I purchased a Leica lens listed as "mint / 99% of new condition." Before buying, I specifically asked the store to inspect the optics, yet the lens arrived with visible internal haze. When I contacted them, I learned that their "180-day warranty" sounds reassuring but is extremely one-sided. Everything is "at their discretion," meaning they decide whether to repair, replace, or refund, whichever is cheapest for them. Their policy doesn't guarantee a proper repair or uphold the listed condition. If a fix isn't "cost-effective," they simply choose to refund instead of making it right, and if you accept a partial refund, your warranty is void from that point forward. I was well within the return period, so I opted for a refund, but buyers should beware: the condition grading can be far off from what's advertised, and the warranty language works almost entirely in the company's favor. For a business with so many positive reviews, this experience was disappointing. Their inspection and warranty process seem designed more around minimizing cost than truly standing behind their listings. read more

I placed an order 12 days ago, and the package appears to be lost -- there have been no USPS tracking updates since it was shipped. I've contacted customer service twice, and each time I was told to "keep waiting," with no real solution offered. What's especially frustrating is that they refuse to reship or issue a refund until USPS provides an update, which could take weeks. This essentially means I'm expected to wait nearly a month with no product and no accountability on their end. Very disappointing experience. I understand shipping delays can happen, but the lack of proactive support and unwillingness to resolve the issue is unacceptable. read more

Jake Sneath, the Used Sales Manager, handled the appraisal with knowledge, transparency, and speed. He offered what felt like a very fair value and even took the time to give us his card to assist with the rest of our collection still at home. That level of service is rare and much appreciated. A quick heads-up: they do have a $200 check limit, or you can opt for store credit--good to know in case you're bringing in a larger batch to sell. I believe this place is very racist- I put my name down to be put on the list for a sold out camera and after waiting weeks I called to check if my name was still on there and they randomly removed my name off the list. I put my foreign name down and my friend Ashley (non foreign name) put her name and number the same exact time as me but coincidentally her name was kept on the list. After trying to reach the manager I was told he couldn't speak to me but he did put my name back on. No apology or no accountability on their part. Just hateful for no reason. If you don't have an American name- don't go here. They don't want your business. I have the call recordings to prove all of this and to prove I called weeks before. read more

This place use to be good. Bring a professional photographer for over 40 years, I always took pride in doing business with this company but it seems like they are passing a lot of beat up equipment to the consumer and not being accurate in their description or rating of equipment. Just recently I purchased a battery grip that was sent without a battery tray and with grip molding coming off. It looked horrible and I'm sure it has issues once I was able to put batteries into it. I am going to do my business elsewhere. Customer support did nothing to help in the return by paying return shipping. read more

I'm not sure why I haven't reviewed this place yet. My experience with Roberts Camera goes back to the early 2000s when a bunch of us student photographers used to meet up in the parking lot and swap gear. Most of you may know them from their used gear online store. So they do a number of things that are great. First place, the classes are wonderful. Second, the level of service you're going to receive for all levels is stellar. I've never been upsold here. Nobody ever gave me a weird look for coming from large and medium format analogue. Third, the used gear is cleaned pretty well - something that's inconsistent in the used market. Ex I purchased a Sony A7R ii around two years ago here, and the sales folks didn't upsell. They understood my application. Instead of pushing me into an A7R iv at three times the price (there was a $500 discount at the time), I went home with the right camera for me. read more

I could not be more impressed with a business. I have been looking for a specific camera for several months. This camera was sold out everywhere. I looked everywhere, including all the major camera stores. I happened to do a Google search and Roberts camera came up. Their website showed the camera was in stock and a quick phone call confirmed that they had one. I completed my online purchase at 3 o'clock in the afternoon central standard time which would've been 4 o'clock their time. I was on a business trip in Indianapolis from Chicago when I saw this wonderful family owned camera store on Yelp! I have to say that the store was impressive and the employees were very kind with smiles on their faces besides one of them who really put me in a sour mood... I had a question about printing some of my photos from my trip and the woman behind the counter completely ignored me at first and was on her phone.... I was able to get her attention but when I did she was rude and just not pleasant. The employee had blonde hair I believe her name was Taylor! I had a really great experience here! I had been on a hunt for somewhere to develop my fun disposable camera that I took on vacation with me. Apparently this is one of the only places left in Indy that will do it! I arrived and had a quick process to get my film in order. I was told to arrive back the following Tuesday to pick up the prints. Tuesday rolled around. When I went back, they didn't have my film ready. The employee working at the time said the envelope actually said it would be ready Wednesday. But he said if I can't wait 15 minutes, he will get the prints ready for me real quick, which I thought was really nice and great customer service. I was worried about parking because many of the other reviews on here mention that their parking isn't great. Parking is a little weird, there is some in the front of the building and in an alley on the side. However, I haven't had a problem with parking. Both times I went there were plenty of open spots to park, but I will say the spots are a little tight! read more

