Located inside of Hotel Maximilian! This made it a little tricky to find but once we did we were sat right away. Our waitress spoke English and was extremely kind in helping up navigate the menu. The portions were larger than we had expected and definitely filled us up after a full day of adventuring at Neuschwanstein. My kasespatzl came in a rustic pan topped with fried onions. We walked in here for our late afternoon pick-me-ups on a day of long drive and after a late lunch. We walked around this quaint little town for some points of interest after checking in to our hotel. It was away from the center of the town, but it was just a short walk from our hotel. Since we didn't have a reservation, the host allowed us to have a table with an understanding that we'll finish by 18:00 (in about 80 minutes). We thought that'd give us plenty of time to have something refreshing and empty our table, so we agreed to our terms. There were only a few items on a menu in terms of desserts, so we ordered an apple strudel with ice cream (photo). Mmm, that was very good. It took a while before the dish came out, and the strudel was still warm. It had a very good flavor, and whipped cream and ice cream combination was very good. Service was very good. Our server spoke English and took care of us right away. The outdoor dining area was under the trees. With light breeze and shade, it was almost perfect atmosphere in the sunny afternoon. I thought we'd be back for a meal here, but we didn't come back for the rest of our long weekend in Oberammergau. Perhaps, the next time we're close by, we'd come back and try their main meals. Had lunch here on a quiet Tuesday--I had a good Beer & Onion soup, loaded with loops of sweet onion, and a cheese & spaetzle dish. This looked like mac and cheese but had a very deep, rich taste, like Gorgonzola was involved... I could only eat half of this dish! Also had a cold Hofbrau beer. Stopped in for a beer after walking around Oberammergau for the afternoon. The outside patio area is nice and inviting. It's especially nice on a pleasant day. They've got plenty of seating and a great view. I ended up staying for dinner. They have several menu choices and a good variety. I had the schnitzel, which was excellent. This place was awesome! We had passed the day before and I said how cool it looked from the outside. They had an awesome kids play area, so we asked to be seated right near it. It helped tremendously when waiting for our food. We tried their wheat beer to start, which reminded us of an IPA from the states! Really good! All the food was amazing. We had the carpaccio and spargel soup for an appetizer. Then proceeded to have the kids spaghetti, pulled pork sandwich and crispy pork. The kids spaghetti noodles looked homemade and the sauce had a great taste to it. I was very surprised the pulled pork was so tasty. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the crispy pork. On to dessert, we splurged and got two. Strawberry creme brûlée and apple strudel! Strudel was really out of this world. The brûlée has the perfect balance with the rhubarb sorbet. All in all our experience was amazing. I only didn't give 5 stars because we felt our service was slower because we were American. My husband speaks some German and would talk in such. But we noticed the table next to us was German and got all their food before ours each time. We had some long waiting periods in between food and they did not. Finally my husband spoke only German half way through the meal and our service picked up. I just found that somewhat irritating since he had tried in the beginning to speak german and the waiter begrudgingly switched to English ‍ read more

Hello Summer IPA! I like you! We ate here twice in the week we were in town! The service here was great. The food was great. We had the goulash, pork knuckle, pulled pork sandwich, tomato soup, and a beer onion soup. The goulash was fantastic. The pork knuckle was tender and the outside was perfectly crispy. The pulled pork sandwich is very good for being in Germany where it seems like BBQ is few and far between. The sweet potato fries were an excellent touch. The soups were even good. During a lengthy stay in Oberammergau many of the restaurants were explored and this one became a favourite. OK, it obviously aims to capture American visitors and you'll hear more English spoken than German, but if you can get past that you'll have an enjoyable experience. The beer, of course, is fresh and during the Spargel season some the specialities were satisfying, though the portion sizes were a little on the small size. My Risotto of Wild Mushrooms and Asparagus was extremely tasty, but I could easily have eaten double the amount! Friendly service in this cosy restaurant. Recommended. read more

