I have been using this company off and on for years. They have implemented a poor practice which is why I won't be giving my business any longer. You pay to ship items and scan; fair. NOW they FORCE you to buy their subscription service just for you to download the media onto YOUR device! I get one must pay extra for their cloud service but I DO NOT need it. Why? Because I ALREADY HAVE A CLOUD! I don't care if they charge 5 or 500 bucks.... It is BS. I will stop recommending to my friends. Bye. read more

ScanCafe digitization of slides, videos:. They received 11/25. By 12/16 they had finished digitizing (scanning). Supposed to be transferring to thumb drive. As of the 26th, still not done. On 12/31, the pics were available on line. Fairly good work {negatives were scanned from wrong side requiring a horizontal flip on all of them), but 36 days? Sheesh! Received physical media and thumb drive on 1/10/26. Total time from time they received slides until I received them back: 46 days!! read more

I've used ScanCafe quite a bit over the years, and their service is quite good, but recently they've been sneaking extra charges into each order that they don't advertise up front. So, in the end, you'll always have an extra $15+ charge that comes out of the blue. When I complained, they said there is nothing they can do about it, so I'm now using a different company for scanning. read more

Total scam. ScanCafe should not be allowed to operate in the United States. If you want to download the photos that you paid to have scanned, you have to pay extra, beyond what you paid to have them scanned. You can pay for one month of download ability, but most people won't see that link, and will end up paying for one year ($150). But whichever plan you choose, it has to be set up to auto-renew. So if you already paid for the scanning, here is how to deal with these criminals: Pay the $15 for one month of Kinoke. Download all of your photos. Cancel your account the next day. You have to get on their chat system with them to cancel your account. They will tell you that there is a link on their website where you can cancel your account without getting on chat with them, but there is not. read more

I had scan cafe scan some slides for me. I signed up for what I thought was a one time fee to download my files digitally. I now see that it was an ongoing monthly subscription fee. This is incredibly deceptive! It should be a one time fee and should be clearly stated. Oh, and my slides were lost when UPS tried to return them. I have used ScanCafe three times in the past. Most recently, I sent them a VHS tape and requested a memory stick with the digital file. Alas, they stated they were unable to read the VHS. They send me two memory sticks, both having the same photos. I requested a refund ($19) and they responded that I have received a memory stick. WHAT? The process takes a long time, but it's worth it. I received excellent customer service throughout even when I had to change my return address for my pictures and videos, and helping me change the storage subscription after I accidentally selected the wrong one. BEWARE, ScanCafe will rip you off. I recently contacted them after getting some 35mm slides scanned (mediocre quality but OK) several months ago and noticed ScanCafe taking my money from my credit card without my explicit permission. I used the on-line download option to save time and money, and downloaded the copied JPEG files in about five minutes and never returned to their site again, until I noted the fraudulent $9.99/month charges on my credit card statement. When I contacted ScanCafe about this fraudulent charge, they responded that the "Terms and Conditions" I clicked on when I ordered the slide copies automatically enrolled me in a monthly storage "subscription." I don't doubt that buried somewhere in the fine print of my online order "Terms and Conditions," ScanCafe Corporation may have included some kind of legally defensible fine print to implicitly grant permissions to establish a rebuttable presumption that I would be charged indefinitely for monthly "subscription" charge. I would view such a buried permission as a dishonest business practice and that Scan Cafe appears to be an organized criminal enterprise rather than service provider Do not be deceived, Scan Café's business model is not to copy slides or photos. The Scan Café business model appears to be based on the "razor blade/toner cartridge" example of charging a relatively cheap product/service up front and then creating a long term obligation to pay by setting up this monthly auto charge for a subscription you never intended to buy. Scan Café adds insult to this injury by making it nearnly impossible to cancel this bogus "subscription." When I logged into their web site and scrolled to the link in my account and repeatedly tried clicking on "Manage Subscription" I was unable to cancel the charges for the bogus subscription because it is a completely DEAD LINK.. The link only sent me to a big graphic heavy page advertising additional services. My goal was not to seek additional services and pay more money; my goal was to cancel the subscription and pay less/zero money. A so-called "Customer Service" agent provided no additional assistance beyond what I already attempted myself several times by going to this dead non-functioning link on their web site. The web site link to "Manage Subscription" does not function to allow customers to cancel a subscription. Finally, when I told them I never knowingly ordered or authorized charges for a "subscription," and requested a refund, they said it was their "policy" to never issue any refunds (I suspect when they were in school they were failing students doing lousy work and told their teachers, "it is my policy not to accept an F on a term paper."). Again, Scan Café is more of an organized criminal enterprise using deceptive business practices than a legitimate service provider. The fact that ScanCafe remains in business reflects a failure of the market system. I urge all potential customers to take this business elsewhere and eliminate this dishonest company from the market. Very misleading as far as schedule. My relatively small set of slides took 3.5 months to get back to me. Every time I checked on status they said everything would be done in two weeks. Two weeks later I would check again, and was told another two weeks. This happened over and over again. I don't feel they were honest with me when ordering, or giving me updates. read more

