We loved this place. What a great tour! I was fascinated by the making process, storage process and finishing! Amazing. We had an afternoon tour with Francesca and she was wonderful. I enjoyed seeing photos of their wine featured at many presidential functions throughout the years. I asked a ton of questions and learned so much. The cave is so cool. This place is family owned and has a long history. The tasting was done inside the cave. We tasted everything!!!! I had so many favorites. The blanc de Blanc is my favorite. We really should've become members. Luckily they have some of their offerings at local shops such as total wine. But they have so much more ay the site. And it was completely no pressure to buy anything. Parking was plentiful. The grounds are gorgeous. It's a bit of a drive but totally worth it. Be sure to book in advance. Schramsberg was such a lovely experience for the books. We came on a day where it was raining, but felt that the rain added to the property's charm. It was also our first time signing up for a tour + tasting; I definitely recommend it here. We were guided around the cave, learning about their intricate sparking wine process and history. Our guide was hilarious and made the experience extremely lighthearted and fun. The tasting is done at the end, inside the cave, which we very much enjoyed. I like how the sparkling samples were exclusive to the tasting at hand, meaning that you wouldn't be able to purchase the bottles commercially. Of course this means we had to buy a few bottles! The selection was incredible -- ultra smooth champagnes across the board. We also got to try a sample of a red wine which was a nice bonus. Is maturing realizing that there are better and more competitive sparkling wineries other than Domaine Carneros? All jokes aside, Schramsberg really did wow us with their unrivaled hospitality, service, location, and quality of sparkling wines. read more

We had an amazing time at Schramsberg vineyards! It's a picturesque view as you drive up the narrow winding road to the tasting room area. The grounds are beautiful and there's even a couple of cats welcoming you to the property. When our tour started, we went right into the caves and saw all of the millions of bottles! Our tour guide did an incredible job explaining to us how the bubbles are made and how they use the traditional champagne method. We learned more about the grapes they use and even the difference between their regular lines and their higher end products that are hand riddled. This was such a cool tasting experience being in the caves while we tasted. I only wish we had somewhere to sit while we were tasting however, it was still a great environment and really fun to taste everything while we were among all of the bottles. We've had their regular Blanc de blanc before, but trying more of their library was so fun and we liked it so much that we joined their wine club! Overall, everyone who we encountered it that works there was so nice and you can tell they put a lot of heart into their products. All sparkling wines made completely via the traditional French méthode champenoise. All bottles hand riddled, cave aged, and naturally carbonated from two fermentations. You can never go wrong here with their fantastic sparking wine! They are renowned for a reason. That reason being their sparking wines can absolutely compete with champagne. Once you taste their blanc to blanc you will understand. My personal favorite was the blanc de noirs. I enjoyed every single sparking wine I tasted as most were refreshing and crisp! Not overly sweet thank goodness. We enjoyed our tasting on their lovely patio which was covered by a generous amount of foliage, perfect for a hot day. After our tasting we went back to the shop and were able to taste a few more which we ended up buying. The fourth winery on our Napa Valley wine tour this summer found us embarking on the first proper wine cave tour of our trip, Schramsberg, located up in Calistoga. Having been around since the 1860s, Schramsberg's caves were excavated with pick axes, and you can see the marks they made to this very day. Fortunately, their caves have held up incredibly well for more than 160 years where they store rows upon rows of exquisite sparkling wine. I felt a little like Charlie walking into Wonka's chocolate factory when the double arched doors opened and we entered the cave. T was an amazing guide who took us through the passageways that stored the sparkling wine aging in the bottles, stacked like jenga rows. It was pretty neat. As we went deeper into the caves, we discovered this moss like substance that had been forming for a while on the ceiling and along the sides of the cave that T described as lichen and said had many positive qualities such as indicating the quality of good air. They looked like spider webs that spiders in Australia spun. But we were told it is quite harmless as T specifies, the more lichen, the cleaner the air. We saw some very old casks that were apparently lost in a bet then won back the same way. We were shown how they get the yeast out of the bottle through a process called riddling. Then we had our cave tasting, which was magical as we had some cool reserve sparkling wines that Schramsberg only hold exclusively to the tasting room and don't distribute. Naturally, I bought a wine club membership. Schramsberg was definitely my favorite winery to tour and experience on my trip to Napa Valley. read more

