We are being forced to leave our apartment by September 1st. We need to find a home for our cat, Peeps. He is 7-8 years old. He's a nuetured male with issues. He was recently diagnosed as a diabetic and he does'nt use a litter box never has used one. He uses either puppy pee pads or an empty dish washer pan place in the bath tub. He is very beautiful and very friendly. He loves attention once he gets to know you. Please contact us with an answer as soon as possible or if you have anyone else who may be able to help. Wouldn't recommend this place for adoption. My mother went to see the cats and fell in love with two. We asked if we could adopt them and they just seemed bothered by people asking questions. They told us to keep an eye out for when they are available. My mother filled out an application, called her vet and then Scituate called her saying she has no record at the vet . My mother has used the same vet for my whole life and the vet said they never told scituate that. My mom called and tried to straighten it out and so scituate then told her too late, a lady is there picking them up now. We were so confused with no answers. Why would they have someone pick them up the same day but then send us through loops. Just doesn't seem like they are organized. read more

I have had a dog for near all of my life, today I have 3 labs. Ben came from SAS, he is a 12 year old black lab that was in rough shape. I went to SAS and talked to the girls there and said I was interested in BEN. they were GREAT and cared about Ben. I came that next Saturday with my two insane high energy labs to see how Ben would feel, SAS was not going to put Ben in a bad place. Next Saturday we can back and let them play together...4 hours later Ben came home... SAS was not done! I brought Ben back three times for Vet appointments and finally for his exit interview! While it's a crying shame in my opinion that any animal winds up in a shelter, it's of some comfort to me that this one exists. This is rather exceptional. Having just been rebuilt it's now a bigger and better space surrounded by a fair amount of land on which the dogs can be walked. Importantly to me, not to mention the animals, it's a no-kill shelter. My husband and I are loyal supporters of this place and if such a time comes that we decide we can take on another animal, that animal will most certainly come from this shelter. We just dropped off some cozy washable blankets as well as some Christmas toys and treats for the dogs. I'm appreciative of the guiding principles of good, loving care the Scituate Animal Shelter promotes. I like the emphasis they place on shelter adoption; the right animal for the right family. If you decide that you want a dog or a cat please go to a shelter. This one has many sweethearts waiting to be loved and cared for. And here's my plug even if you can't adopt: Consider a donation of time, money, toys, treats or any of the list of goods this shelter is always happy to receive. What a wonderful place to be if you're a cat or dog in need of rescue! Their slogan is "the lucky ones come to us" and it's true! They treat all types of animals with kindness and care. I adopted a cat who'd been in the shelter for nearly a year, and she was surrounded there by toys and beds and scratchy blocks like a wonderfully spoiled child. The staff is easy to deal with, engaging to talk to and really look out for the animals in their care. They're careful about placement and consider your application thoughtfully. The shelter is spotlessly clean in both the public and pet areas- a big plus to see! If anyone is ever thinking of adopting or fostering an animal I urge you to seriously consider the Scituate Animal Shelter they do an amazing job and they take such good care of all of their animals.. we went through the adoption process for chickadee( in the picture)and they made sure that all the puppies in the litter went to the right families they made sure that they all had their shots and medication extra medication for any type of skin issues they've provided us with food and treats and toys and it was just such a good experience they truly love their animals and they go above and beyond to take care of them I've never been to a shelter before that was that thorough!! read more

Definitely recommend Scituate Animal Shelter if you're looking to adopt a furry friend. I had been looking at other shelters closer to where I live but there were no kittens available. Then I stumbled upon Scituate Animal Shelter online and decided to check them out. The entire process was pretty quick. I submitted a survey online and someone contacted me right away. Although the kitten I was originally interested in was no longer available, I decided to go in person to fill out an application to be approved. After I filled it out, they called a couple days later to notify me that there were kittens available. I visited the next day and met with the kitten and was told I could take him home that day. I didn't expect the whole process to be so quick and easy, but it was! They take such good care of the animals there and make sure they go to good homes. The facility is also very clean. All the staff was friendly and informative. They gave me a folder with information including my kitten's medical record and when his meds and vaccines were due. I definitely plan to come back when I decide to adopt my next furry companion! read more

