The second visit was to hike the trail along the lake. For the beach time, it was a week day and it too crowded. I was able to snag a bench near the resort's public beach and enjoy the iconic views of Mt Shasta. As for the lakeside trail, it goes all the way around and is approximately 7 miles. I was short on time, so did a 3 mile out and back. Along the way, there are forested paths, Mt Shasta views and meadows to enjoy. The trail wasn't well signed and I lost it at some points. Since I was only doing a small section of it, I just followed the lakeshore best I could on my out and back. Early morning, it was a peaceful place. I'd love to come back and see about kayaking the lake or doing the entire trail. Lovely spot and a nice way to unwind near Shasta

It is one of the only authentic guest ranches on the West Coast (I have worked at others since that claimed 5 stars and never once had as much fun as I did at CCR). The trails and mountains are beautiful, the horses well behaved and healthy, the food is AMAZING, and the cabins are adorable! I was even able to be there recently for the Thanksgiving holiday to reunite with or meet just about every member of the Hartman family! It was pretty incredible to get to enjoy the ranch and the gorgeous Trinity Alps in the winter for the first time too. I cannot even believe some of these scathing reviews I just read! I can understand frustration if you feel like your expectations weren't met in a situation where you paid money, but this particular experience was such an isolated one that it simply doesn't speak for the ranch/accommodations/etc. quality as a whole. Coffee Creek Ranch is a family-owned, family-friendly mountain resort where people go to get away from the chaos of their daily lives and spend a few days (at least) and try out some of the many unique activities offered. It's not a place to travel all the way too if you are going to rush or try to fit too much into only a few hours. In the entire time I worked there I don't remember seeing one guests leave dissatisfied - except perhaps if they didn't catch a fish, or over-slept for the Breakfast Ride, or ran out of time to do karaoke on their last night or something like that! I just reached out to Ruth again last week to schedule a romantic weekend getaway for myself and my boyfriend in May and I absolutely can't wait!!

I needed gear- waders and sunglasses that I had lost on the trail and was told I would need to go into Dunsmuir to Ted Fay's shop- which I love but hoping there might be a place in town- like an Ace or fly shop. After a search on the Web I found Mccloud Outdoors - what a find!!! It is small but large on items needed for fishing and camping. I was able to get WOMENS sized waders, polarized sunglasses contemplated even more. They were not overpriced, very helpful, helped with fly selection. And to top it all off, the BEST pastries and coffee shop attached next door. I have been letting everyone know about this gem- everything and more I needed!

They had the most delicious house made scones and coffee that even finicky coffee drinkers like my better half enjoyed recommend and will definitely be back in the future (i.e. tomorrow morning for biscuits and gravy breakfast )

I brought my 8-year-old son Brandon along for his first real fly fishing adventure, and Jack made it a day we'll both remember forever. From the moment we hit the water, Jack was patient, knowledgeable, and great with my son. The float down the river was absolutely stunning, and the fishing action was steady throughout the day. Jack knew exactly where to go, and we hooked into some beautiful rainbows... 12 strikes and 9 landed, some north of 18 inches. Jack grilled up a hot ribeye steak lunch riverside--seriously next level. It felt more like a gourmet adventure than a fishing trip at times. Spotting wildlife along the river including deer and a bald eagle as we tackled the mild rapids was awesome! I've fished this river from the banks for years, but the float trip really gets you to locations that you can't otherwise access. If you're looking for an experienced, fun, and family-friendly guide on the Upper Sac, Jack Trout is your guy. We'll be back for sure.
