A nice simple overlook for a view of the mountains to the north…read moreThis was just a pulloff that we decided to stop at on our travel along I-26. I could not find a name for it. It is NOT a welcome center or rest area. It is on the northbound(east) side roughly near mile marker 10-11 and it has a parking lot that fits about 20 vehicles. It was well paved and the parking spots were well marked. The only thing that I saw on the visit was a small wooden platform at the eastern side of the pulloff. The wooden/railed platform deck extends out over the dropoff and has a bench on each side. The platform seemed well-kept and clean. The design allows for panoramic views southward over the Mount Mitchell, and the Blue Ridge Parkway ridge in the distance. There are no restrooms at this stop. It was just the platform with a good view. A little research shows that this is one of the scenic overlooks along the highway that are maintained by the North Carolina Department of Transportation as part of the scenic byway. It was a nice stop for the view but If you're looking for restrooms, keep driving.

This "scenic outlook" along US-23 north of Asheville has no features other than a covered picnic…read morearea and a few rubbish bins. It is a simple loop off the road with marked parking spaces. Easy enough to stop the car and take a walk to the two lovely viewing areas, one looking south and one looking north. On a clear day like today, I could see for miles. It was a nice break. Nestled along side the Doe River just inside the entrance…read moreto Roan Mountain State Park, this campground offers a variety of sites whether you want park along the river front or settle in on the side of the mountain. The staff at Sugar Hollow are friendly and accommodating and are continuing to expand their facilities. While we were there, the laundry area was completed and six new "long term" sites were cleared by inspectors. It is a remote area of Tennessee, but has all of the necessities within a ten minute drive. Do yourself a favor and check out the wood fired pizza at Smokey Mountain Bakers nearby. The six cheese is our favorite. And if that doesn't satisfy you, larger metro areas are with a 30 minute drive.

They provide all of the amenities of home for their guests. We enjoyed a fire in the fire pit next to our cabin and rocking on the front porch in the evenings. The sound of the water moving down the river and the seclusion of the location is peaceful and good for the soul. Due to the convenient location we were able to enjoy sight seeing in North Carolina and Tennessee and take in the breathtaking views from the mountains when hiking. For anyone who loves the outdoors as we do this is the perfect location to spend a vacation. The small town of Erwin is a favorite of ours for its charm and unique shops. We look forward to spending more time at the farm!

When I arrived a few days later they took me in as if I were family. I had injuries from the trail and without hesitation got me the medical treatment I needed. They put me up in the cabin where again they made me feel at home...so much so I did not want to leave spending 5 days with them. I met many other wonderful guests who shared the cabin and stayed in their guest rooms in the house overlooking the scenic view of the river. They had a giant butterfly and giant owl on display but when I asked about the owl, it was not really related to the area or any activities that staff could communicate. They basically just said that it looks nice and the lady who made the large butterfly made that also, so they put it up. I thought that was a little strange as North Carolina has barred owls but not the specific species that the giant decoration is. It does make for a nice piece to look at though. They did have printed information for the activity that I was specifically looking for and everything was well organized. This location is definitely worth a stop.

Hiked into Hemlock Hollow this afternoon with my daughter. It was a spur of the moment decision and…read morewe are so happy we did. The proprietors are genuine, inviting folks offering refreshments, pizza, and other odds and ends. The store is quaint but great for those travelling the Appalachian Trail or exploring the backroads. There is a wonderful, large covered porch looking right over the crystal clear creek where one can eat, drink, and rest. They invited us to walk the grounds and take a look at the cabins. Each was only a few feet from the creek with a nice porch and amenities like grills, fire pits, and a common bathhouse. The cabins were clean, fresh, and inviting. They also offer hiker shuttle services between Hot Springs and Erwin. We ate our pizza and enjoyed great conversation with the owners and a neighbor. We will be sure to stop at Hemlock Hollow regularly!

This is by far the nicest park! The park is located on the Nolichucky River with beautiful long and wide sites. The owners and staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Bathrooms and laundry are cleaned several times a day. Firewood and ice are delivered directly to your site upon request. While here we had an Uncle pass away. My sister in law from Pennsylvania was able to rent one of the themed campers instead of staying at a hotel. She enjoyed her stay and we are planning a family get together here in the future. We don't have small children with us at this time but the playground is inviting. The attention to detail at this KOA is awesome!

We were following the KOA cancellation policy requiring 48 hours which would result in a $10.00 cancellation fee. The manager was not very nice and told us he would only refund us 4 days of our remains 8 days. I am sure he has rented the site for all 8 days by now because again it is a delightful spot Lesson learned Be aware that not all KOA campgrounds are going to adhere to the KOA cancellation policy before booking

One of two cabins we stayed at for our ski trip was rented through Mrs. Margarita Elordi, who owns…read morea 4-bed, 3-bath cabin at the base of the mountain where Wolf Ridge Ski Resort is located. The cabin is located just off Puncheon Fork Rd. in the Wolf Creek community. The drive from the cabin to the ski resort is about 10 to 15 minutes. Once you leave Puncheon Fork for the cabin, the roads are not paved. Instead, they are gravel all the way. While the cabin is not located too far from the road, if there is snow or ice on the ground, a four-wheel drive vehicle is highly recommended. Almost necessary, I would say. The cabin was very nice. It was a log cabin that looked fairly new. The cabin slept 12 people and, for the most part, was spacious. The kitchens and bathrooms were impressive from the sinks to the countertops to the appliances. Very modern. Most rooms slept two, although there was one room with three sets of bunk beds (to sleep six, military barracks style). The master bedroom bath had a small Jacuzzi. The master bedroom also had a TV and DVD player and there was another small one downstairs. The main living room/kitchen area was great for our large group. We had difficulty getting the fire in the fireplace to stick. It was a traditional fireplace as opposed to the convenient gas fireplace we had in our other cabin at Scenic Wolf Resort. I liked the open kitchen with island counter and picnic table/bench-style seating for community meals. The stairs to the top led to a game room with pool table and poker table. There wasn't a whole lot of room to operate upstairs in the "game room" (e.g. the short spaces made many pool shots awkward). However, it sufficed. I did like how we could look down into the living room and kitchen from the game room. The place as a whole was decorated quite nicely and definitely got us in mountain vacation mode. Wi-Fi speed was excellent and there was cell phone service (the same cannot be said at the top of the mountain). Cabin price was reasonable. Overall, I thought this cabin was an excellent choice for our large group of skiers.

It was a…read moregood price and the off season, so there not many people in the resort, but we had a blast! it was serene and secluded. Fabulous views and a bit of a stomach turner of a drive to get there....It would be difficult to drive there during a storm, i surmise. Our house, the Eagles Nest had many of the amenities we needed for a vacation home. The house did need a cleaning, It seems that it does not get too much house keeping because there were ant all over the main floor/dining area. BUt we were able to make do and ignore it for the few days we were there. It was a beautiful house otherwise, with very good 3 story accommodations for an extended family to share. We enjoyed our stay in May, great weather and nice people at the resort!
