Nat Geos for a collage... that cheap.) My only complaint about SCRAP is its location. I live very far away, and it usually takes two or three buses for me to get there. If you have a car, there is no excuse, go to SCRAP!! Save yourself any dumpster diving, and if the thought of Pearl even crossed your mind- forget about it... read more

I thought it would be a junkyard with stuff to dig. I was very very wrong. SCRAP is a dream for artists and crafters. it was somewhat organize and there were no piles to dig. I got a hugh roll of sign vinyl. at TAP, it would go for 1.50 a ft but here more than 50ft for $5. 50 pages of black stock profilio paper. $1 a bunch of stockphoto books for $5 apiece. only thing bad was someone took some of my stockphoto book when i wasn't looking. but can't blame SCRAP on that just the thief. Also 4 star because they are cash only. read more

@RandyC: SCRAP used to have signs up asking people to call 311 to get the trash picked up on Newcomb Street. The employees call at least twice a week, but people repeatedly dump truckloads of garbage right on the street. SCRAP doesn't have the staff (or the protective gear) to clean up giant piles of busted furniture, chunks of concrete, old TV sets, etc., that get dumped. Drive around the neighborhood - it's even worse on other streets. Please, write or call 311 and tell the city that that block should have a streetlight. Complain about the trash. Volunteer and clean. Hang out late at night in a windowless van and take pictures of the miscreants. Blaming SCRAP for garbage on the street is like blaming local businesses when someone walks past and spits on the sidewalk out front - except at least that can just be hosed off. -Not the owner, or director, just someone who calls 311 way too often. read more

I LOVE you SCRAP and if I could give you a million stars I would!! :) I get lost in the rolls of neatly organized fabric, its the best treasure hunting EVER. I call SCRAP my "happy place"! The best day ever is a trip to SCRAP and a Ritual Roaster coffee at Flora Grubb, I can't keep the smile off my face with that combination. The staff is friendly, the "stuff" is organized, the kitties are cute and its the best cure for the blues...There is no way one cannot go in there and not get motivated to create something cool :) read more

As a teacher I have been going to SCRAP for 19 years. I go once a month and find everything I need for my art and science projects. I'm a teacher with a limited budget, but I can buy high quality recycled materials for VERY creative art project at a very affordable price. I also make good use of the free materials up front and out side. I never feel guilty that wasting materials because it is recycled. The staff are very helpful. OMG where have you guys been ?,my entire life I never knew you existed !!! I initially went with friend and I couldn't believe the inventory,, I found a few things I wasn't looking for so that alone should tell you have great this place is.. There was the nicest staff person who I thought was cool as well as attractive.. 4 stars because it's a warehouse setting with a lot of flammable materials so the only suggestion I have is there should be more ventilation because it became to warm in there and it reminded me of the ghostship situation ... I will definitely return... read more

My god, stay away from this place! Walking down the aisles at SCRAP is highly dangerous! As you browse through the overwhelming selection of papers, cloth, yarn, glass, metal, trinkets, paint, glue, tile, wallpaper samples, bags, keys, and ten million other pieces of junk that only artists and DIY enthusiasts will see for the treasures they are, you will be overcome with ideas. Dozens and dozens and dozens of ideas. Plaguing you until you given in and load your bags with everything in sight. And what's worse? A whole bag will probably cost you around 8-10 bucks. You can buy enough crap to keep you well supplied for a year in one go, without breaking the bank! You'll spend more buying groceries. The problem with that, of course, is, well...where the hell are you going to keep all that stuff until you get around to using it? I know that MY place is a mess. I really need to organize this stuff. Oh! Maybe I could go back to SCRAP and find some materials to make into decoupage boxes.... ...@#$%^&*!! Stay away! Stay awaaaaayyyyy!! read more

This is a good place to go away from with stuff you don't need but you buy it anyway because it's so cheap. Creative people beware. You'll find yourself justifying buying old plastic end cap covering articulated snap over things that you have no idea what they were originally for but somehow you know you can make something cool with them. Then some of the stuff is brand new, still in the packaging, and you say to yourself, "Hey, this would make a great gift as long as the person doesn't find out where I bought it from." Forget about price tags. You pile up a bunch of stuff and bring it to the old lady at the front. She looks through it casually and then quotes a price that she just made up. I think I did pretty good at $2.25 for vampire fangs, two tin boxes and a dentist tool. They also have fabric, boxes, frames, paper, buttons, stamps, cards, tile, and more. I had to get out quick before I bought more than I could carry back home on a motorcycle. read more

So I still have not gone to SCRAP. However there is a sweet as pie african american woman who works there who always puts aside special stuff for my daughter. Love her. Wish everyone who worked there could practice just half of her kindness. read more

