If you're considering different builders in the area, choose anyone BUT Scott Felder. Like others have echoed, this has been our biggest regret. They are very communicative and promise everything up until your deposit is placed. And then communication falls apart, and at this point I can't count how many deadlines have been missed. And forget about trying to get ahold of anyone for an update. We wish we had gone with Perry Homes! Edit: Delayed another month. Wish they were able to arrange for materials on time. We had the option of building a home with Perry last year, right in front of a beautiful park. We passed on the lot because they were honest about time frames, u like Scott Felder who projected an unrealistic closing date. I've spoken to another person who went with Scott felder two years ago and they were already having delay issues, and took over double their initial projected build time. The fact that they knew that there were already delays, and told me unrealistic dates, is insane. Meanwhile the home is sitting exposed to the elements, it's clearly falling apart. And again, I'm hearing of a lot of warranty issues occurring with Scott felder homes. I haven't even updated my wife yet about the new delays I'm afraid she'll kill me for choosing Scott felder. The entire process of building a home with Scott Felder has been a nightmare. We've been in the house 4 months now and have submitted warranty claims on each of these. (These pictures only include the front 2 rooms and half bath.) Most of these things were caught and pointed out prior to closing - they promised they would fix them after closing. I agreed since we were already 8 months past our closing date and I couldn't afford to keep living in Air BNBs. We stayed in a Scott Felder home and could not believe the shoddy workmenship! The railings on the patio have screws clear thru the posts with sharp, screw tips left sticking out to leave some unsuspecting person a nice gash; hopefully not one of their children! The painters left paint blobs and smears on the tile in every room with tile. Blobs of caulk are at the base of the bathroom vanity in one of the bathrooms. Caulking around tubs and sinks is uneven with dips and narrowing strips. The sod is beautiful but they didn't use a roller and make the ground even. read more

Update 7/7/17 We have only been living in our home for almost 3 months. We still have issues that were not addressed from our initial walk thru inspection back in MARCH. As we are living here and waiting for all our issues to be addressed we continue to find issues throughout the home. Issues that you wouldn't normally find in a quick 4 hour walk thru when you mainly looking for small knicks. We continue to find areas with excess glue and cement that we're not properly taken care of when they initially installed the tiles in the shower and in the floors. The baseboards were poorly painted and installed wrong. The door frames are crooked. We had shutters installed which made us realize that even the windows are crooked and not straight. Some are taller than the others. This is not something one could notice in a quick walk through. Our cabinets are still not fixed after 3 months living there but actually 4 months since we blue taped the issues right before closing. Some cabinets were rough and not sanded down! Our front door is not leveled and takes extra work to when closing it. Our mirrors were cheap mirros that the glue bled thru creating brown spots. That was finally replaced after 2 months. Point I'm making is a lot of these issues are due to jobs being done too quickly to get it done and sold. I'm really unimpressed with this builder. Not sure how they received so many awards. I wouldn't give one for our house. Maybe that's why it was on the market for almost a year. I still don't feel comfortable or as it is my home. I'm still having to look at all the blue tape all over my cabinets that are still not fixed. When I have guests over I have to explain why my house still has blue tape and why it's still not addressed/fixed since purchasing it back in march. Sad. Very sad and very disappointed in the poor craftsmanship. read more

Realtors and buyers beware! This builder is extremely unprofessional, all the way up to the VP of operations. I voiced my complaints on behalf of my client who left their office in tears. I received a 2 sentence reply from the VP! They clearly do not care about customer service what so ever. Doesn't make one feel very confident in how they build their homes. WORST experience I have ever witnessed. My clients felt like they were being sold a used car rather than a supposed " luxury semi- custom build". Scott Felder Homes builds beautiful houses in beautiful places so we thought we'd buy one, however Scott Felder made it really hard to do that. At no time did we feel like our time was valued or that our business was appreciated. I can't think of a business that's treated me more dismissively - they made the whole home buying process unnecessarily difficult. We made an offer on a house and the very next day the salesperson left town for a week without letting us know and no further response from Scott Felder. This gave us the impression that our offer was not taken seriously. There was no communication or response from them for a week - all the while we were calling them and getting the runaround. I guess they didn't like the number we offered but if that was the case it was not communicated very clearly. Everything would have been fine if someone from Scott Felder had just called us and said "we can't sell this house to you for $X" or counter-offered. So we walked away with 10 days of our lives that we can never get back and a pretty bad taste in our mouths for the way Scott Felder treats potential buyers/customers. I don't know why they made it so hard - they sell houses and we were trying to buy a house . . . oh well. If they had treated us in a more professional manner we might have considered buying one of their other houses. We ended up buying a home from one of their competitors in the same neighborhood and the deal was wrapped up in 36 hours. That's good business. read more

