Darryl in Women's coats is amazing! Excellent service and VERY knowledgeable. He gets an A+! We were about to buy the coat he recommended and my mom and I wanted to discuss the $300 coat. My mom needed to sit and there are no seats. So she sat on a sturdy small, low to the ground table (as short as a chair). Manager came but and asked her to get up. It was so unnecessary. It's a sturdy table. Put such a bad taste in my mouth, I didn't buy it. Pick your battles! We aren't children. She needed to sit. Offering to get a chair is fine, but it would've taken you 15 mins and we were sitting for 2 mins. read more

My husband purchased a rifle there for deer hunting last Fall. It was pricey but had good reviews. He ended up not hunting due to health issues and the rifle was NEVER fired not even for practice. Tonight we returned it with the scope and they only refunded less than 15% of what the rifle is worth. And they gave us a hand written check from the store after 5:30pm. The staff was rude and condescending! We will never come back to this store again!! read more

Lets just say someone spent a lot of money into making this store awesome! It's obvious when first pulling up to Sheels that's its going to be nice. Big bronze statues of adventurist dawn the store front, along with smaller statues of presidents lounging about causally reading the Declaration of Independence and such. An amazing salt water fish tank catches the eye when you first walk in... Then my gaze was dragged away by a huge Ferris wheel in the middle of the building! Walking up the stairs you find the stores obsession with former presidents, (especially Lincoln). The mechanical former presidents recite there eerie monologs. There is a huge mountain with a bunch of stuffed wild animals all over it, honey badgers, bald eagles, yogi the bear, etc. This place could be the new set for a Night at the Muesum movie.... Sporting goods style. It really caters to the area it's in. If REI and Dicks sporting goods had a love child this is it. It has a mixture of outdoor activities such as kayaking and fishing. One of the biggest departments is hunting.... Yes they have crossbows for your zombie apocalypse needs! There are your general sports stuff; including wrestling, football, etc. Then there are sports team items, area specific of course ;-) cardinals, packers and such. There is a restaurant/food place in the building but I can't remember anything else about it other than they have the best fudge ever... I'm sure they had other stuff... I can only remember fudge and gelato. My only disappointment was the lack of rock climbing gear. It was a sad and dismal little section. read more

Best outdoors store in Springfield & arguable the entire state! Most always my first stop for fishing gear, firearms, ammo, etc. Staff is always very friendly/helpful. As a retired law-enforcement officer with a valid CCW permit, I attempted to purchase ammunition at this store. I am aware of the exemption laws for the FOID card and showed them my CCW permit with photo ID from my home state. It seems two levels of supervision at Scheels were confused and would not sell the ammo. The highest level of supervision was scrambling for a reason they could not sell me the ammo and finally said that I needed a Illinois hunting license? (LOL). She admitted that she had not read the law thoroughly. I was embarrassed for them that they did not know the law. Crazy thing is that they allowed another customer with a FOID card to purchase the ammo for me. Seems the law is working very well... read more

Aaron S. pretty much summed up what Scheels has to offer in his review. And he's very accurate. There's also a Nascar simulator (not that important), but keep in mind that to "play" these simulators, you have to pay. I believe most are around $1, but the Nascar experience will run you $5 for 7-8 minutes of driving. But I digress... The staff is over-the-top helpful! And I mean this in a great way. While I stood in the North Face & sports apparel section weighing my options, I must have been approached by at least 6 employees. And I'm not even kidding. They all offered to assist me and I politely said I was fine. Well, of course later, I needed help. And it wasn't but a 10 step walk to find the nearest eager employee. Seriously, these guys are great! And knowledgable too. There are specialists in each section (fishing, hunting, golfing) and they know their stuff. I applaud Scheels for their approach in hiring their staff. It paid off! Prices seemed on par with stores like Dick's & Gander Mountain. I have a preference to Scheels because I'm a runner. And finding certain running attire/accessories can be difficult. Scheels has a great selection. I was able to find a great high visibility running jacket ($90 jacket on sale for $60). Score!! If you want to check out something different and have 60-90 minutes to burn (it'll be gone before you know it), check out Scheels. It's a fun experience even if you're just window shopping. This is by far the biggest, most over the top sporting goods store I've ever seen! It puts Sports Authority, Dicks, and Modells to shame. They have everything you can imagine for every sport. They can be a bit on the pricey side, but they do have lots of items on sale if you have the time to check often. As an out-of-towner, I just have to take what I can get. If you are looking for something specific, you'll definitely find it here. They also have lots of fun games and stuff for the kids, and a nice cafe. read more

