We don't recommend eating here at all!!They definitely need to learn how to 1) make a salad. How hard is this? It was soggy and tomatoes were old. The potatoes on the side were tasty though. 2) spaghetti with meat sauce. Another one to avoid. Had some tiny pebbles in it to make it crunchy. 3) soup was horrible. After the trek up and down the castle, we were starving and stopped by the restaurant for a late lunch today (Christmas Day). Even though it was 3pm in the afternoon, the place was packed and we had to wait in line to get a table. I can't imagine the craziness during the summer season. The most delicious thing I've had so far in Germany is the roasted pork knuckle. I had it yesterday and had to have it again today. The pork meat is so flavorful and the skin is cooked to a crisp, mouthwatering crunch. The pork knuckle is pretty big and probably can be shared between two people, but I'm a fata*s and can gobble that whole thing up by myself. The dish comes with sauerkraut and two potato dumplings. The potato dumplings were also delicious and goes well with the sauerkraut. If you've never had pork knuckles, now's the time to try it. I haven't quite seen these back in the States before. read more

Visited this place after quite a hike. Even though it was raining at that time, the restaurant staff still greeted us warmly well. Had pork knuckles for lunch. Out of all that I have had during my travels in Germany, this one hits the spot! The meat is tender and juicy, and I really enjoyed it! The people are nice and attentive, though busy. I would just be ready to pay for water drink if this is your first time visiting at any part of Europe. Stay hydrated though! Really recommend going there and trying their dish. read more

Last real restaurant before the castle. It is certainly not the greatest food in Germany, but compared to the less than stellar options in the area, its good! We wanted a quick bite and drink before the tour. I got the Apple Strudel with vanilla sauce and a Radler. My friends both got the pizza. Apple strudel was awesome! So much different than in the States. The pizza was ok. Probably should have expected that. Service and setting were great, we would stop here again if we do the castle another time! read more

Whether it was the altitude, the long hike to Neuschwanstein Castle, the cool, brisk Autumn air, or the fact that I skipped breakfast that morning, I really enjoyed my wiener schnitzel mit pommes frites here, along with a Hofbrau beer. The location of this restaurant is just below Neuschwanstein Castle, so the scenery and location couldn't be more idyllic. We had a huge party with us, and everyone enjoyed their food. It is the usual German fare, from bratwurst, wiener schnitzel, pork shoulder, etc. The real treat here is to hit the stand at the entrance to the restaurant that makes what our guide called "Snow Balls". They are like beignets with powdered sugar...hot, doughy balls of goodness. A perfect end to the meal as you continue your stroll back down into town. read more

After seeing the castle we were cold & hungry. I got the goulash soup which was good. Our new friends we met that day also enjoyed. They let us bring my pup in & the twin waiters were very nice. I hope to try more of their menu next time, we were in a bit of a rush to catch our bus back. read more

5 stars for the quarkini stand in front of the restaurant, which has amazing quarkini (donut balls slightly chewy on the inside with a light crispy outside)! These were hands-down the best donut balls I've had since my last visit to Leonard's in Honolulu for malasadas. If you are visiting Neuschweinstein castle, do yourself a favor and check to see if they are making the quarkinis fresh and hot out front of this restaurant just a couple hundred yards down the hill. If they are, get a bag of three, you won't regret it! read more

The location is great and the ambience is wonderful. However the hot chocolate here was less than appealing and tasted more like milk than hot chocolate....a bit disappointing. I cannot comment on the food as we did not eat here. There are loads of places down below to eat so in case you are looking there is plenty of choice once you get down from the castle. read more

I had been in Germany for two days and have yet to taste local German food. Luckily when we were walking downhill we came across this beautiful Bavarian restaurant we noticed on the carriage ride up. We were promptly seated and our drink order was taken. They have a very impressive beer offering here. For lunch I started with the goulash and the nurnberger sausage as my entree. Both were excellent and the portions were just right. Niki ordered the spatzel with cheese and onions. She enjoyed this dish very much and I tasted it myself, delicious. For dessert we shared an apple strudel. It was perfect and just the right size for two to enjoy. This is a must for those visiting the castle and I hear that this location also serves as a hotel. Next time we will have to eat and sleep here. read more