I previously had no idea it was served at the White House state dinners several times over. Founded in 1863 by Jacob Schramburg made his home then his winery on Diamond Mountain. This winery has a great history hosting British royalty and US presidents. We were part of a private cave tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable. Took us through the caves and the wine making process and shared moments in history. Even how a game of poker played out. We ended in a wine tasting room, pretty fancy. The charcuterie was top shelf. Cheese was paired with the wine. Additionally had Spanish Marcona almonds, dried apricots and cherries. My favorite pairings were: Caminate del Cielo Noirs with Le Secret de Compostelle, amazing cheese. Jaime Estate Cabernet with Prairie Breeze Cheddar. Not really a cab drinker but loved this. 3 years going to Napa Valley and this was the most unique winery and one of the best tasting on my top three. Here's why - the mountain setting and secret chambers of their wine creation process, the extraordinary quality and taste of the sparkling wines, and the scientific process shared with the group of how the wine was made. You can't beat this process put together. We visited this winery to fulfill our Sparkling Saturday trip and it was such a win. My favorite bottles has to be the 2019 Skywalker Blanc De Noirs and the Brut Rose (which are the final wine bottles on the tasting roster). Crisp, bubbly, some tint of fun grasp, and some sweetness to add. What makes the wine unique here is their filtration process and extra efforts to level the yeast for removal. And some bottles with limited bubbles help reduce the chances of harsh hangovers. I can see why this winery is many known figureheads' favorites. Going through the wine cellar in the mountains was such a cool experience to witness the creation process head on. The very first winery in the Calistoga region nonetheless. Keep in mind there will be an extra car ride up in this mountain to get to the wine cellar. If you're able to book more than one hour for a tasting, defintely do so. We had too much fun here and certainly wasn't ready for it to end. Happy to finally cross off this winery on our bucketlist that has been on for a long time. read more

Our party had a lovely time here. They have such a lovely spot hidden away off the main pass. There are cats on the property to control the pests in case you have allergies just keep your distance. It was amazing walking down into the tunnels that were dug out over a century ago. The history and ambiance inside was amazing. I felt as if I was in Meatloaf's music video "I Would Do Anything For Love, but I Won't Do That". Candles, lighting, even webbing (and your tour guide will give you the trivia on that). Out of all of the wineries on my birthday tour this is the one I was looking forward to the most because I'm such of fan of sparkling wine, period. We were a few minutes late to our guided cave tour and our tour guide was super anxious to get us started, which we later realized is because he had somewhere else to be because he bolted out of the parking lot before we left the tasting room haha. Anywho, the tour was amazing seeing the countless amounts of wine stacked up around the caves. The tasting took place in an enclave that didn't have bottles and was lit by candles. It had limited seating, but most of our group was ok with standing, I however took the seat. We didn't get to truly savor everything since our host powered through it all. I loved all the wines, sadly we didn't purchase any since it was a bit out of my price range and 3 out of the 5 you can only purchase on property, so even more reason to come back. I appreciated the history and care the wine makers have. I will be back! My wine score is based solely for my palette which favors whites and light reds. To Sparkle you have to start dark and cool. After many years in a cave and multiple processes it emerges as a fine, sparkling wine. For a science nerd like me and a girl that likes spelunking this was a must do tour. Unfortunately I don't like the bubbly so I can't really rate the wine. You can smell and see the history of this renowned sparkling wine maker with a tour of their caves. We were fortunate enough to come through during a very busy time and observe various methods used for riddling. Located in a very quiet area north of St Helena, you will need to navigate a rather narrow, but impressive driveway to this Vineyard. Scars from the 2020 fires can still be seen on the hills and demonstrates how lucky many were in this area to escape with their lives, homes, businesses, etc. A salute to the firefighters, from the owners, is prominent at the entrance to the main building. Upon driving up to the understated entrance you can still see the family residence, a historic home that was constructed without nails over 150 years ago. After checking in with our concierge, we were able to spend a little time in the lobby and read about the history of this fine vineyard as a representative of the United States for many a White House state dinner. We toured the impressive caves that house approximately 3.5 million bottles of wine. This winemaker uses hand stacking methods that are a combination of art and physics. We proceeded to the tasting, which was done inside the cave, and included a wonderful varieties of blanc de blancs, rosé, and some of the higher end offerings. Our guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and made the tour a great deal of fun. The sparkling wines at this vineyard rival fine wines from France's Champagne region. The tastings were spectacular and definitely made us want to come back again for more! When driving to the vineyard, the roads were very scenic. Once we arrived, it is a beautiful, modern day, country setting. We chose the Red and White Wine Cavern Tour. There are others, but this one grabbed me. Walking through the caves, I was admiring the thousands of wine bottles surrounding us. The red and white wines are delicious. I brought back home a sparkling white wine; 2019 Schramsberg blanc de noirs. Pretty much my favorite and will return again to try the other tours. read more