They took 5 months to get my .tiff scans back to me and they were horribly blurry. I did a comparison with my local photo store on a few scans and they were ten times better both in clarity and color representation. I would be very careful with this company. read more

Sent a cassette tape with music to be transferred to a memory stick. Received the memory stick, cost $50. Music sounded terrible, wrong speed used. Scancafe said they would redo for free. Then randomly charged $11.75 to my credit card. Then charged $49.90 for redo. Took 5 months to get a refund for $49.90 redo. They had me download the redo before returning the cassette tape to make sure it sounded ok. Thought they were doing me a favor. Instead, they started charging $9.99 a month to my credit card for a membership, cloud service. Never received anything from them about a membership or recurring payment. Total rip off, scammers. They should be called Scam Cafe. I am a pro photographer and have had negatives scanned in the past. I sent them my negs, marked in red for the ones I wanted scanned. The original order I put a note on it stating the negs to be scanned were marked in red, please call if there are any issues. Then I get an email a week later stating they only scan ALL materials sent so instead of $156 it will be $540. I said I am not going to do that so please return my negs. I already paid for the shipping both ways, and for a thumb drive. No reply, then days later they email and say they already started scanning so the only way to get my negs back is to Forfeit my original payment. What a scam. They have no interest in trying to solve the problem or give you service just scam you for 4 times the money estimated. Avoid them at all costs. They Kept my $156 I paid in advance and did nothing. Scancafe provided me with a gallery of bad color scans. The scans were black and white negatives and color slides. All the slides looked like very bad dupes. Instead of sharp scans I got soft images with blown out highlights and a very soft look. I used to get the same look when I had to make dupes of film with film. Some of the color scans were horribly edited. I had scanned some of the same images with a film scanner at home with better results. I had hoped ScanCafe could scan bulk orders quicker than I could scan at home. They could not. I used a coupon so the cost was not as high as it could be. Still I consider this to be a waste of money. To complete my order I was I had to pay for a cloud subscription to download my images so I did not have to have them returned on a drive for even more cost. I cancelled the subscription but it was an additional step. Overall I can't recommend them. read more

I just submitted two albums of pages of slides to ScanCafe. After a month, I called to figure out what was happening, not having been updated. I was told that the slides had all been scanned and they were now being checked for red eye (which none of mine had), dust, etc. for quality control or whatever. Great. A week later I just got my email to check the files online. Only the images are often very poor and a lot of them are frankly blurry. I know because I have some of them in my computer to compare and mine make theirs look horrible. I have just written customer service and complained that I cannot accept these. Now we will see if they will rescan or return and credit. I really don't want to wait another month...and from what others here have written, are they seriously getting scanned in India? Gee, I think I see a quality control issue looming very large here. read more

