My father-in-law gifted me a 1950s Rolex Oyster Perpetual as an engagement gift. It's an antique watch and needed a good servicing, and I brought the watch to Scarsdale Clocks, and it has honestly been one of the worst service experiences of my life. There's too much to write about every interaction, but to highlight: 1. The owner, Walter, is extremely rude, condescending, mean spirited, and unprofessional. He turned every conversation into an argument, and he made vindictive comments, like "now you can tell all your friends you ripped off your local watchmaker" to start off a conversation about price - never a productive starting point. 2. They constantly broke their own standards and promises, which made for a very frustrating experience. Told me they'd call in two weeks, never did, then got angry when I would check in after 3-4 weeks. This happened multiple times. They replaced parts when they told me they would consult me before replacing any part. 3. They told me it would take 2 weeks to service, but they had my Rolex for 6 months, and I had to return it once because they created a new problem after the first servicing. 4. They refused to show me any proof of replaced parts, while claiming they were all Rolex parts. I originally did not plan to write this review, but Walter added one last rude comment as I was leaving, so I wrote this review to spare others of my extremely frustrating and demeaning experience. Excellent. I spoke to Walter on the phone this morning and found him to be helpful and knowledgeable. I drove up from Manhattan with my Seth Thomas 400 day anniversary clock which was not working. One hour later, Walter had it keeping perfect time. Walter is professional, courteous, patient, extremely knowledgeable and reasonable. Walter Kerschbaum is a consummate professional as he goes about his clock repair business with the detailed knowledge which comes from decades of careful work. He has repaired my antique wall clock and taken care of whatever ailed it. It now runs perfectly and accurately, with the familiar even tick/tock melody returned to our home. While he admits that he is spending most of his time working on watches, there was a special gleam in his eyes when I brought him our clock. He told me a little of its provenance (I had no idea that the name on the clock represented a 19th century establishment with branches in London, Paris and Buenos Aires, even tho I had purchased it in Athens). I would trust him without reservation to do repairs on whatever time pieces a customer might bring to his shop. This story is really what you would hope for from a small town, mom-and-pop type business. I have gone in for a very simple things like battery replacement or changing a watch trip, and very complex things like restoring a broken antique clock. Every time that I go in I'm treated with courtesy and professionalism, but with a very warm and personable touch. Walter does great work at reasonable prices. My family came from France and we brought our family clocks with us. Over the past three years, Scarsdale Clocks has restored each of them to great working condition. One is a grandfather type clock, and the others are wall clocks and mantle clocks, and a carriage clock. All six clocks were restored and run very nicely in our home. What a local gem! We were very excited to have a real watch and clock repair store and not just a generic jewelry store that out sourced repairs, in town. My husband and I went in to have several watches repaired. Walter and his staff were incredibly friendly, knowledgable. And the plus was that while the last piece of repair, replacement of bands, was being done, we taked about his beautiful assortment of vintage clocks and learned quite a bit about their historys. If you need something small done like changing a battery on a Quartz watch this is your place if it's more detailed work on a automatic watch this is not the place to go. Took my submariner here to get the timing adjusted - watch had same problem with in a week of his repair. Also had him fix the an issue with the crown, he gave the watch back to me with a crown that was to big for the watch. I pointed it out to him( still amazed how he didn't notice) then he put one on that was to small. At this point I started to realize what I was dealing with and gave up. Took the watch up the block to a jewelry store and it was fixed with in a hour. Walter had the watch for 3 weeks. This is really a battery replacement store. read more

The nicest guy. Brought in an old clock bought on eBay which didn't work. Walter was very upfront that the clock wasnt worth the cost of the repair. He suggested a much cheaper alternative using a quartz movement. This takes away antique value but makes it functional. And quiet too. This way I got the look, the quiet and a working clock down to the pendulum. Only took a week to do as well. We also talked about all the clocks in the shop. Excellent. I had noticed this shop on my walk to/from the train station. I received a Cartier watch as a gift and the battery had died. Having this replaced by Cartier would have cost hundreds of dollars and forced unnecessary services that I did not want. Walter replaced my battery in 15 minutes for $15. He also buffed out the scratches on the face of the watch. He was truly a pleasure to do business with. Highly recommend. read more

When my 1902 regulator clock stopped working, Walter got it to work and guaranteed his work. He's incredibly knowledgeable and I really enjoyed learning all my clock (and the other clocks in his store). He's the real deal when it comes to "old school" knowledge and professionalism. I have a small collection of Omega automatic watches from the '50's. I noticed on a Constellation that the hour hand was not true on the hour. I took a chance because this place was local and I am very sorry that I did. First I was told that it was a simple repair that would take a couple days. I was told it was going to be $75. I was given a ticket and told they would call. They never did...I finally went in about a week later and was told it needed more work and it would cost $175. I should have taken it then, but said ok. I waited for the call and it also never came again and about two weeks later I went in again an asked about it. The woman there went into a basket and pulled it out. I looked at it, it seemed ok, I paid, thanked her and left. I don't wear the watch all the time but was wearing it about 10 days or so later I noticed again that the hour hand was not true. I went back in and confronted them about it and I was mad. I felt that I went in there with a problem, they claimed it needed more, charged me more and ended up basically doing nothing - not my idea of a reputable place. Of course the owner offered to fix it overnight and bring it to my home, but I didn't want their hands on it again, ever. I think if he was a class act he would have offered a refund, but that wasn't happening, he's no class act. I think you have 1 chance to prove your ability, and their poor communication and certainly poor service work, is an indication to me that they are not a place I can trust. If you have an antique clock that needs attention, this is the place to take it. We have two - one which belonged to my father, the other, my father-in-law. Both French "4-glass table regulators," late 19th c. ? The latter had frustrated my father-in-law. I never saw it running while he was alive. Mr. Kerschbaum has it running perfectly. And when the mainspring on the other broke, he replaced it. Both of these treasured antiques run perfectly now, chime every half-hour, get wound every Saturday, and give me great pleasure.
