This place is pretty cool. It's walking distance from where we live and we don't drop by often enough. I needed a timer, so off we go. An hour later (you get caught up in all the eclectic items they offer). During the hour I checked out cat toys, dog toys, cards (fabulous collection of off beat greeting cards), cat litter, yo yos, dominoes, keys (they cut keys), gardening tools, pocket knives and many other items. We do not like to drive 41 miles round trip for brusque service. In order to make sure they could make a car key BEFORE wasting time and gas driving down from Fair Oaks Ranch, my husband called them twice. The first time he called, my husband spoke to a guy who said they needed to see the key first to see if they could do it. Fair enough, but they could have looked the key up first on Google or something. My husband forgot to ask how much it would cost IF they could do it, so he called back. A woman took his call and was short with him, as if she didn't want to be bothered. She snapped, "Oh no - we can't do that!" My husband told her he just talked to a man who told him to bring it down. So then she said "Oh, okay. $2 or $3." When he arrived and handed them the key, she took one look at it and "No we can't do that!" She was very abrupt. We would have shopped a bit for other things, we got the clear impression that our business wasn't wanted. For anything. They were not busy at all. I can understand that they couldn't make the key, but a little more kindness and perhaps some initiative to find out exactly what kind of key we needed would have gone a long way. Since they make keys, and are no doubt familiar with modern fob type car keys, a little engagement of the gray matter would have saved everyone a big hassle. read more

Not in my part of town, but whenever I am over here, I love to shop this Quaint hardware store. They have every unusual item I have ever gone in and looked for, and they have some very unique toys that are perfect for gifts for children. I never leave her there, empty-handed. read more

This is old school, and that's what I love about it. It's a one on one personal shopping experience. Something that you don't experience in a big box store. And the staff still greet you and are all so helpful. For such a small store it has a little of everything you will ever need. I'm not sure why I have not written a review before but Schnabels is worthy of a grand kudos . The friendly helpful staff sets a great environment when you walk in the door . They honor their product and service . I had went in to copy some keys I had mentioned that I bought a key there YEARS ago that did not work and they honored it by redoing it for me .... Schnabel's True Value - My new key. - Hardware Stores Near Me - San Antonio, Texas

Especially if you need a key made, the price is so much cheaper, and the service is so much faster than anywhere else in town. At Lowe's or Home Depot, you have to pick out and buy a key model before having it reshaped into your key. Here, they can just make your darn key, and it looks exactly the same. I'm sure they can't do every single key, but they're so much better than the other places. The same goes for service. You can ask, "Do you have limestone for potting plants?" and they'll say, "Yes! It's right here!" and not, "Let me radio someone and walk you half a mile across the store. We have 8 varieties. Wait, is this not what you wanted?" Obviously, if you need a really specific measurement of window blinds or something like that, you should go to the place with loads of selection. If you need something pretty simple though (washers, screws, caulk, etc.), I'd highly recommend coming here because it will take 1/10 of the time. They have their bases covered when it comes to things you might need and they know exactly where everything is. If they don't have what you need, they'll just tell you and not waste your time. I especially like their gardening section out back. The prices are very reasonable, and they have all of the basics. They're even willing to load heavy bags of dirt into your car for you. Friendly service. I like that the staff person I asked for help from actually WALKED me to what I was looking for instead of pointing. I do think the checkout process could be more efficient, tbh, so one star off bc man it was a long wait, but it's hard to be mad seeing people there treat customers like buddies. read more

The fact that I have lived blocks from this place, but never knew about it until my mom came to town and discovered it is just beyond me. We walked in needing some very specific parts for shelves we were putting together. The parts that came with it ended up broken after a failed attempt of setting up (why I typically don't ever try to build anything). Even though they didn't have that part *exactly*, they took what they had and MADE it for us. Literally, took the parts in the back and cut them, shaved them, etc to make them extremely similar to the original piece. If that's not some old-school beyond the call of duty customer service, I don't know what is. Of course, we left with toilet paper, cleaning supplies, a box cutter, and a Coke because this place is just fun to shop at. Being that it's right in my hood, I now know where I'll be going when I need a household item in a pinch and don't want to go to a big box for one or two small items. read more

