The amount of inventory and quality is impressive. Its variety is what I liked best, along with the knowledgable, helpful staff. We had never been to SBI in Windsor before but went there to look at tile/stone options to replace our old redwood deck which had become a haven for rats and increased fire danger. Howard was very helpful in helping us and we quickly moved away from tile to a more natural Travertine stone in silver/white that came in four sizes and addressed the natural/random pattern look we were after. We also found a perfect gas fired wood stove in a catalog from their suppliers; Eldorado Outdoor. Best of all, Howard recommended a fantastic installer I cannot recommend highly enough. The somewhat oddly named Asapp Pro Hardscape and Masonry. Cesar and his team of excellent professionals not only removed the old deck, but also took out the old 1950s cracked concrete below it prior to pouring/leveling a new concrete foundation for our new Patio. We could not be happier with the results. Photos are posted in my Yelp review of Asapp Pro. SBI's weakness does not lie in price/value but rather in communication of the status of your materials. In order to get answers/direction I had to pester them and also point out the msrp of the fire bowl we chose was half what they were initially going to charge us. But, the results are outstanding so I recommend SBI with a caveat that you may well find yourself pestering them as well as proactive communication of material status is not their strong suit. read more

SBI rocks!...and sells rocks, landscaping supplies, pavers, soil and more. We did some work on our back yard this past year and our landscaper made most of the SBI visits - thankfully they were open and operating during the pandemic. We popped over there to make a final decision about the color of our small landscaping rocks. Rocks of various colors, shapes, and sizes are on display outside, making for a safe, easy, and quick visit (we didn't even interact with a human, other than over the phone). Seeing the rocks in person, side-by-side vs in a catalogue helped us quickly make a decision. On paper we had leaned toward a tan-colored rock but it looked very YELLOW in person and would not have matched our cool/grey aesthetic. We opted for the salt-and-pepper rocks for the win; our landscaper picked them up and installed them in our yard the same day. I walked in today, and there were two men behind the counter. The first looked at his watch. The second ignored me...I was the only customer there. I finally started talking, explaining my project and what I needed. I was told to walk outside, "toward the freeway and turn left at the shed." What I needed would range in price $500-$1000. So I walked outside to find literally dozens of stacks, not one labeled with any type of price. I wandered around for about 20 minutes, and nobody offered to help. I left. I try to spend money locally, but they obviously didn't want my business. Disappointed. read more

I have been to SBI on several occasions and not had issues. Last week, I entered with my partner and believe I may have been subjected to blatant homophobia. When I approached the counter the two individuals behind it didn't acknowledge me. When I told them what I wanted and said I would need delivery, they said it couldn't be done based on the size of the order -despite the price easily being over $2,000. I was told would need to load the rocks into my care. Very disappointing - it was clear for some reason they were not interested in my business. Maybe the staff was just having a bad day or this is the normal level of customer service, but I won't be back. read more

So ... I'm a DIY kinda guy but, I'm also a guy who gets an idea but doesn't really know exactly how to do some jobs. Now ... landscaping is not that complicated, right? I had this idea to lay some large, flat, "flagstones" on a rustic walkway in our yard. Buy flat rocks. Add dirt. Level. Done. Ooooops!!! There are a lot of choices out there. We gonto SBI Landscape Materials in Windsor, CA and we are greeted as we enter by a young lady behind the counter. Veronica gives us some great info to start and then she leads us into the "yard". Veronica is quite knowledgeable and what she didn't know, she admitted and got the info. Veronica was great!! We decided on slate. Got a great price and a promised delivery day and time. The driver was on time, in the early part of the "delivery window". It was early in the morning. He'd driven atleast an hour. It was freezing cold. And the driver had a smile on his face the whole time. He asked where we wanted the stones set. I told him. He responded, "No problem!!" What a great attitude... at 7:15am and 38 degrees outside. I'm so impressed by my experience with the "people" of SBI! What a pleasure to deal with. I discovered that SBI gives 100% of their Christmas tree sales to Windsor schools, and couldn't resist going here, instead of the dreaded Home Depot. They were friendly as all get-out, and helpful as can be, from trimming, wrapping and tying the tree to the car. The price was just a little higher than HD, but still comparable. I don't have any use for this place other than for purchasing a Christmas tree, so I can't review their products. read more

