Schmidt's is my little Albany gem. $1 roll-your-own cigarettes? Yes please. The drinks are solid, priced right, and hit exactly how you want them to. There's live music now and then that gives the place a fun, cozy buzz without being overwhelming. It's the kind of bar you can post up at to study during the day (I've definitely done it) or swing by at night to hang with friends. The staff is always super friendly, no weird bar attitude--just chill, genuine people. The vibes? Immaculate. Laid-back, a little divey in the best way, and full of character. Whether I'm looking for a low-key solo afternoon or a casual night out, Schmidt's always hits. If I could give them more stars I would. Just don't forget to bring cash! They are cash only!

The best, that's why I am always here. Great spot, cheap beer and nice tobacco bar set up.

Places like Schmidt's are few and far between and should be appreciated because I would assume the economics of running such a low-key business must be challenging. With that said, there's only one reason I don't come here more often. Smoking. That isn't a knock against this familiar-feeling pub, but I tend to react badly around smoke even if it comes from a rarefied brand of tobacco. That's one of the major draws here for many patrons as there is a wide variety of tobacco in a series of jars. Inevitably there's a clutch of regulars partaking on the small patio. That's leaves the comfortable, cottage-style interior where there's a fireplace, armchairs and tables set up for intimate socializing. Wine and specialty beers are served, and I'm grateful they have Guinness on tap as that's my only draft preference. Alternatively you can do what I did on a random Thursday afternoon and get a cup of coffee (photo: https://bit.ly/35oWISQ). It's a cool place mostly hidden from the views of passersby, especially if you have a penchant for pipes. BEVERAGES - 4 stars...Guinness and good coffee, that's enough for me AMBIANCE - 4.5 stars...cozy and hidden away SERVICE - 4 stars...familiar, cash only TOTAL - 4 stars...like going to a parlor in someone's hunting lodge...if that lights your pipe RELATED - Strolling on Solano? First, let's all pour out a little liquor for the fallen soldier that is credit payments. Cash only. Second, let us grab some tobacco or a pre-rolled product. Then put it back. We'd just purchased some food from across the street but they only had indoor seating. Looked around for a park but settled here instead. They had outdoor tables and benches for smoking with ample people watching seats. So instead of getting something to smoke, I purchased a beverage or two and sat down. The smokes from the other patrons did not even come close to us as we sat on a lower tier than most. Dogs welcomed, as it's mostly outdoors. Regulars looked regular, settling in to their chairs. Sit back, relax and roll a few. Or don't. It's pleasant either way. Bring cash.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? If I had a Dallah for every time I've passed this spot I'd be retired now! Cold beers on tap... lattes, cappuccino hot teas, sodas etc even sake! Wow and a selection of good cigars, Padron being my favorite! No humidor... but they don't mind if you bring your own!!! Which on this occasion I did while enjoying a Trumer Pilsner on tap. I keep my travel humidor in the whip just for such occasions.... You know, running errands, doing house work.. heck it's to beautiful out to wash pots n pans! There are smoking sections out front facing Solano Ave and another in the back patio. I don't smoke cigarettes, but apparently it's a thing. Lots of patrons grabbing brewskis, and rolling their own from ample supplies of paper and accessories. Apparently even pipe smokers are welcome too! The kicker they are so chilled, accommodating and friendly, you can even bring food from the ample selections of restaurants all around here. I'm tempted to have door dash deliver one of these days! But frankly, I'm really here to chill, chat, smoke a cigar or two and drink tap beer or my favorite east brothers red lager which they also have in cans. One more thing... bring cash!!! I beg to differ with the last review. Schmidt's welcomed me both as a tourist and a local. I specifically sought out Schmidt's for pipe smoking supplies and fine leaf. In that regard John & his son did not disappoint. Tasteful mercantile of the basics to the connoisseur level of tobacco enjoyment. Great display of new and refurbished estate pipes from carvers around the world Oh and did I mention beer, board games, books, and banter? Beer at Schmidt's is most definitely not stale, they stick to what they move and they pour a perfect pint of Guinness... thanks Schmidt's for keeping it real all these years.

Incredibly unique experience in the East Bay! There ain't your normal pub. I thought the sign out front that said "tobacco shop" was just a fun branding thing, but it really is a genuine tobacco shop inside! They have a bunch for sale right in the back next to where they serve up their beer. Speaking of beer, I love that they offer just a few options keeping it simple and breezy. I was pretty full after dinner nearby so I really appreciated that they offer half sizes at cheaper prizes for beer. I got myself a half size of Guinness and my husband ordered the Speckled Hen beer. It was very busy on the Friday evening (around 7pm) we stopped by, but we were able to find a couple seats out front to watch the sun go down. Their patio is completely dog friendly and we were surrounded by the cutest of friendly pups just waiting for pets and affection. The patio was also the backdrop to a dozen cigar smokers and beer drinkers casually chatting it up and playing card games. The whole scene was just incredibly relaxing and the perfect spot to cap off a long work week. There are two bathroom stalls inside and street parking available.

