Today I took a more advanced class and we made farmers market tote bags. I was nervous but Amanda is such a great teacher. She shows you step by step how to do everything and explains very well. We have been looking all over Bakersfield for someone who can help our son who has a learning disability. We went for one full year in third grade of wasted time in school and struggling to get good grades. Which by the way had already started a year ago in second grade when he got a formal diagnosis of his learning disability. The school was VERY slow in getting us all the help he needed. We ended up using our own insurance (which we luckily have and a great one at that) to get the ball rolling... getting diagnosis, tests, evaluations and recommendations. And even after all that, an IEP took forever to get on their calendars so implementation of any services took forever! So on our own we searched but programs & tutors we found in California that we feel can help him are all out of town, no satellite locations in Bakersfield and VERY expensive. One day, we bumped into a friend we have not seen in a while and shortly after we started talking trying to catch up on how things are going on, we ended up talking about the kids and how they are doing. Coincidentally, both our boys are struggling in school with similar learning disabilities. And she had mention she found Karen and Jay Peavler to help her son and she had him started with tutoring just a few days ago... and that she is amazed at how much improvement she's seen with him. Like us, she had done some research for programs and tutors all over. So she explained to me what program Door of Hope offers that could be helpful for our son too! I got their information and I immediately called to set-up an appointment for evaluation to see what they have to offer for our son. We wanted to get him in and have them work with him through the summer. Our goal was to get him where he needs to be when school starts the following fall and see what kind of progress he's made or if there had been any improvement with his grades. School started and he was ready... at parent conference, it was good news... at the end of the quarter, we had a Honor Roll on our hands! And that went on until the 4th quarter! We had a Honor Roll student all year!!! He went from C's & D's to Honor Roll!!! It was amazing and I cannot explain how I felt to see how much he's achieved with the help of Karen and Door of Hope. I am always in tears when I talk about it. They use the Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes in teaching kids with learning disability achieve their potential. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for help for your struggling student.

For a year, their teachers highly recommended Door of Hope, but I was skeptical and I really didn't want to adjust my schedule. As time went on, they were failing. I thought I could do my own research and teach them myself, but that never happened. At the beginning of this year, I decided that I had no choice. In order for my sons to succeed and improve their self confidence, I had to give Door of Hope a try. Thank God we did. Within a few months, their reading level increased by grade levels. My boys were so confident in reading. They even improved in comprensión and math. I really hope that if you were like me, you give Door of Hope a chance. The education and help is priceless. This is the best gift you can do for your child and for their future. I know it is for my family.

I'm writing this to share my experience and hopefully help other parents make an informed decision…read more My daughter is almost 1 1/2 years old and has been attending Lil Explorers since she was just 8 weeks old. Unfortunately, since the administration changed in October 2025, the quality of care has significantly declined. There has been a very high turnover rate with teachers, which creates an unstable environment for the children. One of my biggest concerns has been safety. My daughter was repeatedly bitten by the same child, and there were multiple instances where I was not informed. I only discovered the injuries after noticing marks on her arms and legs when she got home. At one point, my daughter was bitten four times in a single day. I reported this to child Care Licensing in California, and they conducted a visit to the facility the following week. After that, I felt there was a shift in how my daughter was treated. I began receiving reports that she was "biting" and "fighting," which had never been an issue before--either at home or previously at the school. What's most concerning is the lack of transparency and consistency. On multiple occasions, I've received completely different explanations from different staff members about the same incident. Most recently, I picked up my daughter and found a bite mark on her hand that I had not been informed about, and I was given three different stories by three different teachers. While the director may come across as professional, my experience has been that communication is inconsistent and not always truthful. I strongly encourage parents to do their due diligence by looking up the facility's licensing history on the California state website and reviewing any complaints. At the end of the day, we trust these facilities to protect and care for our children. Based on my experience, I no longer feel confident that this center is providing the level of care and supervision that children deserve. I also want to add that my experience wasn't always negative. My son attended this facility from the time he was a year old and graduated in summer 2025. During his time there, I had a wonderful experience. The staff was always loving, caring, and attentive, and I never had any issues. It was truly heartbreaking to see so many of those amazing teachers leave when the administration changed, because they made such a positive impact on my child and our family. The owner and coaches are always available to answer questions and provide support. Josh, the coordinator, creates college-level routines that have led to their success at every competition.