Needed stone for walls & steps, base rock & gravel and SBI had a great selection between their Windsor & Fulton sites. All-star quality materials, delivered on time & placed like a work of art (the delivery guy had been doing it for 15 yrs, I gave him a tip). Yes, the counter service may frustrate some people but if you need that go to Nordstrom. These folks work high pressure 6-day weeks (used to be 7) and they make everything come out perfect. Walked in twice (once a week ago) and although there were 4-5 people behind the counter we were completely ignored. Finally the third time I spoke and said hello to everyone behind the desk and only after that did they acknowledge us. Really disappointed to have to write this review. I've been replacing my lawn with xeriscape and needed several boulders along with some other supplies and needed delivery to Ukiah and placement of stones. The day SBI scheduled delivery was 1/10/17, day number two of our 10-year storm and everything was soaked. I called right when they opened wondering if they were still coming and the driver was already on his way. I'll try to make this short - the driver wasn't confident that the forklift they use wouldn't sink in my yard in the wet conditions, so not only was he unwilling to place the stones but I was made to feel somehow personally responsible for the situation. He said I would have to pay for a tow truck if he got stuck, and acted like I was putting him in harms way. Kept complaining about the rain. What it came down to was both the driver and the guy at the office at SBI wanted to drop my materials including thousand pound boulders off curbside in front of my house and clean their hands of the situation because it was rainy and they weren't able to follow through on their delivery due to weather conditions. In the end I cancelled my whole order. So that was my experience, not the best. What I can tell you about the business as a whole - I was obsessive about my choices and went to SBI 3 times before settling on materials. What I noticed each time was that I was treated like I was a distraction from some other important big job they were working on. I understand that most of the business a company like this does is with masons but as a homeowner I need more than the usual assistance since I don't know what I want. SBI can't tell you what they have or what it costs. Their organizational system is terrible and many things aren't labeled. Nobody is going to walk out with you and show you the stones, you're on your own. And when you come back in there won't be a way of describing what you liked because it wasn't marked. In the cases when things were marked it took up to 20 minutes for them to produce a price. Basically they have no ability to help you stick to a budget or give an estimate on materials. I gave a second star purely because it seemed they had a pretty decent inventory and I think overall as a business they deserve two stars. read more

If you like customer service and being treated like a paying customer (which I was), do NOT use this company. From the moment we walked in the door, my son and I got the impression that our business wasn't important. Granted, my order was only around $850., not a big job I know, but for me that is a lot of money. Not only was the counter help lacking, but the day of the delivery, the truck driver actually flipped me off while I was rolling down my car window to offer directions to my home. After getting multiple quotes for Bluestone tiles from all over the bay area, we went with SBI because they were the low bid. We were told that our stone would be delivered on Wednesday, and after confirming the order and giving them a credit card on the phone for our $8800 order, they called me a few days later at noon on Tuesday, the day before our order was to be delivered, and told us that they were unable to fill our order. They said that someone else had taken the stone that was in their computer system three days earlier. Jeff, one of the owners with whom I was dealing, said they had 5,500 square feet of the 1.5 inch bluestone in the system when we ordered, but it had all been taken. I had a landscaping crew waiting for a delivery on Wednesday morning, and SBI left me holding the bag, indicating that they wouldn't receive more bluestone to fill my order until the following Friday, and with a landscaping crew waiting, I couldn't afford the delay, which would have been about two weeks beyond when they had told me I would receive it. I knew I should have gone to Bay Area Bluestone in San Rafael, from the second I spoke with them on the phone. Scott at Bay Area Bluestone was so incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. I told my wife that I knew they would be the most expensive, and they were. Live and learn. read more

