I'm not sure what drew us into Henne Hardware. But, as tourists, we were very happy we did. The variety of candles was terrific! One of my companions found a skull with a fragrant candle in it. I picked up a wax block to melt at home. The store seems to be split in half--one side hardware, the other decor, home items. The owner was very kind and gave us a lot of good information. I look forward to coming back and seeing what else happens in the store. read more

Really sad to see this place change it seemed to happen overnight, it use have a familiar old wood building smell and sounds of an old time hardwood store. It smells like strong cheap cologne when you enter and it stays with you. Gave my daughter a headache she had to wait outside. Why would they do this to this great old place? read more

We dropped in with family in town over the weekend and was met with great sadness to see the historical charm of this precious old hardware store disappear, we have been trading here for over 58 years & our family since they opened. Recently it was sold. Walking in you use to smell the old wood & hardware fare. Now it stinks of cheap smelling potpourri type candles like every other cheap shop taking over small towns, so sad. Change has altered so much in town but this place had held on to its total charm, now it's gone. It really will be missed in our beautiful town. Lost this local. read more

This store recently changed owners, and the difference is amazing! New manager, new staff, new stuff. They have a lot of "homey" home decor, good-sized paint department (I thought), and tools. When I was there, they were having a class to teach women (60-ish and up) about paint. Really cool! Spoke to manager John, and he plans to put in a drugstore-like soda fountain and ice cream counter. Loving it already! He and the other staff are very friendly, and he promises that every customer who comes in--man, woman, or child--will be welcomed and treated equally with RESPECT! I highly recommend this store and encourage everyone to check it out. Those who had a bad experience before the change of hands, I ask that you come back and let the nice people here show you what good customer service is like. I gave the store a 3 for unusual stock on hand and museum quality and old oak floors. However, I experienced a mix of courtesy in the owner and employees, especially noticeable when the only female employee went to lunch. I was in line to check out and when I got up to the counter the owner abruptly walked away to start a conversation with one of the male customers in the store.(I am female .) When I called out to him, he waved me off and said he would send someone up to wait on me and went with the male customer. I was eventually waited on by an embarrassed clerk . I should have walked out. Too bad the owner has such bad manners or a general dislike for women. Expect this will not change. read more

Incredibly rude to the point the clerk called me a bitch. I called 3 days ago to see if this hardware store had a common product. A woman answered and promptly said "No, we don't have that" without even checking. It's a little used product (lye) but common in mom-n-pop hardware stores. We came into town and I wanted to check for myself. They had 6 bottles on the shelf, so I bought them, wanting to support local business. I told the clerk about how I had been handled on the phone and that she could use some coaching on customer service. He immediately got icy with me and told me she's very part time and they were extremely busy Saturday. I told him I wasn't sure which day I called. I quipped she'll likely remain part time if her customer service skills don't improve. He threw my credit card across the counter at me. I was stunned and remarked about his lack of customer service also. He said rude customers deserve rude service! I took my bag and apologized if she was his girlfriend or something. He was walking away and shot at me over his shoulder, "She's my mother, bitch". Wow. Guess stellar service runs in the family. Too bad because this is a totally cute shop deserving my business. On my second trip to visit my husband (then boyfriend) in Texas, he took me to the most charming hardware store I've ever visited: Henne Hardware. I didn't know this at the time, but apparently, it was founded in 1857 and is the oldest running hardware store in the state. We only needed batteries, but I have to admit.. I had never before been as intrigued by a store that sold power tools, locks, hinges, and paint. (Amongst MANY other things..) The person tending to the store was such a warm and friendly person - ever willing to assist you with anything you might need and answer any questions you might have about the types of things you wander into a hardware store hoping to find. Whether or not you're in need of tools and such, the Henne Hardware Company is a great historical spot to visit if you're ever in New Braunfels. read more

I want to rate this place higher but unlike previous reviews, I got way below average service. The selection is cool and they have a collection of old toys that takes you back. I ended up buying a galvanized steel bucket and Texas shaped hummingbird feeder. Where it all went pear shaped: I had to look all over for an employee; I finally heard stirring in the back of the store. When I asked the gentleman if he could help me check out, he said, "I'll be up in a minute" in a "don't interrupt me" tone. I actually considered putting both items back but I didn't want to have to try to find them somewhere else. After the entire check out process all he ever said to me was, "here's your receipt." Seriously? I wasn't being rude. It was a beautiful day, I was bringing him businesses. What was up his butt? I know I'll be back in New Braunfels and I know I won't bother going here again. It's too bad, it could have been a really cool place but I already regret giving them the business I did. Never again. read more

What is wrong with the attitudes of these people?? As a local, and after having one bad experience after another with these employees/owners/managers/whatever, for over 18 years, I finally feel like spending the time to write about this place, so that non-locals/visitors won't waste their time shopping in a outwardly hostile environment, no matter how historically cool or eclectic the selection of items is, and no matter how much most of us feel a sense of buying local vs. big box stores, even if the pricing isn't that reasonable. Today was the topper. Wanted to show out of town Parents the funky selection, neat architecture, and the almost museum quality of the hardware store, and were immediately greeted with disdain from the hostile clerk. Loudly, "Is there something you're looking for?" Us, "No, thank you. We are just looking around." Again, loudly; "Close the door." Really? Get a dam door closer yourselves - it's a hardware store, after all. Even though one of us actually asked about an item, we were told: "We don't carry that." Found it ourselves, and went to buy it and were told, "Oh, we won't be re-ordering that, so you should buy all of them because they won't be here anymore." My first-time out of town visitors were shocked by the attitude and overall general hatefulness of this clerk, and as it has happened many times to myself over the years, hit us square in the face yet again. Just witnessed the owner yell and scream at a photographer for taking pictures in the parking lot, acting extremely unprofessional. Didn't know the photographer or the senior having his pictures taken, but felt really bad for them. I've shopped here before and wasn't impressed with the cat pee smell or the cluster of everything, but we definitely won't go back. read more

i went into the store to buy twine on aug.20 and was waited on by the nicest associate! the store was like a museum and i decided i'd come back on sat. i returned on aug. 24 and was greeted by the most sarcastic associate i'd EVER encountered in retail. sorry, but i don't automatically know who works there. i proceeded to try to buy what i needed and was patronized the whole time. i responded that i was a woman, not knowing much since i didn't use or do much curtain hanging. luckily, they didn't have enough product so i could gracefully walk out. when i called later to speak to a manager, the person answering the phone sounded flustered. i asked for a manager and he blurted "what do you need? i'm everything here"...okey dokey, i went to home depot where i was treated with respect and courtesy. never again will i walk into henne hardware. read more