I'm one of the two training directors at New England Dog Training Club, and a certified dog trainer outside of Boston. Scituate is one of the few shelters I recommend for the following reasons: 1. Behavior evaluations: Instead of just sending cats and dogs home, they make sure it's going to be a good fit. Animals are complex and making sure a family with kids is adopting a dog who likes kids is a great place to start! They do everything they can to ensure the dogs and cats are going to a forever home and will succeed. 2. Support: They have trainers and qualified help on staff and have resources to give to people for training. 3. If it doesn't work out, they don't judge you. Sometimes, even with behavior testing and hoping for the best, maybe the dog who loves kids doesn't love YOUR particular kid (this happened to us). There was no judgement. We all wanted the dog to go to a home where he would thrive. The shelter has continued to be on the lookout for a pet that will be suited to us and our very specific needs, and they are supportive. If someone is bummed out that there are restrictions (no electric fences, don't let cats outside, etc), it really is for the overall welfare of the pets in need. They follow all recommendations from the American Veterinary Hospital Association, International Association of Behavior Consultants and the Council of Certified Dog Trainers, to name a few. They are accountable, the dogs and cats are happy, and the feral colony has indoor and outdoor (fenced-in) access for safety. This shelter does it right. Adopted a kitten from here about a month ago. They were great to work with . We saw a posting on facebook for our kitten and sped down there the following day to meet him . There were a few cats/kittens we met while waiting they were all well taken care of and in nice clean areas . The staff was amazing . There was one women who was a little on the snottier side but i didn't care i was excited to be getting a cat . We adopted and brought home our Mushu that day , we left with a few cans of kitten food and a small bag of dried food . We returned a week later with some donated goods as a thank you . When we are ready to add to our fur family we will return ! read more

We love SAS! I started off as a volunteer Dog Walker three years ago (time has flown by!). And it's been an absolute pleasure waking up each Monday morning to see all my friends (human and fur). Then we fostered a dog for a hot second before we adopted him. SAS has brought so much joy to our life from the volunteer aspect but also from our newest family member. He is such a wonderful baby brother to our Weim and the adoption process was seamless. Highly recommend SAS for rescue and all of its services it provides to the south shore community. read more

Their heart is in the right place. I know that and I keep telling myself that. But they make my crazy. They are absolute in their opinion on what is acceptable for pet ownership and ANY deviation from their view is unacceptable. We were turned down for getting a cat because we would not sign a document guaranteeing we would keep the cat indoor. I don't agree it is the only way to own a cat. They have cats in there for years, deemed un-adoptable so they live their lives in cages, (some have moved with them from the old place on the Driftway). That sounds an awful lot like a life sentence and a far more certain and crueler fate than the potential risk of cars or coyotes from being outside occasionally. There are thousands of perfectly healthy cats and dogs destroyed every year because they cannot be adopted. Setting up artificial road blocks to control/limit adoptions is not helpful to their animals and especially not to the animals they could find homes for if they understood their view was not the only one. I know, I know, I could have lied to get the cat but would not. We instead got a wonderful cat from the Marshfield animal control officer. He's doing great and is a loved welcome addition to our family. Otherwise, they do a good job. The animals are clean and well cared for. read more

I adopted one kitten from this shelter, as well as one of my close friends! The staff here are very welcoming and show true care to the animals who are there. I love coming in and seeing volunteers and smiling faces. Adopting my kitten was an easy process and I couldn't be more thankful to have him! It's great to have a local animal shelter and I encourage those people looking for a new buddy to adopt, don't buy from a shop! My Grandmother has been looking for a dog. This shelter always seemed like they wanted to help and my mother had gotten a dog from them, but every time they showed my Grandmother a dog, there was some reason she couldn't have them. Twice they showed her a dog that had already gone out for a 7 day trial and the owners were just waiting to sign paperwork and twice they showed her dogs then all of a sudden something came up with them and they had to go someplace else. And on top of all of this several times they told my Grandmother they would help her and call her with news on a new dog just to have my nana have to call them and find out something happened with that dog and they forgot to call her. I am very disappointed with this shelter and hope that this review is actually taken to heart. But I won't be surprised if it isn't. read more

A remarkable organization. This no kill shelter is an impeccably clean, new facility that gives animals the opportunity to socialize outside their cages. The adoption interview and matching assessment are sensitive to the animal and receiver's needs with the end goal of a successful match. The animal is sent home with their pet bed, toys, medical records, dry and wet food - everything to get you started. There is a counselor who remains available for the life of your pet.