I was NOT impressed by this place. Actually, I really WANTED to like Schnabel's since I am a big advocate for supporting small and local business. I entered Schnabel's looking for a painting supply to be greeted by, well, a none greet. The girl at the front counter barely lifted her head in acknowledgment of my presence even though it was obvious I needed assistance. And the older gentleman (I'm guessing, perhaps, the owner(?)) seemed irked and put out when I asked about an item they did not carry. Disappointed and, yes, even a little heartbroken, I left Schnable's and luckily found Kawl Paint on S. Frio. Kwal was highly friendly and helpful--review to come. For anyone reading this I have to say I will not revisit Schnabel's but maybe you will and have a better experience, proving my initial review wrong; but I suspect you won't. read more

As Jeffrey H noted, stores like this are going by the wayside. Since moving into the neighborhood (and living in a very old house in constant need of a fix-me-up) I have visited this place many, many times. There's something magical in the nostalgic feel of shopping in a neighborhood hardware store. Anytime I have a project, I just go in and tell the guys behind the counter and they seem to always now how to fix what I have broken. But beyond having the knowledge, they always have the parts and the time to help me figure out how to use them. Much appreciated. They also make keys, carry paints, and do a whole slew of other great things that make them my go-to home improvement store. Thanks to Home Depot & Lowes neighborhood hardware stores are going away. Stores like this are getting to be very hard to find. These are the types of places that repair lamps, provide personal, knowledgable help, and actually know how to fix things! Way before the big box concept change many venues. This store has saved my butt so many times! The people there are fantastic! The staff is always EXTREMELY helpful and I'm always surprised about the amount of products they have in stock. I've always liked True Value stores and the independent owner/coop concept. This store - Schnabel's - is the best of the best in that regard. Great mix of everyday needs and unique quality items. Friendly staff...I felt at home right away. It's got a good vibe to it and the prices are competitive with the big chains because they can buy as a coop.. The new owner has done a great job keeping it feeling small and friendly, while adding new items, areas (outside gardening center) and services. Maybe they'll even deliver! Hours are listed as M-F 8:30a.m. - 5:30p.m. I came at 5:10 and the lights are on and but the door is locked and the man behind the counter, who must have seen me parked right in front of the door, was walking away from the counter as I came up to go inside. I even called from the car as I pulled up. There was no answer and the machine was full and I could not leave a msg. I have been here two other times well before closing and the doors were locked. At least two other times I was treated rudely. I'd go somewhere else but I live less than two blocks away in Olmos Park. It's a shame that the business is run this way. read more

I went in to Schnabel's this morning to get some stakes that I had bought there before about two years ago. Three people up front , all texting, and I barely got acknowledged. I asked where these stakes were and the guy behind the counter pointed to the wall and said "over there". i went and looked and couldn't find them. No offer to help me find them. I wandered around a couple of aisles and no luck. I just walked out vowing to never return. Tom and his help were always so helpful. And with their prices higher than Home Depot and Lowe's one would think they would make more of an effort. I've gone there several times since these people bought it several years ago and the attitude has been the same every time-indifferent. Well I won't be going back. read more

I discovered Schnabel's over 25 years ago when they inhabited an ancient structure (now demolished) on Main Ave complete with wooden floors that sloped alarmingly towards the back. In my many visits I've never felt ignored by the staff. They always greet me as I enter unless they are attending to other customers. They are great at helping me find exotic parts to repair our 1920's home and they are equally good at letting me browse when I want to explore. If you're not a handyman (handy person) they provide friendly expertise. read more

waste of time. Dropped off screens for repair, was told would be 1 week. Called a week later, told would be done next weds. Stopped in and told repair was slow because one screen damaged and I should call next week. Called friday and told one screen is done and other 3 would be done no later than monday afternoon and that repair guy was going to call me to confirm. Never received any such call. Stopped in today to ask about my screens to which I was told they're not done and you can have them back if you like. Is that what customers want to hear after waiting almost 4 weeks? I think not! What I would have like was for them to do their job, or at least tell me up front it was going to be 4 weeks or more instead of lying to me each time I called. By the way they didn't even fix one screen as they told me they had, all four are still in disrepair. The old saying fool me once, fool me twice, never again! read more