I bought a Mamiya 645 body on eBay advertised as a fully functional body by Roberts. After making offers twice and being rejected (Roberts never made a counteroffer) I finally accepted their $5.00 discount. A few days later the camera arrived in my eager hands. Imagine my disappointment when I tried it and the film advance jammed after the first wind! The camera simply would not advance and I was left with a useless piece of junk, having to drive to a UPS far from home and return it. I've been a customer at Roberts Camera for a while since I started to get into film. I appreciate how they have a portion of the store dedicated to all things about film, making it easier to find what I need. As well as spend more time in the area of the store where I want to be. Also, Roberts Camera does a great job of almost always have a reasonable size of film in stock to choose from, ranging from Kodak ColorPlus to Kodak Portra 800. My only wish is that they provided a service where the film had the option to be rushed. For almost 50 years, I have been a happy patron of Roberts Camera. I started going when it was still on South Meridian and it was being run by Bruce's mother and father. Its focus in those days was more on jewelry than cameras. Gradually that changed and Bruce was in charge. Now it has moved to East St. Clair and is being run by Bruce's daughter. Tt rivals B&H Photo in NYC for the breadth of its products. My latest experience is just one more in a long list of experiences of why I like it so much. I had asked to be notified when a certain lens was available. I received the notification on Saturday and purchased it on line for pickup. We couldn't get in Saturday so we picked it up today. Not only was it ready for me, but there was a sugar cookie sitting on it with Phil Gibson's picture on it. Phil has been helping me for the last several years. He is not only very helpful, he is also very knowledgeable! The cookie was admittedly a silly reminder that I have not been forgotten as a loyal customer, but it also brought me joy! I travel a lot for my job, and sometimes I stop in at camera stores around the mid-west for last minute equipment needed, or just out of curiosity to see what they have. I'm not just saying this because I live in Indy, but Roberts is easily the best camera store in the mid-west. Their huge store and vast collection of camera equipment, both for photo and video, is an artists' paradise. Their staff is not only very friendly (they're quick to remember first names of repeat clients), but they're also very knowledgable. I've gotten frustrated at other camera stores when I asked an employee a question and they had no idea what I was talking about. That's never been an issue at Roberts. They have not only sold me great equipment but also answered questions about it later on, if I had one. I couldn't recommend Roberts highly enough. read more

I purchased a new x-t3. The packaging did not appear new so I checked the shutter count immediately, and determined it had well over 200 clicks. I emailed them and they openly admitted in return emails the camera had been returned by someone else but assured me it would work as if it were new. Roberts is one of the few remaining stores fully dedicated to photography.You name the brand, they stock it new or used. The downtown location is well organized and kept extremely clean, so you can find what you're looking for relatively fast. Why 5 stars? They were extremely helpful in purchasing a new camera, that retailed the same as the manufacture's website. After having issues with a manufacture directly, it was refreshing to call the store verify that the product, that seems to be on back order everywhere including the manufacture, is in stock;have it pulled prior to arrival; and purchase said item and walk out the door all within 1 hour, with 50 minutes including travel time. Tips: + There is limited free parking right along the utterance of the building, else expect to deal with street parking. + They do offer courses on photography if you're looking at just starting out or to enhance your skills. + It's like the Ikea/Target of Cameras and accessories in the sense that you could walkout with more items than you originally intended to and have your wallet be a little bit lighter. read more