I've used ScanCafe for years, and they have scanned thousands of photos and slides for me. But they missed scanning part of a recent order, and when I brought it to my attention, refused to offer any sort of discount or compensation. They said I wouldn't have to pay to ship them, which was a laugh because I had already paid for shipping with the original batch. It makes me wonder what else they have overlooked along the way. Found an envelope of old negatives, a number of which merited converting to prints to send to my Mom and all of which were worth scanning to digital to preserve. Not one of the local mom-and-pops that I tried to patronise first returned any of my calls, website requests or Yelp requests. Bit my tongue, filled out my request and shipped all my negs to ScanCafe. First nit: I couldn't find a way to request both the prints and the image scans in one form, which was annoying. So I just shut up and issued two orders separately. Received the link to see the scans, at which time I was required to pay my balance, and then: second nit. It took forever to get my prints ... but I got them, and they were as good as could be expected from old negatives. The really good thing was that my original negatives also came back well-packed and pristine - so we do have trust. And I liked the online model - worked well for ordering and examining my scans when they appeared. I expect to return to ScanCafe for more neg scans and to try some hardcopy print scans (and probably at least a few restorations/touchups). I was overall very pleased and would recommend them to anyone. read more

They should rename this place the ScamCafe. I sent in some old super 8 reels to be digitized. I sent in a 7" reel and four 3" reels. The 7" reel was only about half full and there is a ruler on the side of the reel to let you know how many feet of film are on the reel. It was at just about 200 feet. So I estimated 400 feet. They reached out to me several times to tell me that my footage estimation was incorrect and that they would like more money because an estimation, based on a full 7" reel would be 600 feet. This was annoying because I know how to estimate footage and because what difference does it make since they won't release any of the transfer until they receive the balance of the bill in full. And if they would have just opened the 7" reel and looked, they too could have figured out there was only 200" on it. As it turns out I was billed for 407 feet. The transfer itself is fine, but I'm not sure I see the added value/expense of either added brightness or scratch repair since my finished transfers were still full of lots of scratches. So six months after I download my files I get billed for a month of storage. I didn't sign up for storage. I'm guessing there is a box I didn't uncheck so that I was automatically signed up. A deceitful business practice, IMO. So I called the day after the charge and talked to a representative who promised me that she would submit something to review the return of my payment and also cancel my subscription so that I wouldn't get charged again. Neither of those things happened and I was just charged again. I chose this place because of the claims of scratch repairs and added brightness, even though it was more expensive than other transfer houses. I'm not sure it was worth the added cost, and I got a whole lot of hassle and headache to boot. There are plenty of places that do this kind of work, I would look elsewhere if I need more transfers. Also, I forgot to mention that they send out spam emails to you all the time. I also now see they have denied returning my money to me, it got lost in all the spam, so I guess they won't give me back the money for the next month as well even though I asked the lady to cancel my subscription. Clearly these people don't care about customer service, it's all about the money. Find a better business to spend your money on! read more

I sent some old movies to be digitized. They did a reasonably good job but it has taken an incredibly long time to get back the originals. Really strange. They also started charging me for a monthly subscription to host the digital files. I did not sign up for the subscription and so far they have refused to refund this monthly fee or cancel the subscription. It seems like this business could be great but their customer service is not good and generally the way they operate is off kilter and odd. Not sure what is going on behind the scenes but something seems awry and any customer should be on their guard a little. read more

Shockingly careless! I had a heartbreaking experience with them. I sent many boxes of scrupulously organized and labeled slides from my grandparents for scanning. Each box labeled by year with details of the contents. They were returned completely jumbled IN THE WRONG BOXES and the scans didn't follow any order. It was as if someone had dropped all the slides on the floor and put them back in any which way. I've lost weeks of my time returning the slides to the original order, with no end in sight. Be warned and consider elsewhere if you have large quantities of slides. Very sad experience. if I could give this place zero stars I would. I had 1000 scans done from both slides and negatives - both b and w and color. I paid extra for high resolution and for someone to oversee the scanning at ScanCafe. I received them back - and all of the images were soft. I emailed Scan Cafe - they had someone review them - and agreed they were not in focus. And they would redo them. I went through the whole process again - received new scans on drives - during which, we moved so it took me a few months to look at the scans. And - the b and w scans were ok, but all of the color images were still soft! To top it off, the drives they sent me were faulty - and all kept ejecting from my computer in around 30 seconds!! There was no way to download any of the b and w images. I emailed several times - and finally got the message that "too much time had passed and they could no longer help me." $$$$ money spent and NOTHING to show. DO NOT USE THEM. read more