OKAY I LOVE THIS PLACE! This is a full service sporting store that has everything from hunting to running gear and so on. It is like Dick's sports on steroids. The gun section is nice. The store has a Ferris wheel smack dab in the middle, Nascar simulators, shooting gallery, golf simulator, archery range, and more. Holy Moly! The store is a family owned chain and has Midwestern values. You won't find them in a big city and they seem to do just fine that way. If you are going to Springfield, do yourself a favor and stop here. read more

This store is Huge! There's even a fariswheel inside. There is a large selection of sports apparel and equipment. You will pay extra to get everything under one roof so be prepared for that. This store is cool, it's insanely expensive however. I once ran in a treadmill marathon in there which was cool, except my team which consisted of about 8 people lost to a single guy by over an hour. I also forgot my iPod armband there, but no big deal, I'll just sell my first born to buy a new one from them. For the most part the people are pretty knowledgable that work there, and I say most part because the guy who sold me my golf clubs, also happen to sell me my skis about 6months later and after dropping a couple paychecks there, he proceeded to tell me he's only been skiing once in his life. Awesome. However the reason they only get 4 stars is because there is a section in the store for country/cabin/grizzly bear household items. I understand all the hunting stuff, cause who doesn't like to shoot things? But the housewares department? Come on man! read more

I love sporting good and outdoor supply stores and this is an awesome one to visit. It's conveniently located off the interstate and has a huge parking lot. The only complaint I have about its location is getting in and out of there isn't the easiest because the traffic is routed oddly. Pay attention to the signs and road marks and you won't have a problem. The store is two floors with a huge selection of items: camping gear, guns and ammo, fishing gear, clothing, archery supplies, and much more. If you can't find it elsewhere, it's probably here. However, because there is so much, you might feel overwhelmed. Associates are plentiful and ready to help. We have always been able to get assistance quickly and they were knowledgable without hovering over you. There are loads of fun activities in here, from a shooting games, bowling games to the huge ferris wheel in the middle of the store. Overall, this is a great place to spend time wandering around, or shopping for the things you need (or in some cases finding stuff you don't need). Why not 5 stars then? Getting in and out of the parking lot could be improved. Since they have such a huge range of items, certain things you would expect to find (or brands) are left out. read more

Wow what a cool store this is. They sell all kinds of sporting goods equipment and clothing for every sport you can think of. They have little display areas set up throughout the store and different places to get your picture taken. They also have a full sized ferris wheel inside the store. Jake, the manager of the shoe department, provided false information today 12/30/2019, at the Springfield location. I purchased a pair of ASICS running shoes and Jake inquired if I was aware of the credit card offer. I informed him I was not. Jake hands me a business card and advised the store was offering $50 off TODAY's purchase if I completed a credit card application at the customer service desk, near the Ferris wheel. Perfect!!! I did just that and the customer service representative stated I could not use the $50 off coupon on today's purchase, but I could return another time and use it. I love 2hrs away and this would be pointless of me. I explained this to the rep and requested to cancel the application. She smiled and said "Too late." I will NEVER SPEND MONEY AT SCHEEL's again and will pass this story on to everyone that I work with, friends, family members and others from the community that I live in. Thanks Jake, for lying to me and who knows how many other customers today. I'm sure Scheels encouraged this type of fraudulent activity as well. Scheels! Scheels scheels scheels. First of all, I love going there because of their huge selection of products in all of the categories that I love. Secondly, they have the best customer service out of any other store that I've been to. I needed to return some shoes the other day because they wore our way before they should have. The pads on the bottom started peeling off and made a loud squeaking noise when I walked. I thought for sure that I was just out of luck because usually if a store can tell that you've worn shoes at all, they wont let you bring them back. I was worried that since I had just bought new shoes it was going to be money wasted and I would have to find a way to come up with more money for shoes. I called and everyone was so helpful and said just bring them back and we will get you some new ones. I was still skeptical and figured that they would change the story once I got there, but no, they were just as helpful once I got there, and took time to make sure that I was taken care of. Scheels has a good variety and contributes well to the tourist industry that Springfield is trying to get going. They have just about anything you could probably think of when it comes to sporing goods. They have all sorts of clothing (running, cycling, hunting, casual etc). You can also find bikes, guns, camping and hunting gear, knives, team apparel etc. I could go on for a while and still not get everything. Unfortunately, this means some of the departments are lacking (if you are a paintball person, for example) but most of the sections match or surpass other local stores. Even if you don't want to buy anything, it's still good to walk around. They have displays of several presidents (especially ones that are linked to the outdoors). The Lincoln and Jefferson displays are even animatronic. Wildlife scenes also join the presidential displays. The store also has some games (a golf simulator, pitching simulator, shooting gallery and big game hunting arcade game) as well as a ferris wheel and a really cool saltwater fish tank. Additionally there is a restaurant in the store with hot food and sandwiches, ice cream, gelato, fudge, nuts and other goodies. The selection is good (although limited in some departments), the variety is almost baffling and the staff is extremely eager to help. Oh, and the fudge is excellent. read more