I recently bought a home from Scott Felder in the Stone Oak area (Terra Bella). The house was extremely well built. Both the sales person and the project manager were fantastic during the buying experience and the aftersales experience has been great. Any small snagging issues and they have someone out to repair or replace immediately. There were some finishing issues (hence 4 and not 5 stars) but these can be expected when they are managing a large team of sub contractors and everything was corrected very quickly. read more

Scott Felder at Santa Rita Ranch has hired a great team. Shane Wolf is my contact person who helped me in blocking my lot which is the first step. At the same time I got similar help from one of Shane's team mate Chris Dodd who helped me understand the process and making changes to the contract while Shane was out of the office. These two guys work very hard and give you 100 percent of their time to get things done for new home buyer. It can be better, that's all I can say. This is our first time building a custom home and we put high expectation during construction based on what they advertise "Carefully craft for you". Our experience some good, some bad. I am going to provide all facts that we had for me and my family. Good things Sales person was very helpful, she was able to get all the quotes on time and followed up with changes. She also helped us to get some idea of how to save money on certain design ideas. We really enjoyed spending time with her. Sometimes we just stop by and say hi. Designer in studio. The designer that assigned to us really understand what we need. She would immediately bring out attention if color or items we pick could be none sense. She also tried to make some suggestion of items that meet our budget. Superintendent for construction. He called me right away when potential issue may be occurred. Ex: The tile that we picked would not be completely look flat if we do 33% offset. He also tried to knock out the price for us when he got quote for our custom design stair way. Bad things: During construction: First we noticed someone did our air conditioner venting pipe drinking beer whole performing the work. Over 10 empty beer cans were found on construction site everywhere. We did address this and never happen again. After house closed we found certain rooms in our house do not have sufficient cold air blow out. Air conditioner contractor had to come and do some piping adjustments. Trash management. My wife and I had to come to construction site to clean up trash every week. We never have this problem when we build our old home. Poor contractor work quality. Certain walls, doors and front lanterns are not leveled. Paint job is no good compare to model home. Door trims are pretty much beat up with wrong nails. I decided to repaint certain area myself after moved in. I found gas leak in attic ..... twice with my nose. A lot of time we brought to superintendent's attention when we see potential issues. He wouldn't listen and just continue to build. We were told he was too busy and don't have time when we ask to meet or address issues. This lead some minor repairs after we moved in which caused lots of dust problem to us. A floor electrical outlet was damaged during installation. Contractor came back fixing it with super glue. Caulking work was poor. Thanks to this I became a calking pro because I re-do it myself for whole house. The worse thing ever. After we close the house the superintendent came to my new house and yell at me for not giving him good rating in survey so he can't get his 500 dollars bonus. After construction and warranty period: The response of repair call was really slow. We were told they had difficulty scheduling contractors due to sudden construction dement in this area. The contractors they sent over for repair was skillful and made perfect job. A lot of time my wife and I wish Scott Felder sent these people to handle construction at the first place so we don't need to deal with lots of messes. We had a long repair list but had to give up most of them because of slow respond. End up fixing them by myself We upgraded our fireplace and a trim was missing. Waited for almost 8 months for them to get one and installed. My 1 year warranty just expired and I found one venting pipe was not installed correctly during construction and tile grout in bath area start to crack. I don't even know if they will fix it or not. Suggestions: Please listen your customer more and communicate with their concerns. My old house contractor emailed me almost every 2 weeks asking me if I had any concern for construction. I understand there is no perfect house but having good communication with customer can reduce those extra work. ================== Follow up with this review. We were very disappointed in the lack of attention to detail that was afforded our home. When we pointed out concerns to the community builder, he would just nod and say "we'll fix that", only to find the same issues upon return visits. The community builder we worked with lacked communication and management skills, to make this a seamless process. Our concerns were finally elevated, but at that point we felt that if they presented substandard work to us as a finished product, what did the construction/foundation of our home look like? Our closing date was pushed back three times due to poor workmanship. Even after sending a comprehensive list of things to be completed, it took multiple visits for many of our concerns to be met. After speaking with one of the contractors, he stated that he had been at our home for an entire day and never received any guidance, so he just took the initiative to find things that he felt needed to be done and we ended up pointing out things for him to fix. When we mentioned that our concerns were not being relayed, the community manager said that he speaks directly with the owner and assumes they brief their workers on what needs to be done prior to their arrival. We don't think it's too much to ask to make sure clear and concise directions are given directly from the community builder to prevent any confusion or misunderstanding. Although we had 3 pre-close walkthroughs, the home was never presented to us in move-in ready condition. We were assured that the home would be cleaned and ready the morning of our closing. Unfortunately, we moved into the home to find paint on the carpet and floors, nicks in the cabinets, dirty toilets, scratched/scuffed kitchen and bathroom sink , crooked sockets, chipped paint and the list goes on. There was also thick dust and grit on every surface so we spent our first day purchasing cleaning supplies, spackle, caulking and sand paper and started working well into the first night in our home. After waking up sneezing, coughing, and congested, we decided to contact a reputable carpet cleaner to clean the carpet and floors. Thankfully, they were able to come out the same day and we were surprised by the sheer amount of dirt and grime that was pulled from our carpets less than 24 hours of moving in. On the day we moved in, we asked the community builder for a sample paint kit so we could do some spot painting. After a week of no response, we purchased sample paint from Home Depot; however, it was not an exact match. I called the community builder and got no response, so we spoke to the sales agent who relayed the message and we finally received paint a couple of days later. The community builder also purchased a wood pen from Walmart in the wrong color (dark walnut) to fix the nicks in our brand new cabinets (grey wolf). We contacted the cabinet company, and they provided us a correct color pen, wax pencil, and suggestions on how to remove the previously used pen. Unfortunately, we feel like we purchased a brand new fixer-upper as there are things needing attention that will require a contractor (e.g. uneven balcony upstairs, sink in powder room not centered, and uneven door frame). We have a significant list of "home improvement" projects for a home that looks like we've lived in for 10 years instead of 2 months. Although, Scott Felder reimbursed our hotel stay for almost 3 weeks, we feel that not only would we have closed on time, but we would be more satisfied with the outcome of our home if proper management and oversight were in place. The lackadaisical approach by the community builder ruined the experience of being a first time home buyer. He definitely took the joy from us. We will NEVER buy another Scott Felder home (or recommend anyone else to do so). Purchasing a home is a milestone event and no matter the amount of investment, the quality and pride in workmanship should be present. Mediocrity is not an option and anything less than excellence should be unacceptable. read more