I mailed them a book of tapes that I bought at a conference. This binder held 22 double sided tapes, all of which were clear tapes of a speaker at a conference. The ScanCafe copies had poor quality audio on 14 tapes or the 22 tapes so that I could not hear what was being said. I had to listen to all the original tapes I provided in order to identify which of their recordings they made were faulty. This is a waste of my time. And this happened before. When I asked for a refund, they refuse. They want to charge me to redo their faulty recordings! In addition I had prepaid for another order of photos and tapes that I had not yet shipped; they refuse to refund my money on unused services. I can't trust their quality of service for audio tapes It took over 3 months to receive my items after they processed them. When I complained that their 14 of their audio copies are done poorly, they cite a 30-day refund. That is invalid since they didn't return them to me long after this date. And they want to charge me to redo them. This is the second time they did a bad job of audio. read more

Following is an email I sent ScanCafe that outlines my series of bad customer experiences. In the end they denied my request to refund the extra money I paid for express service. --- I'm pretty frustrated with my experience with the ScanCafe website, customer service, and overall outcome and think it's important for you to understand everything that has happened.  My experience has been pretty terrible. I have wasted extensive time dealing with it all. I have had a number of problems, setbacks, and a missed deadline throughout my experience.  For example. The express turnaround that I purchased was not honored. When placing an order, the mobile experience "guarantees" 6-8 day turnaround (see attached) but other sources say 10 days. I emailed customer service about this discrepancy while my order was in progress, trying to resolve the issue and ensure I would receive my order when expected, but those emails were not answered. Finally I had to call (twice) only to find out that my order was not completed for an unexplained reason. I missed a critical project deadline because I relied on the promised turnaround time but in the end received my order a week late.  The fact that you "deliver" an order by a specific date but don't spell out in advance that it takes ANOTHER 1-2 days to be billed, review, and then actually receive the finished images digitally -- that is very misleading to customers who are on a deadline and believe that "finish" means "receive my scans." My project delivery is ruined as a result.  The review and checkout process is confusing at best. Among other issues, it gave me three different totals for the amount due and I didn't change a thing from one step to the next.  Last but not least, I paid $16 for express delivery and requested a refund of that fee but it's been two days and I have not received a refund or any communication about it. read more

ScanCafe scanned a collection of 28 sports team and school class pictures. When they were made available, it was not clear how to view them without paying. This didn't seem illogical, so we paid the difference. I waited a few days to download the photos and they sent back the originals. When I did go to view the scans, I discovered that most of them had very obvious scratches and speckles similar to when someone uses a dusty scanner. Their website states that "Each of your images will be reviewed and corrected as needed, one at a time, by an assigned technician" This is a lie. Had any individual looked at the scans they would have immediately noticed the errors. This is not a quibble about color correction which could differ depending on the individual. If I can, I will attach sections that show the artifacts. I was eventually connected with Gonzalo Anza whose title is Customer Experience Manager. I asked about the promise to review every photo and he stated that they were reviewed but the techs may not have focused on my issues. (I don't see how that isn't a lie) I asked for my money back and he refused stating that they don't refund for "completed" jobs. The job was less than $30. I told him the job of executing a clean scan was definitely not "completed". At no point would Mr. Anza or anybody at the company take responsibility and say "we screwed up and this is embarrassing that this is the product we put out" or something similar. They surely know it and I don't understand why they are so concerned with not admitting their error. I asked to talk with an owner or someone above Mr. Anza who would understand and was told he was my last resort. What Mr. Anza offered was to rescan the photos which would have required me to send them across country again. What was the point of taking that risk when there was no reason to believe ScanCafe was capable of succeeding? I do not trust them with my photos. I set about figuring out how to stop the CC charge but decided to wait a couple days in case Mr. Anza changed his mind. ScanCafe proceeded to touch up all the damaged scans passably. The originals are still much more vibrant than the scans. They did leave one swimming pool green (even after knowing they were correcting a past error they couldn't figure this out) which I discovered because I had to meticulously check each new photo against the original. We went through the process again and they fixed that. At this point, ScanCafe has achieved the state of me not needing to stop the CC charge. That's it. Their motto could be "we do our job so poorly that you'll have to fight with us just to do it OK until you get tired and don't stop the CC charge" I scanned many items with them in the past when they were a startup and the photos went to India to scan. Whatever has changed with the Indiana operation, I will have nothing to do with them anymore. read more