What a wonderful place that unfortunately suffers from ever-declining service and now bad attitudes on top of that. It used to be just one server and bartender, but now it has become the norm. What has happened here? After ignoring me while standing in front of me at the bar, I have a new attitude bartender walk past me 3 more times while times doing nothing, then he goes over to other customers to see for a second time if they need anything (they don't). Finally I asked to be served (just want a beer after traveling and staying here), but get a terrible attitude. This is sad. This place used to be so good. I'm embarrassed for them. Not sure I'll stay here again at the rate they charge. Not worth what was a convenience. Only saving grace is the one young man who got back from Thailand a few mon a ago. He is a great server and so wonderful to talk to. Thank god there is a light at the end of this tunnel, maybe. read more

Good choice for upscale Bavarian fare in Oberammergau, and great house-brewed beer (the kellerbier in particular). This is upscale food, but in a fairly casual environment. The stroganoff was delicious, but less creamy than I am used to, and a slightly smaller portion than I would have preferred. The duck breast was a great choice, nicely cooked so that it was still moist and not too chewy, and with a touch of citrus to offset the richness. We didn't try it, but the table behind us tried the Kaiserschmarrn soufflé and it looked amazing. All in all a good choice for a slightly fancier meal. read more

This is one of my favorite places in Oberammergau. The food is amazing. The beer is all super. The staff is friendly and professional and attentive. Everyone speaks English superbly. The atmosphere is relaxing yet polished. You get a mix of diners, some in shorts or jeans and some in evening wear. The outdoor beer garden is extremely pleasant in the warmer months. I didn't find anything not to like here. I wish I could of stayed here while I was in the area but they were booked full, hardly uncommon. If you want to stay at this hotel book early, especially in the warmer months - April through October. The restaurant gets very busy so you should make a reservation. If you want to try the cellar beer go early, it's popular and they do run out of it on busy evenings. It's centrally located downtown within walking distance of most of Oberammergau. (This review is about the restaurant, not the hotel.) After a long day walking around in the beautiful Linderhof Castle we decided to have a Bavarian dinner today. Well we tried so also yesterday in a different place and were hoping to have a better experience today. And yes, this one was great (lucky me, only through this success I am still allowed to pick restaurants again). Here's the review: Maxbräu is a typical Bavarian private brewery, restaurant, beer garden, and hotel (that's where the word "Gasthaus" originated from, a house to eat and drink and then also stay if you can no longer walk straight...). It's a little on the expensive side (for Bavarian standards - others may call it inexpensive) and very modern. There's also a big beer garden and a patio outside, but it was already too cold and starting to rain. The inside is beautiful with a lot of wood, big windows on the one side, and a cosy and more dim area on the other side and nice corners where you can sit on warm fur. The welcome was very friendly and professional, unfortunately nearly the whole restaurant was booked (on a Wednesday at 5:30 pm!), but we got a nice table for two at the windows. We got our menu from another very friendly waiter, and after a while ordered our food and drinks with another friendly waitress. Throughout the whole evening the service was very attentive (asking if everything was ok, if we wanted more to drink, if we wanted more to eat), a really nice experience. Note this is a place to enjoy food, so make sure you have enough time (we spent two hours without drinking because we had to drive - but we saw others who were already there warming up for their dinner when we arrived, eating while we did, and then were still enjoying the home brewed beer when we left). Talking about food - I know good Bavarian food by heart, so I am always happy when I get it on my holidays. And this place had what I was looking for (see also my photos): - Leberknödel-Suppe, home made and in the broth came good carrots, celeriac and celery (yes, that's actually two different vegetables) and leek. Very tasty! - Trout, a big one, perfectly cooked, and as a side we got smoked potatoes (I never had that before, they were smoked like smoked fish, and the taste was unique and an absolute perfect match for the trout) and cucumber. On top there was a big slice of lemon in a small sachet, so that you could squeeze the lemon without squeezing the juice over your shirt, a great idea! - Schweinebraten, made from a very good piece of meat and cooked perfectly, in a delicious beer sauce (from their own beer, of course) and accompanied by two dumplings (filled with little bread pieces, which I like a lot). And not to forget the red cabbage, which was again cooked and seasoned perfectly. Don't say you know very good cooked red cabbage if you haven't tried this one... Oh and also not to forget two pieces of delicious crust, thick and crispy on the one and soft on the other side, that's how it should be. Having finished our meal I had to admit that there was no more room in my stomach to try one of their delicious and innovative desserts. This five-star review covers both the beer, the food, and the venue. Let's talk about the most important item first...the beer. Ammergauer Maxbrau brews their own beer. They have a regular lager and do seasonal brews. As of November 2015, they are brewing an espresso dark beer (dunkel, for those who habla a little German). While it only hovers around 4.5% alcohol, the beer tastes like liquid velvet and is probably one of the my favorite dark beers I've had in my 1 1/2 years in Germany. The best part about the Maxbrau...you can by the beer by the liter and take it home. It's a reasonable 7.50 Euro per liter and is worth every Euro cent. The food. The menu is a little limited, but don't let that dissuade you. I've always found the places with limited choices usually excel at every part of their menu. while I only had two items on their menu, the peppered pork knuckle and the crispy pork dish, were both above reproach. The portions were just right and the presentation was excellent. Above all, the value of Maxbrau's food is excellent as well. If you want to stay in the inexpensive realm, they have choices for you; if you want to splurge, they'll have items to meet your needs. The venue. The inside of the restaurant is well done. It has the feel of an upscale restaurant and looks like a trendy brew-pub. There isn't much bar space, so if hanging out at the bar if your thing, the Maxbrau falls short in this realm. However, there are a number of regular and tall tables around the bar, if you are looking to bask in the glow of the brew-pub atmosphere. Like many German restaurants, they do get overwhelmed if there is a large crowd, but this is more of a cultural thing vice a Maxbrau fault. Suffice it to say, the Maxbrau is on my list of must go places every time I am in Oberammergau. You'd do well to follow my example...:-) read more