Ask the Community - Schmidt's Pub

Do you allow cigar smoking there? If so can I bring my own while I drink your selection?

Oh most definitely! we sell ~ 10 cigars (A. Fuente, Hoyo De Monterey, PUNCH, Macanudo etc.) but you are more than welcome to bring your own if you plan on partaking in our other wares. We even have clippers on-site for use if you dont have your own.

    Do they serve food?

we do not serve food beyond chips, nuts and a few candy bars. You're allowed to bring some in though! just not a whole buffet, it must be reasonable and is ultimately up to the bartender on shift.

Exposed beams lined with old Richmond street signs, vintage photos, leather chairs, soft lighting. It feels thoughtful without feeling staged. You can tell someone cares about the details. The drink program is strong across the board. Good beer selection, a nice mix of wine, and a full bar for cocktails and spirits. What really impressed me, though, was the quality of the cocktails. They are balanced, well-crafted, and made by bartenders who clearly know what they're doing. Some of the best cocktails I've had at any bar, not just locally. The staff is friendly and genuinely helpful. You never feel rushed or overlooked. It feels like a neighborhood place that also happens to take its drinks seriously. And the patio is a standout. String lights woven through the trees, heaters for cooler nights, tucked-away seating that feels almost like someone's backyard gathering spot. It's intimate and relaxed, the kind of space where conversations stretch on longer than you planned. This is not a flashy club and it's not a pretentious cocktail lounge. It's a well-run, character-filled bar that brings people together. Richmond is lucky to have it. Five stars, easily.

It was a beautiful weekend evening and we sat in a room adjacent to the main bar in super comfy lounge chairs. This room is where karaoke and other events take place. There's great ventilation, and it's just quite honestly a great space to chill with friends, and also observe all the fun Richmond memorabilia. We also sat in the outdoor space, a super nice garden area that is well-kept and a great option to enjoy on these beautiful sunny days. I had a watermelon margarita and it was so fresh & tasty, I thought it was already summer! Friendly staff and environment filled with regulars and newcomers alike. They seem to have food trucks regularly, and we ordered food to-go from the Brazilian truck outside. Deliciously unique! There's also a few spots nearby you can bring food in from (an ice cream/waffle shop next door and Tacos El Tucan too). We took a ride share, but street parking is available. Looking forward to coming on an event night to catch the local vibes.

I had no difficulty hearing the match over the noise of the crowded venue. Water was supplied next to the bar and was self service. It was constantly kept full. I never saw it empty. My wife and I had just visited Abbey Tavern this past weekend, a premier Scottish pub in the City, and we expected a similar atmosphere. However, the moment we showed up, we were met with great disappointment. The Goose & Fern is honestly a terrible place to watch a sports match: there was only a single TV mounted in the back corner of the restaurant, the TV wasn't particularly large, and the speakers had been turned completely off. What a bust. Although the food was decent, especially the Shepherd's pie -- which came piping hot in a small cast iron skillet, the service was downright dreadful and almost non-existent. We never received waters (or were even asked if we wanted beverages), our table wasn't given enough silverware, we were never checked on during the meal, and we were waiting around for 30 minutes twiddling our thumbs before somebody from our party finally went up to try to pay for the check. In hindsight, a tip was not warranted for the lack of service. Overall, Yelp grossly misled me on The Goose & Fern. This is not a spot I would stop by again to watch a sporting match. If you're in this part of Santa Rosa, do yourself a favor and head over to Dave and Busters down the street where they have a bunch of massive screens, tons of beer options, and service that will far surpass what you're getting here.

From the very beginning, the customer service was lacking. Before finalizing my event, I visited the venue in person to ask questions and get a better understanding of the space. The Hispanic male employee I interacted with was unfriendly, unapproachable, and unable or unwilling to answer even basic questions, repeatedly telling me to contact sales. While I understand that sales handles bookings, I expected someone who works at the venue to be able to provide some level of assistance or information. Unfortunately, his attitude remained the same during the event. Several things that had been requested were not set up as discussed, and the overall atmosphere felt unwelcoming. What upset me most was that some of my guests arrived carrying water bottles, and this employee openly told me, in front of my guests, that he would kick us out if he sees outside drinks again. I found this incredibly embarrassing, unprofessional, and completely inappropriate. The experience became so uncomfortable that many of my guests left early. For what was supposed to be a special occasion, the service and treatment we received fell far below expectations. Considering the amount spent, I expected professionalism, hospitality, and a welcoming environment. Unfortunately, we received the opposite. I would not host another event here, nor would I recommend this venue to others looking for a place to celebrate an important occasion.