Where do I begin. I won't. It's too long. Just do not use this company at any cost. I started the scanning process in August and it's now December.They misplaced photos, then found them, then scanned them lo-res instead of hi-res, they scanned published photo tear sheets so the layout and credit were cropped out. Trying to pay, I finally called one of their very confused but well-meaning customer service employees who informed me the charges were all incorrect on the website. I then tried to glean, a sentence at a time what were my options to insure my photos being sent UPS Ground. He didn't know. I am ready to send a driver 2 states away to pick up my originals which are valuable. How a company can handle valuable and sensitive printed matter with such utter incompetence is utterly terrifying and unacceptable. Again - do not use this company. read more

Too bad there are not negative stars. Not only were the images ridiculously poor quality, it took multiple phone calls to get them done in less than a month. This place shouldn't even be in business. I asked how they could not only be this poor quality but how some QC person could have deemed them adequate. They had no answer. Just an embarrassment. Quality was so incredibly bad I'm not even going to download them. I plan to write scathing reviews of the horrible quality everywhere possible. I am not downloading the images, which are ridiculously bad, and am just paying the difference because I need my slides. Incredibly poor customer service, as the best the person could offer was to make excuses about the equipment & offer to rescan the slides" on equipment that has already proven to be subpar, & which would produce scans that would, incredibly, be deemed good enough when compared to the pristine images I said. Summary report: Whatever else ScanCafe may do well, they are far from ready for prime time to convert 8mm and miniDV video. Details: I heard great things about ScanCafe from a friend. As I had over 5000 slides and negatives, this seemed like a great opportunity to get them digitized. My first order in 2016 was 11 slides as an evaluation order. These slides were 60 years old, had been shot on Ektachrome, and had turned pink with age (a common failing of such slides). It took one review on their website and one rework and they made it look like new. That convinced me. Between then and late 2017 I sent them more than 5000 other slides, negatives and prints, some pink like the first set. The pinks also needed rework but came out great. If this review stopped here, it would be five stars. Unfortunately there's more. Based on their great work with my slides, I figured ScanCafe was the one to digitize my 58 8mm and 36 miniDV video cassettes. I could have uploaded them from the camcorders that shot them, but that would require 1.5 - 2 hours per cassette, a minimum of more than 140 hours and lots of wear and tear on the equipment. I was more than willing to pay them to do it for me. I also opted to pay extra for .mp4 images on a hard disk drive, as I expected to edit the results. I sent the cassettes off in June, 2020. I was aware of difficulties they might have due to the pandemic, and was fully prepared to wait however long they took to get it right. They told me they were ready in October, 2020. Unlike slides, they do not offer an online review of their work before mailing your originals and the new hard disk drive. They should have. Of the 94 originals, only 36 (30/58 8mm and 6(!)/36 miniDV) were acceptable. The rest had tracking errors (the 8mm) or were rife with digital artifacts and audio dropouts (the miniDV). It's not a case of faulty tape; my camcorders produce perfect images. I immediately complained, and they opened a rework order, no extra charge (except I had to mail back the tapes with faulty conversions). Fine so far, they'd had to rework slides and had done so successfully. I expected they would pay closer attention this time. This time they did make their work available for review online. But results were incremental. Over the course of three rework cycles ending in March, 2021, they corrected 18 8mm, but only 2 miniDVs, then announced that for the remaining 40 that was the best they could do. Their best included hum artifacts in many videos and some audios. I paid over $2K for which I got ~$1200 worth of value, but ScanCafe won't refund the difference. I'm now looking forward to finding another vendor or manually uploading those 40 cassettes. I won't be using ScanCafe any longer. read more