In early 2014, my job transferred us to the San Antonio area from Corpus Christi. We spent a few weekends scouting neighborhoods that appealed to us. The one that we kept coming back to was the Lonestar community of Alamo Ranch. At the time, there were about 3 or 4 active builders in Lonestar. We visited them all. However, the Scott Felder model was our favorite. We liked everything from the people we met, to the available floorplans, to the quality of the workmanship (keeping in mind the model homes are usually built by their best craftsmen and professionally staged). Still, we were impressed. We chose a floorplan, a lot, and signed a contract. The wheels were starting to roll! I suspect it is the nature of the beast, but Scott Felder experienced a lot of turnover during the time our home was under construction. However, each SF representative we encountered was knowledgeable, helpful, and very easy work with. The most trying obstacle we encountered in the construction process was dealing with the design center. Our meeting with the design center to make our selections was originally scheduled during the week. Since my wife and I both work, we explained that we could not both attend during the week and asked if we could reschedule our meetings for Saturdays. We were told no, because the design center is not open on Saturdays. We then suggested evening appointments, and due to the amount of time that would be required, that idea was also nixed. It was only after Scott Felder intervened on our behalf that we were allowed to schedule our design center appointments on consecutive Saturdays. We've been in our new home a year and a half. One unexpected benefit we are experiencing is how energy efficient it is. Our single story home is about 2500 sq. ft. Utilities average $206 per month for electricity, gas, and water combined. Good job Scott Felder! Building a new home is a very trying experience. Fortunately, the people of Scott Felder are professionals who work tirelessly to smooth the many snags that always seem to pop up. They were always accessible and made the effort to address any of our questions or concerns. We are very pleased with our Scott Felder selection. It is very livable and comfortable and fits us perfectly. read more
