I ordered 2 yards of garden mix soil. A friend referred me elsewhere but I thought I should spend my money in my community. The guy who dropped the soil was great, very mindful of where and how to drop it. The soil has so many bits of plastic throughout it. Here I chose nice wood without chemicals and now I spent $130 (with delivery) to get soil with all kinds of junk in it. It's a few blocks away but I won't shop there anymore now. read more

Nice plants and trees. But seemed to be more of a contractor focused business, not for individual customers.

They close too early in the day and always change hours. Showed up for materials and they were closed at 4. Been coming here for years but last two seasons they have been on a steady decline in customer service and product availability. Treat me like an annoyance rather than a customer. Always put me on hold indefinitely if I call. Looking for alternatives. When I find one I won't be back. Also purchased almost 40 large patio stones at around $30 each. They were delivered in a closed pallet. When I opened them up three were broken and unusable. They would not return or exchange since it wasn't reported at time of delivery even though there was not way to know that without opening the entire pallet and removing them all. Driver wouldn't even stick around to find out. read more

AWFUL! AWFUL! AWFUL! Went there today around 12pm to order rock as we have ordered before and had it delivered to our home in Chicago. I didn't have my exact measurements so the lovely woman I was talking to gave me a price list and looked up my zip code for delivery fee and told me to call back with the measurements. I called back about 3:30 and was told they couldn't deliver to me because they were short staffed and we lived far. I asked how that changed in 3 hours and was told she didn't know what to tell me. My husband called back and asked about scheduling the delivery for next week and was told "I don't know, call back then." So basically our business isn't wanted because we live far. Our house sits on three city lots and we're constantly doing something in the yard. These people will NEVER be getting my money. read more

My husband and I came here for our landscaping stone, a majority of our plants, flowers, and shrubbery as they have a wide variety to choose from. When we first started searching for what we wanted to plant in our garden area, I had told our sales representative, Julie, we wanted to attract hummingbirds, butterflies, etc. The minute we told her our ideas she started to suggest different types of hydrangeas, roses, lilac, just to name a few. Needless to say, we went with every one of her suggestions. She was very knowledgable on how to care for the plants, which plants to place where, and how to maintain them so that we get looking their best. Now, with 2 full seasons in with the plants, and instructions on how to care for them, we have hummingbirds visiting us and butterflies coming around. One of the trees she recommended, the Gingko Biloba even attracted woodpeckers. With the different types of birds that have been visiting, we bought feeders to keep them coming back. It has been really cool birdwatching from our yard We owe some credit to Julie for the beauty of our personal oasis. read more

The first time I ventured into Schroeder material and loved the selection of their product .The staff all were helpful,went out of their way ,answered every question I had .And even gave me a mini tour of the place ,very large .The selection is amazing if you can't find what you want here you're not looking.After I spent some time there ,my wife and I found some mulch we really liked .We were so impressed with the quality and the helpfulness of the staff we ended up buying 12 yards ...we scheduled a drop off time and paid went home .And true to the Schroeder's word the driver pulled up on time the day which was promised and a phone call to inform us he was on his way to boot ..Wow ,hard to believe,quality ,knowledge,drop off and the family atmosphere.I would recommend them in a heart beat ...So when you need some landscape go there by the way we live in downers grove.. read more

Incredibly friendly, knowledgeable sales lady. I ordered firewood for delivery. It was the cheapest I found and they delivered it in just a few short hours! Unfortunately , the dude who brought the wood to our house backed his truck up, literally dumped the wood (and whatever else was in his truck) onto my drive way and then drove away. I was left to not only stack the wood (something HE was supposed to do) but also clean up the the left over mulch and gravel that was dumped onto my driveway. read more

The staff here are very moody and have the worst attitudes I have ever dealt with anywhere. Not only do they have an attitude but I have also over heard them making racist comments on some of my visits here. read more

We came here for a patio project. We had excavated a large amount of dirt which we needed to dispose of and pick up a ton of gravel. Price wise this was a good deal. The disposal was $20 and the ton of gravel was $30. However the service was pretty bad. This was the first and last time I will be coming here for any future projects. First of all, we pulled up in a tuck and I left my fiance driving but she idled in front for a couple minutes because we had a load of dirt and we wanted direction of where to dispose of it. The lady who I was speaking to as well as another gentleman made a few remarks with bad attitudes about the truck. "Learn how to park" was one of the lovely tips we were given. Its not like we left the truck unattended, she was there if someone couldn't get by, even though there was room to pass up next to her. Their attitude was nasty. It wasn't a big deal but instead could have simply said, "would you mind moving the truck for a minute, thank you." Finally they made an issue of paying credit for the entire order. If your business takes credit, then it takes credit. When we had called they said they took credit. However, when we got there they said they would only accept cash for the disposal and credit for the purchase. Finally after a few minutes of explaining that I had no cash on me and then stepping outside to ask my fiance if she had her wallet with her which she didn't, they finally agreed to accept the credit as payment for the entire order. We ended up going to a landscape supply store next door for the rest of the project's supplies. This was just a bad first impression. read more

Was calling around for facecords of firewood on a Saturday, most places were either closed or had a 4-5 day wait period. Shroeder's was: A) Least expensive by $35 B) Had it delivered in less than 2 hours C) Gave me the option of stacking it myself or charging $25 for stacking. I got my boys to do it for $5 each and saved $15. Wood looks aged and dried, we'll know for sure once it gets cold out. read more

Customer service is pants. Closed Sundays, only open until 5pm weekdays, telephone sales was unhelpful and borderline rude. They keep no order records so you can't just say same as last time please. If you're willing to deal with the indifferent customer service and the 20th century business practices, then you'll find that their product range is pretty good. read more

We bought firewood from here. It was the cheapest and it is good quality. We picked up our own wood so we can't comment about delivery. The people on the phone and the saleslady were all very polite. They answered every question that I had. We will be back for more wood. read more

This is an open letter that we'd like everyone to see. We want to make sure everyone knows about this family-owned, nearly 100 year old company, Schroeder Material, Landscaping and Garden Center. We had a minor problem with an order we'd had delivered, and all personnel couldn't have been more apologetic, accommodating and fair! A big thank you to Bill, the owner, office personnel, drivers, loaders, professional experts, in all departments, who always provide excellent service. Worth Illinois must be proud to have this business as part of their community. It's encouraging to see a "small" business, especially a family-owned company, continue to be so successful! It's obviously the personal service and products that the big box stores don't give you.
