A lot of that fear left as soon as I walked into Urban Bloom. Bright, plant filled, and sleek with photo opportunities at every turn Urban Bloom is just a beautiful place to be. I waited a couple of minutes for Olivia and she walked me over to her station where she took the time to listen to my hair concerns and worries. She was so kind to take the time to acknowledge my concerns and provide me with helpful advice. One big thing she emphasized was the importance of washing my hair weekly. This was completely new to me as I have been told the opposite all my life. For the products to do their job they need moisture, and without water and nutrient it can't do anything! It makes sense why I have had no curl definition...the products are just sitting on top of my hair. So I know now moving forward that I need to wash once a week if not more, as well as use a mask and a conditioner that will strip my hair as well at least once a month. My entire appointment and treatment were wonderful. I left with my curls hydrated and defined! I cannot wait to incorporate these new changes into my routine and really see my curls come back to life! I would say that this salon specializes in the longer 3 hair types versus my shorter four 4b/c, but I am glad that they were able to work with my hair and give me a great style and advice. But I told myself let's just get this done. All I wanted was a trim and my hair to be dyed a natural black. Because I'm beginning to go gray. So I felt like this should be an easy thing to do. I don't normally go to salons, I don't normally dye my hair. Two young girls (I wish I remembered their names) start just brushing black hair dye all over the place. It was getting over my forehead, cheek, ears neck. They put nothing on before hand to make sure it didn't stain my face. When I finally get my hair wash I agree to a condition treatment. I felt like I got nothing done, I just sat there for 5 minutes. Then she blew dried my hair, not using a brush. Then used a tiny flat iron to straighten my hair. That's when I see these girls dyed my side burns black! Each side burn, why would you do that? It's like I got a line up. I'm so embarrassed. I paid over 2 hundred dollars to be completely embarrassed I look like I have side burns. I regret going here, I wish I could take it all back. I also still have grays.

So, I didn't have an appointment and I just called out of the blue as a new customer. I was lucky to get an appointment tonight and I was excited! When I arrived, the small space, with three chairs, were jammed packed. There was a woman sitting on the bench the entire time, a bench that could fit two people, but sat right in the middle. This person turned out to not even be a client but a friend. Like a roadie for a hairdresser? Kinda wacky given the lack of space, IMO. Meanwhile, clients had to sit in the hallway and the lobby while bleach and color sat on their heads. I too spent some time in the lobby. The place was REALLY busy, which could explain why there was hair all over the place. I hesitated to put my bag down because it was just kinda hairy everywhere and my bag picks up hair like a Roomba. I did find a spot but had to bring it with as I moved around so it didn't really matter that I had found it. The service was rushed but I don't mind moving around creation if it'll save me a hour or two in the chair. Most of the work was done by an awesome new assistant in the beginning. Jessica was very much involved though throughout the process. When Jessica brought me to the bowl to rinse, she sounded excited that the color looked better than when I walked in. And yes, it is better, but the root lines are still super visible given the really sharp starting point of the previously bleached strands. I paid her and tipped her but I'm slightly underwhelmed now that I'm in natural light. (The lighting in there is wayyyyyyyyyy different I think.) Unfortunately, I fly out of here tomorrow and won't have time to give her the opportunity to make it better for me. Then again, it isn't awful just kinda meh right now for a $70 (w/$10 Yelp coupon) treatment. Anyhoo, that's my piece and Jessica was really kind so and fast so I'd recommend her if you're looking for someone in the area!

My hair is a bit difficult and time consuming to work with: it's thick in both the hair strands and the amount I have. My hair also absorbs chemicals more slowly, so any process done to it takes way longer than expected as well. I'm glad that MJ is willing to work with me and my hair type. It's recommended to make an appointment with MJ ahead of time. If you're looking for a specific style, I also suggest you message her first with pictures of what you would like, so she can prepare and work with you. I appreciate that she's honest with me about what will work and what she may have to change to help suit my face and needs. MJ's studio is small, clean, and cozy. She'll do her best to try to make sure you're comfortable during the appointment. She'll also give suggestions on how to take care of and style your hair if you got any chemical treatments done.