beware......samples are often totally different from what gets delivered. Don't pay until you have selected each stone if you are having custom work done. I ended up with a bad batch from this company and despite their attempts to make things right I still have messed up stone. I had to tell a friend these pieces weren't "seconds". So we were doing a home landscaping project with pavers recently, so I headed to SBI. How often does one company - especially in the construction business - get Sales, Service and Support 'all' right in a given customer experience? In Sales, Gustavo was so helpful and patient as we selected our materials and planned our project. Hector was on time and efficient with the delivery and precise placement of my materials. And Joe in the yard bent over backwards to help us, both before and after the project with some returns. And finally, despite being in a hectic business - and during COVID - these guys all had super helpful and positive attitudes. Jeff, whatever you're doing, please keep it up. Not the best at communication, although seems to have gotten friendlier over the past few years. Buyer beware, look at exactly what they are delivering, because they will not make it right in my experience. I ordered a pea gravel and the cashier asked if I wanted crushed or round, I decided on round but he neglected to tell me it was a different size than crushed which was what I originally said I wanted. In the past I ordered a lot of stone, some of which were steps... the ones on the bottom of the palette did not make my mason happy. Best of luck. read more

After 15 calls to SBI to get them to refund my cc for an order that I cancelled, I finally had to call AmEx to take care of the problem. My biggest issue is that they agreed early on to the refund, and they said that they had contacted AmEx, but they hadn't. Very bad customer service. Don't shop here. read more

I have been in the landscape business for over 30 years and have never experienced such a difunctional material supplier. After waiting a month for my material I was told by SBI that the material was at the manufacturer and had no date for a delivery. To satisfy my customer I drove myself 2 hours each way to pickup the material from the manufacturer. I will never use SBI again. So much for customer service. read more

If I could give zero stars I would, one star is overly generous. Never buy soil from this company! My husband and I purchased soil for a vegetable garden we were building and specifically told the man over the phone that we needed good potting soil for a garden. When our "soil" was dropped off it was entirely clay and gravel mixed together. It was as hard as concrete and we found a TON of garbage like pens, construction tape, rug fabrics, ect in the mixture. Giving them the benefit of the doubt we paid the full price but ordered another load of different soil from them. My husband went down to the yard to pick out the premium gardening soil and took a sample and asked them to deliver. When the truck dropped off the load the next day it was the same clay and gravel mixture as the first batch. By now we were out about $1,000.00 and still did not have what we asked for! Plus we had two giant truck loads of garbage soil that was useless that we had to move. After multiple calls to the manager they refused to give us any money or reimbursement for switching the soil we ordered and paid top dollar for and they left over garbage they dropped off with us. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND TIME AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. read more

If you find stone you like here, you must pay and deliver it immediately. They have a poor process of managing their inventory and especially pallets of stone on hold or sold. We found out the day before or scheduled delivery that they no longer had most of our stone. Even our contractor says this has happened to him several times in the past and he is a repeat customer of SBI. Weeks in advance, we wrote up a sales order and marked all of our pallets of flagstone. We gave SBI all of our contact information and even our credit card information. We gave them our installation date and even offered to pay in full, and the sales staff told us we did not need to pay in advance, because they did HOLDS all the time. We even watched them label each pallet the day we picked it out, and took photos of each tag and pallet. In hindsight I can see on these photos that they marked only half of the pallets as SOLD but all had our last name on them. We even called 2 weeks in advance about scheduling the actual delivery and still they didn't ask us to pay. When they called us the day before delivery to say they could not find our stone, we were shocked. Only when we insisted on coming down to look ourselves did their staff find a few of our pallets still there. However, they had actually changed one tag onto another pallet that clearly was not one of the ones we had taken a picture of the day we chose them...color didn't even match. Apparently HOLD has no meaning at SBI. Staff decides to give away your product without even trying to contact you with the information they have on the order. One of their yard staff laughed and thought it was funny that our stone was missing. Another said it happens when people pull other people tags off pallets so they can claim them for themselves....he even pulled off a tag to show us how easy it is to steal someone else's stone! Ultimately we asked the Owner Jeff if there was anything he could to to help us find stone since work was commencing that week and we were missing our stone. Jeff was not interested in helping us and actually sent us to competitor Wheeler Zamaroni in Santa Rosa. When we visited Wheeler Zamaroni, their sales yard of materials was much better organized, and they had a much better process of protecting customer's chosen purchases in a separate place and delivered perfectly. Wish we had started there instead! We hope that SBI will either improve their inventory management practices, or train their staff to tell customers they must purchase and deliver their chosen pallets. If you don't, you take the risk of losing the materials, even if they are marked with your name and they have your credit card information. read more