Third time attending the cave tour. We were excited to take a friend who'd never been. At arrival we were advised of a planned power outage but that the cave was beautifully lit up by candles so the tour would still happen. It happened but it was underwhelming. Flashlights for even some would have been good to aid in seeing what was above the inches visible from tea lights on the ground. The guide's flashlight could be minimally used because of battery loss. Feeling like when I received a confirmation call two days prior to the tour I should've been advised of the planned outage Also feeling like the winery could've done something to make up for this situation....discount the tour or a free glass of your favorite tasting or a taste of something not on the tour tastings. Really enjoyed our wine cave tour and learned a lot about how bubbles are made. I loved getting an education about winemaking process in addition to learning about the wines and property. We tasted four sparkling wines and one red. Our tour started in the lobby area where our guide provided history of Schramsberg wines, the gentleman who started it, and how they served U.S. presidents as well as the queen of England. We then moved into the wine cave and we were shocked to see the number of bottles lining the walls. Some of the walls had wine bottles stacked 10 rows deep and 15/20 feet high. Our guide explained that much of the cave was dug using pick axes. By hand. You could see the ax marks on the ceiling. Speaking of the ceiling, there were thick hanging layers of mold hanging. But not to worry, it was evaluated by an expert who proved that it was actually an oxygen-producing mold and safe for visitors. During our cave tour we learned about how yeast and sugar are added to the sparkling wine to create the natural bubbles. We learned about the "riddling" process that entails turning the bottles so the yeast/sugar is moved. And then the disgorging process where the yeast/sugar mix ("lees") falls into the neck of the bottle and then the neck is frozen to capture the "lees" sediment for removal before corking. This was a really cool experience and I highly recommend it to those visiting the Napa Valley area. read more

First stop on our wine tasting holiday was at Schramsberg! I've been a huge fan of their sparkling wine for some time now, so it was fitting to make this our first tasting! We chose the cave tour, guided by Jesus, who is a wealth of all aspects of Schramsberg, the history, the many vineyards, the cave, and the complicated process of making their wines. The cave tour was so interesting with the yeast still hanging from the ceiling, the unending bottles in their many stages toward the final product. While still in the cave, Jesus arranged for a 5 sparkling wine tasting and I honestly loved all of them! The grounds were absolutely beautiful. All of the staff we encountered were top notch and experts in their products. Such a great learning experience and can't wait to return. And yes, I joined my first wine club!!! Schramsberg is truly something special and unique not just for the location but the pre-prohibition history of it as well. The winery is nestled into the hillside of Diamond Mountain where the caves are like no other that I've seen in the valley area. Many wineries have caves (for all sorts of reasons) but Schramsberg is one of the OGs in this area in that they were literally dug by hand and are still used for winemaking and storage to this day- millions of bottles line the walls and corridors and are active production (not just for show). They have not covered up the natural structure with gunite but have instead preserved it in a pretty natural state which gives an even great perspective of the history but also makes it a bit eerie. Go on the tour- it's well worth it. All wineries have some sort of history but this one, I would argue, is longer and more storied than most. The wines speak for themselves. Dare I say that these are some of the best sparklings at multiple price points that you can find. We are no strangers to their wines but recently did a tour & pairing on a recent visit that was a lot of fun. The wines were phenomenal and we were able to try to some truly special items, including from their still label, Davies, which has amazing reds. The road up can be exciting (if you're into single lane, windy, mountain roads) and the property is gorgeous. Well worth the time to visit if you like great sparklings, history, and even some great reds. read more

We have been to Napa many times over the last 20 years. We have had Schramsberg many times but finally went and did a tasting. The experience was not great. Very transactional, it felt rushed and we ended early. Would not recommend as there are many others to try. We usually buy many bottles and we walked out without anything because the experience was so off putting. read more