In a very touristy town, sometimes it can be difficult to find a good, reasonable place to eat. We stopped in here, without reservations at around 6:00 on Monday, and were met with a very indifferent attitude, to say the least. It seemed they were doing us a favor to seat us near the bar. The service from everyone, except our pouty server, was fine. The food was good too, but not exceptional. Prices were about whatyou'd expect from a hotel's restaurant. There are better options out there, but IF you make a reservation you shouldn't be disappointed here. read more

Had the unfiltered and their seasonal dark beer: among the best beers I had in my life. I had the farmer sausages plate with sauerkraut and beer bread - all were delicious albeit on the heavier side, as one would expect Bavarian cuisine to be. A lovely warm decor and friendly service on top of the incredibly tasty beer and flavourful food should make this establishment a must-dine while in beautiful Oberammergau. "So good" is what my wife said when I told her I was writing this review. And I agree with her which explains why I am doing this. We were n Oberammergau after a visit to the Ettal Monastery. Monk beer is good, but that is a different story. BTW Maxbrau beer is good as well. We stopped by this establishment based on its great reviews, but stayed because it also brewed its own beers. We come from a microbrew community and I was so happy to find a place in Bavaria that makes its own beer. Stay with me I'll get to the food, but I have to give my two cents to the beer right now. Their IPA has the pine and citrus aromas you'd expect, but it is not over-hopped like a lot of American varieties making it very enjoyable. My wife had their Cellar beer, an unfiltered wheat that was also delicious. Now to the food. We loved everything we ordered. The mushroom soup with ravioli was amazing. We loved it because of the amazing flavor combinations. Days later my wife is still raving about it. We also loved the crispy pork which was so big the serving filled us both up. Regardless we still made an attempt at the meat and cheese board, but we had no room. From my POV, The best part of the board was the locally produced cheese, all of which were delicious. Bonus points for the decor, speaking English, and accepting credit cards. We have recommended this place to everyone traveling with us. Great little spot! We went there with our two kiddos who loved the kid's hut. Husband and I were able to enjoy a brew and have a real conversation while the kids were completely occupied with toys and games! The kids area is tucked away in the back so even if you're not there with kids, this is a nice, relaxing spot to have dinner. It is quiet and has a nice atmosphere.