I've only ever gotten prints from here but both times have been less than favorable experiences. I should have known better after the first time but the price couldn't be beat so I thought I'd try again. Oops. The first time they left white edges on each side of the prints. I thought it was an honest mistake and I put the wrong size, but it was correct. Luckily side wasn't a huge issue so I just grabbed a paper cutter and fixed them myself. No offer from the store to fix it, they just told me I did it wrong. Great customer service! This time I got a canvas print done. After getting a vague email from the Carmel location telling me it was "complete" (not ready for pickup, just done) I called to make sure it was ready. When I picked it up, I stood at the counter for a good minute or two (with other employees looking at me) until the guy was done writing in a book. Then he took me up front to check it out and tried to charge me after I had already paid online. I looked up the order to make sure it already charged the card, and he said "okay, we'll go with that." So, what are we done here? He seemed visibly irritated. Not sure if it was with me or the fact that someone else messed it up? Even the print itself wasn't quite what I expected - not bad for the price, but I expected a little more. I thought about taking some classes here, but after these experiences I'm thinking I should look elsewhere. read more

I have become a bit of a film photography hobbyist recently and Roberts Camera is the closest and best option to have my film developed. Their are a few people behind the photo lab desk that are very nice, but I have also encountered some workers that aren't so great with their customers. Not that they don't do the job, but they aren't being very friendly. However, as I said, there are a few people that are easy and helpful (to someone that doesn't know everything about film photography) that I am usually lucky enough to work with. I liked going to Roberts because I felt that I could always drop off a roll of film and I could pick it up (developed and scanned) the next day for $8. I was fixing my camera and couldn't take film in for about a month. Upon my latest visit I learned that they have raised their price per roll of film (for develop and scan) to $10. It isn't a terrible price raise, but then they told me that it would be two days before I could get my scans. This frustrates me because I am literally paying more for a slower production time. All of this in mind, I am absolutely thinking about sending my film to an online competitor (costs $11 for develop and scan). Sure it'd be a longer wait, but for $1 more I can get my film developed by the best in the business. Kind of disappointed lately. read more

When I enter a photography store, I expect cynicism, snarky remarks, and brand fanatics. I didn't really get that when I entered Roberts. Odd. It was raining quite powerfully and the area was being prepared for the Super Bowl. I haven't been downtown that much ever, so it was a bit confusing, so getting to the parking lot was somewhat difficult and required more turns than desired. The parking lot is just next to the building on the south side and it's a bit cramped. As I had been drenched, the person at the door was joking about what a lovely day it was and since it wasn't snowing, he was correct. I believe his name was Bruce, and we discussed why I was there and he showed me the Olympus E-5 body. He made no remarks about how it couldn't possibly be the equipment for me, and he was the owner of a Canon 5D Mk II and a Canon 7D. This kind of behaviour was amazing to me, as I had been berated at a store in the Orlando area by a brand fanatic working there. What's more, the price was $200 below the typical price whether online or in stores. As we finished with my purchase of that, I was able to check some other equipment and he gave me suggestions on tripod sets. Update: Roberts and Olympus sponsored a photo walk with new equipment, including two samples of a lens that won't be available until late November, and everyone involved was quite helpful without anything being sold. Earlier in the day, I bought my first tripod after nearly 40 years and it was fairly simple. The salesperson asked what price range, found something that not only suited my needs but was quite a bit less without sacrificing quality or switching to a cheaper brand. It was even $0.11 cheaper than Adorama. I'm still surprised that I had a positive experience buying photographic equipment. To those who have negative experiences: I feel bad for you because I believe everyone should be treated well. I've been berated in photography stores other than Roberts and I know that it's not pleasant. I sold equipment in the 1970s, and I know how frustrating it can be to be asked time and again for advice and have someone return to tell me that they bought the suggested equipment somewhere for less. If you're buying a camera body under $1000, there isn't much in it for the store, unfortunately. They should not treat you differently because of what you're buying, though. read more

Dealt with Roberts for decades. They are a "real" camera store with a good inventory and people you can talk to. That's important. We need good local camera stores -- they're dropping like flies in a Raid test lab -- and we need people to support them. About the only "ding" I'll give is that I wish I had received a dated sales receipt with the serial number of the camera body which is what they provided for eons (still have some of those pink NCR paper receipts for lenses and accessories). I got recommended to go with this place by a friend. I was looking for an affordable, great quality, and fast place to get my disposable camera developed. I didn't want to go with your average Walgreens or CVS because you don't know who is handling your film. Robert's Camera is family owned as well. The building was very clean and organized. I didn't expect it to be this big either! It was a very fast and easy visit. The only downside I experienced is COVID delayed their shipping so film developing has been delayed too.