This restaurant was in the ideal location for those walking up the steep climb to Neuschwanstein castle. I found myself on this very climb in early December 2012, pushing a baby buggy uphill, in the snow, for about 45 minutes. I rounded the corner as I was getting closer and closer to the castle and more tired and smelled and saw an outdoor grill which was cooking "snow balls", little warm pastries that were perfect to counteract the cold and snow. This is where everyone was stopping on the way up or down. It is a good place to have a couple of drinks also before jumping back into the snow. This provided a great break at what seemed like a never ending climb and also a decent dinner after leaving the castle on the way back down. read more

Terrible tourist trap. Has a wonderful location, close to the castle but the service is spotty and unfriendly and the food is simply terrible. After a wonderful tour of Neuschwanstein Castle a visit to this cafe was exactly what we needed! The goulash soup was on special and it was hands down the best goulash soup anyone in our group had ever had! Seriously it had these huge hunks of melt in you mouth beef and would be worth a second visit just for the soup! The cafe is modern and has a beautiful view of the valley and Hohenschwangau Castle. They also have a great selection of desserts and different types of coffees sure to give you your second wind. read more

Staff were polite and very welcoming. This place was very busy but we did not have to wait long for a table for 9 people. Food was served quickly and was delicious! Meals are a very reasonable price too. This is the perfect place to stop off for lunch before going on a castle tour. read more

Located at the Neuschwanstein castle, this restaurant has some of the most beautiful views of the area. In terms of food, I'm told it is Bavarian but since I'm not an expert I'll have to take the waitresses word for it. My friends and I decided to get the pork shank with bone. And for the price it was worth it. The shank is pretty big and thick and the sauerkraut was fresh and made to order. In terms of taste, it was the tasty and full of flavor. The staff were all friendly and spoke english and were happy to answer any question about the menu items. The restaurant is like a beer hall and is well maintained. What we really liked was that we didn't have to pay for the toilet. You should definitely try this place if your visiting the castle. read more

Perfect location! Menu covered all the necessary bases. Service was polite, quick, spoke English, all correct. I thought the place would be full at 1:30pm (especially given the location), but there were plenty of seats available and service was quick. I thought my bratwurst was good, but the potato salad was mushy and didn't have much flavor. Kids' spaetzle was so-so. One kid did not like her frankfurter (said there were gristle bits). Strawberry kuchen was average. But, location is everything, and eating in the patio on a sunny afternoon after visiting Neuschwanstein before descending the hill was perfect. read more

There's no staff available after about 6pm and there aren't telephones in the room. Basically if you need something after dark, no one is around. When we came back to this hotel after getting dinner in town, two men followed us into the hotel. They were walking down the path from the castle and eyeing us up as we approached the door to go in. We tried to rush in and get the door shut behind us, but there was a man at the door inside blocking our way. The two men walked in right behind us and purposefully watched us go into our room. As two women traveling alone, we were understandably freaked out by this. They knew which room we were in, and like I said, there was no staff on site who we could even alert about this and no phone to be able to call anyone. We decided not to stay at the hotel and left with all our luggage right away. Luckily we were able to check into a hotel in town. As we made our way back to town the same two men were still following us, but luckily we were able to get safely into the new hotel. They clearly weren't staying at the Schlossrestaurant hotel, and had no reason to have followed us in. We saw the same two guys at the castle the next day. I don't know if they were drug dealers, pick-pockets, or stole from the hotel or what. The next day we went back to try to explain what happened, but no one spoke English well enough, and I think they just thought we were crazy or over-reacting. Don't stay here. Stay at the Alpenstuben in town. It's much, much safer and the staff there is very friendly. read more