Just left the bicycle shop at the Springfield, IL Scheels....it was a complete hustle on par with the sleaziest, skeeziest used car lot. I watched them in action on others besides me. Came in for a simple inner tube repair and was attempted to be hustled into all sorts of other services. It felt like I wouldn't get my bike back until until I spent more than I intended. While walking around if another Stepford employee with a walkie-talkie greeted me with one more robotic hello I think I would have screamed and decked them. This place is over the top. From the fish tanks at the entrance to displays with animals and famous people and the Ferris wheel inside... There is a lot going on here. Pretty much every sport is represented - golf, bowling, shooting, running - you name it. There's a place where you can practice golf and a little mini bowling alley. They also have a pretty sizable section for pets which I really liked and a toy section, too. Prices seem comparable to what we pay for stuff in the Chicago area so it's not exactly a great deal but there is a lot to choose from so it is really convenient. This was kind of an event instead of shopping! We took my nephews as something to do on Friday night and had a great time. We watched the diver clean the giant tank, looking at all the nemo's and dori's. Watched the Farris Wheel go round and round. Inspected all of the animals setup on a mountain scape. Took pictures with the giant fish and bear. The kids played in the jungle gym. We didn't play the mini bowling but it looked fun. We also didn't do the nascar car games because one of the kids was too short to do it. Had a good time playing around, seemed to be pretty expensive for most of the stuff but a nice store. This place is very cool. Think of Dicks Sporting Goods and Cabelas combined into one mega store. There is a cool aquarium at the front of the store and I believe they do a feeding every day. The Ferris wheel is next - it's pretty cool although there are longer waits than there should be. A review on here stated that if u can't find it here, there's something wrong with you. That us correct. There is every sporting good you can think of, outdoor equipment, fishing and hunting supplies and multiple simulators for every sport you can think of. There are several sales items too as well as a play area for kids. This place takes hours to go through-very cool. read more

I was there to visit a cousin but while I was there I visited Scheels. Scheels is one of my favorite sports store but the employees aren't the best at their job. I was looking at guns and an employee comes along and as me for a Foid card. I replied with 'No' and ask me to put the gun back. This is why I give Scheels one star because this employee asked me to put a gun back when it's not even loaded and the trigger is blocked off with a protective case on it. Iv'e researched online and only found that you have to have a Foid card to buy a gun not to hold it. I think that Scheels should either train their employees better or they should fire and hire! read more

Prices are a little higher than most. Not the best location (even though a store this big had nowhere else to go). This place may be worth a visit if you are bored and want to go to a small amusement park. However, if you are looking for average sports gear, apparel, or shoes, this may not be the place for you. Always a staff member available to help if needed. Good selection of gun accessories. The archery department is knowledgeable and willing to help anyone from seasoned archers to novices. I purchased a bow there along with all the goodies and I couldn't be happier, I was hitting quarters from about 18 yards when all was said and done. Would highly recommend this to all outdoor type people, great destination for a family as this place has something for everyone. Let me start by saying I had the worst firearm purchasing experience at this store. I was looking at a glock pistol that was on clearance for a good price. I live in Peoria but I happen to be in Springfield for the day with my wife shopping. This was our second trip at Scheels soon to be our last. The salesman in the firearms that helped me was a good guy with gun knowledge I will admit that, but that's were the good experience ends. I decided for the good price on the firearm I could stand to drive back down in three days (handgun waiting foid wait time) to get the gun. The sales man said sign up for a scheels card and you could save another $15 on the gun, so I did. That could help pay for gas to come back to get the gun. The salesman asked were we were from I said Peoria, no response other than "ok". Filling out the paper work took about double the time than say an actual gun shop. These big sporting goods stores always have more checking. Also the employees that do the actual paper work and register looked in there lower 20's and had zero knowledge of firearms. The manager came over to check the foid paperwork. The Young man says I didn't know Peoria is in Peoria county and smiled. We left about an hour and a half later. I return the following Saturday to get the firearm and instantly I had a feeling that something was off. After about 30 minutes the manager comes out and says "I'm sorry but I cant sell this gun to you" I asked why, he says there store policy in Illinois is they cant sell handguns to Peoria or Chicago residents. I asked at what point should someone have realized this? The first young manager didn't see this, the salesman didn't know of this, either did any of the multiple people at the gun counter. We went back and forth about this issue. By the way there is no sign of any of this. The manger offered to pay for the transfer cost of the gun to a local dealer. So I called multiple shops and neither wanted anything to do with Scheels. Imagine that, The end result was they paid for my gas to drive down and a credit card to a store I will never go in again. I also wrote this on there customer service website and have not got any response. read more
