I am so sorry to write this review for such an incredible place but to my great shame I feel I'm obliged. The beloved pub has changed. Seems like it's now a cop bar, or some sort of alt-right hangout.
That's not tongue in cheek. There are a group of older white men who hang outside on the front deck and enforce what they call "the owners rules ". None of them are the owner. But some of them ( at least the one in white shorts, white popped collar polo shirt, tucked with belt, high tight slicked haircut and *boat shoes*- I kid you not I wish it was fiction, I saw this with my own two eyes) brag to be police, no identification provided. Him and his buddies act like they own the place. Quite a few of the older white men with beards wear fedoras (again not a joke, actual fedoras I'm serious) and chime in after the 'leader' speaks. Literally textbook bully/bully entourage stuff. Again, Jesus, I wish this was fiction. It sounds like it is. It isn't. I was there and saw it and it blew my mind.
I was drinking a pint and saw this group of dudes start harassing someone for "smoking weed". The person said, loudly and clearly, that it wasn't weed. They kept badgering them. They bragged they were about to get that person "86'd" for weed. Dude didn't move, didn't appear to care. Then they went inside and got the bar tender. Bar tender came out. Surprise surprise, no weed. The bartenders said cloves. Nobody got tossed. And then, after that, when the tender went back inside they started loudly and rudely harassing that person again. No one stopped them. No one said anything. The guy told them to buzz off and they just sat there smirking. The sheer entitlement of this group was palpable, it was pretty clear these men felt untouchable for whatever reason. White polo shirt/boat shoes dude sat there like a king holding court or something, talking loudly about "use of force" and "putting animals down". Heard it myself, loud and clear. It was like the entire place got turned on its head. I have never, not once, witnessed a bar experience like this. Not even at the old warehouse in Oakland, an actual cop bar. Certainly never at the pub on solano, a welcoming neighborhood pub. The patio cleared immediately. I left. It felt awful. Like a funeral for a beloved bar. Bar is understaffed and can't handle it. Apparently they're there all the time now is what someone told me inside. Lone bar tender looks like they just stay inside and lets these dudes run the front like it's theirs.
I don't know who these dudes are or what happened to this bar but holy smokes, I've never ever seen this before. One star. Stay clear.
If you're the owner of this place I'd step in and sort this out before they ruin this historic establishment. If they are cops the public should absolutely know this place welcomes off duty and drinking cops that pick fights and will harass patrons. If they're your friends, the community should know this is now a private residence for this club of men that now run the place. What a darn shame to see a lovely community pub, a gathering place for decades, get taken over by a bunch of jerks. read more