My relationship with Scancafe goes back to 2009. I loved them. It WAS a 5-star experience from beginning to end. The Scancafe of today bears zero resemblance to what they were. My most recent transaction was to digitize several home videos from my wife's childhood. Where before you could expect to see a somewhat stabilized and cleaned up image better than simply chucking the tape in the VCR, the digital files provided were actually WORSE. A large "Video calibration" message was imprinted on the videos that wasn't there in our originals. There was zero improvement to the quality or tracking. I brought this to their attention but they sent the tapes back anyway after a run around with customer service (another area that has lapsed) so it was 'too late'. They did apologize and asked that I send the tapes back a second time, to their partial credit. And then after all that, produced a video that addressed none of the issues that caused me to send them back in the first place. The same VCR message, missing segments, and just as poor as the first attempt. I eventually was told that there was 'no way' to remove the message from the video or stop their VCR from putting that into the digital copy. In the end, I paid a premium to ship my items away and have a good quality (at least considering that they're VHS) product to give my mother in law for Christman. It took over a year (so had to buy her something else) and I would have gotten a better result taking them to Walmart or plugging MY VCR into the video-input on my computer for free. The copies are nothing like the tapes they digitized for me back when they did this in India and I absolutely would not recommend using this service unless you don't have a local means of digitizing a VHS. I have to imagine that profit over quality has also spilled over into their photo scanning and other services as well but can't verify and I have no intention of losing even more money finding out. Proceed with caution. read more

It took 3 months to process two 1-hour tapes and all I received was 15 minutes of choppy, incomprehensible video. They didn't even check their work. Additionally, I received an email from the ScanCafe CEO Anderson Schoenrock politicizing their problems, blaming delays on supplemental unemployment insurance benefits being provided by the CARES act. To me, this reads as the CEO blaming his poor performance on external factors rather than his own incompetence. I do not wish to reward this type of business leadership. read more

Don't use them. They take forever and the scans are horrible. I sent an entire order back to them because of dust and smudges on their scanner that showed up on most of my scans. The re-do was just as bad, with smudges, scratches and lines on my photo scans. Scanning on my ten year old home printer was 1,000% times better quality. read more

This company was good 10 years ago, but no longer. I sent a large batch of slides to them in October, and they scanned only 3/4 of them. At least 1/3 of those scanned are bad, due to dirt smears and lint added to the scan. Most were cropped, and the color was off. They did not return my slides or the scans until I called to complain in January. All in all, a very bad experience. read more

When I called, the manager stated that I sent in a different "media form" than I should have. He actually listened to my recorded call from March and ADMITS that the representative NEVER TOLD ME THIS, but then said that their "terms and conditions" allow them to do this! antway!! My company used ScanCafe when their scanning operation was in India. They scanned thousands of transparencies for my company and the results were great. The company relocated its scanning operations to Chicago and the quality of scans has declined demonstrably - sharpness, exposure, and color balance. I attempted to correct the scans in Photoshop to no avail. To its credit, ScanCafe attempted to rescan the images- the results were the same. I then requested a refund and did not receive a reply. Then, I had another company scan a sample number of transparencies and also tried Walgreens. I have shared the results. Scanning equipment and software have made great strides over the years. Sadly, it ScanCafe has not kept up with the times and their service is now far below what I experienced previously. read more