Shame on anyone who hasn't reviewed this establishment for the superb service that the young lady tending to the fabric bends over backwards to offer shoppers! i've been SCRAPing for many years and this is the first employee to independently acknowledge customers that I can recall. Her name is Dion and she only works a few days a week. Genuinely considerate to my every textile query, she gives me a ring when merchandise I might want, arrives w/ an uncanny ability to nail it, every time. Now THAT, is what customer service is all about! read more

After almost killing myself driving on the freeway (southbound 101, 3pm, friday, not a good idea) my friends and I arrived at SCRAP and to say the least, I had found a place that I know I will continuously peruse from here on out. Great tile samples outside, fabric, carpet, glass samples inside, and absolutely great stuff for artwork. I actually got a yelp.com bag while I was there too, a little surreal, but pretty cool. The lighting's not so great in there, you might want to take a flashlight or a head lamp with you for some of the darker spots (where all the stuff I want is), but it's completely worth checking out, even if you don't have any projects in mind. Got two huge carpet samples, two large glass samples, a leather sample, three shears samples, three braided grass samples and a bunch of beads for $6. The cashier basically looks at all the stuff you have and gives you a price. My friends spent $3 each on tile, fabric and trim samples. read more

3 stars for organization, layout, cleanliness, etc. Plus a jillion stars for easy to-work-with staff and laid-back vibe. The spot is a little crusty, but with the crust, comes THE DEALS! I scored 6x 24 "x14" primed, stretched canvases in really great shape for about $18. That's $3 per canvas, ppl. Would have been well over $150 new retail, so score... Also snagged a *deal* on some *super-bright* 11"x17" inkjet paper - 500sheet pkg had been opened, but still tightly stacked - cutting some of it down to 8.5"x11". Because I've got a Pacific Arc straight edge and self-healing mat and am down-to-cut, y'all. How I roll. SUM UP: Put on your Indiana Jones fedora and go find the treasures. It's like that. I will come here first before the start of any project. I have walked out with full rolls of elastic, cotton duck canvas, 25+ feet of framer's moulding, rubber stamps, heavy cardboard, foam core, a Surfer Magazine coffee table book, toys for my son and much more. It seems like no matter what you bring to the register, an armload of stuff will run you about $10. The place is fairly well organized by material, but as the title clearly implies, you should expect to dig around a bit for your treasures. That's the fun of it. The tile selection is good for mosaic work, and I can't wait to have a project that will call for me to dig into their button collection ($1 a scoop), Other notable inventory that I saw recently were intact panes of glass, wooden dowels, rolls of piping, some fabric paints, old books/magazines, bolts of fabric, barrels of wine bottle corks. And that's just off the top of my head. I did not encounter an attitude problem here in the least. The staff was friendly, and when I was carrying around my toddler son in an Ergo while shopping, I was asked multiple by them if I needed any assistance. read more

Scrap, I LOVE YOU! This place has so many lovely randoms! They're all scraps, hence the name, but you will find the coolest stuff in here! Fabrics, lace, buttons, clasps, zippers, paints, papers, toys, bits of wood and a bunch more. I'm one of those weirdos that can spend FOREVER looking around at every little thing. I wish I could give this place ten friggin stars. What a great place. Tons of cool stuff and ever changing variety of goods, all centered around crafting. All recycled, all the time. There's a couple of kitties which proves my theory about businesses with cats. (They are just better) and I can spend hours here going through bins and shelves full of arts and crafts mayhem. Its very organized for a recycled place...and I admire that. Cheers to recycling and the great place that is SCRAP. SCRAP is an excellent resource to find great deals, unusual and often unexpected items. They always have a wide range of weird leftovers, but you can't always be sure that you'll find the same things each time you visit. I've regularly found good deals on: -remnant fabric, yarn & notions -poster board & foam core -paper (from standard letter sized sheets to giant rolls of butcher paper) Know before you go: The pricing is as uncertain as the selection. I'm not about to try to figure out what their criteria and concerns are in making prices, but I imagine that they charge more for things that lots of people come in for which are donated rarely. I've been surprised by how incredibly cheap some purchases are just as often as I've been surprised at how much they expected for other items. In the end, I've found that even if it seems like more than I was hoping, it's still less than I would have to pay for new items anywhere else. The bottom line with their prices: Don't waste your time trying to haggle the prices lower. The staff usually won't compromise. The place is already operating on a shoestring, if you think it's too much, just don' t buy it. For larger and more industrial items, plus a wide range of used building materials, I go to UrbanOre in Berkeley. It's a similar shopping experience (including the prices), and since both almost always require a car, I usually hit them up together. It is possible to get to SCRAP via public transportation, but if you're taking my advice, ride a bike. It's a neat industrial neighborhood to explore. read more
