The food arrive quickly yet the eggs were runny and the bacon had a non-bacon taste! I received only one slice of toast, and the home fries were so hard they were completely inedible. The pancakes were especially disappointing. One was about 3 inches in diameter and the other around 6 inches. They appeared to have been cooked on either a very dirty grill or frying pan as there were black soot/charcoal marks on them, but the worst part was the taste. The batter tasted as though it had been stored in the refrigerator alongside strong-smelling foods. The pancakes had an unpleasant combination of vegetable and meat flavors. To try and eat them I asked for butter and syrup (not offered). Still horrible I couldn't mask the flavor. My husband ordered eggs and hash. The portion of hash was extremely small--only about 2 inches in diameter and barely covering the plate. Between the long wait, poor service, and cold, disappointing food, the experience was made even worse by the disgusting flies that harassed us throughout the entire meal. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience. The food quality, service, and cleanliness were all unacceptable. I couldn't get out of there fast enough and unfortunately will not be returning.

Maybe we caught the kitchen on an off day, because the consistently high ratings made us expect much more. We specifically chose this place based on those reviews instead of going somewhere with a view and slightly lower ratings. In the end, we got neither the view nor particularly good food, which was disappointing. The kind staff and clam chowder were the bright spots, but based on our meal, I personally wouldn't rate the overall experience anywhere near 4.5 stars.

If I could give a zero stars on this review I would. Owners of Sawtelle's you MUST train your staff and supervisors/manager better and figure out a closing procedure! Walked in at 8:05pm and was immediately told I needed to order quickly as they were shutting off the grill in 6 minutes. Asked what time do you close and they said 8:30pm. Don't understand closing grill 15 minutes before you actually close, but not my call. The odd part, the counter helped disappeared for 5 minutes while we waited to order. When she finally did come back to take our order, she had to speak to her supervisor if it was ok to order grilled chicken for our salads. While we waited for our food literally 4-5 guests came in to order and were told the grill and fryer were closed and couldn't order and were turned away. Is this a way to run a business? Wouldn't you want those last few orders to help your bottom line? You are paying staff to be there until 8:30pm. Why not say you close at 8pm and have staff clean and close grill and leave at 8:30pm? I mean it's 8pm in summer months and people eat later, the sun is still out. Why wouldn't you stay open to serve your guests? Plus, if you are open until 8:30pm, shouldn't you take orders until 8:30pm? Don't get it, but hey it's not my business and I am not running it. Our order was dropped on the counter, no one told us it was ready or it if was in fact ours. While waiting to ask the counter help, if the order was mine, she was on the phone telling a customer "sorry you can't order a sub we closed the sub station." What?! Now the grill and fry stations I can kind of understand shutting down early (don't agree shutting down grill early but can understand), but the sandwich making station? Just moved down to Kingston from the North Shore. I was looking for a good go to pizza joint, and have tried a few already. Went to Sawtelles today, in fact just got finished with my food. What a disgrace of a pizza place this is. The person i was with and I ordered 2 cold cut subs from a girl that looked and acted like we were bothering her, almost zombie like. She slouched up to the counter and i ordered an Italian sub with onion rings. My friend asked for an American sub, the girl said "we dont do american subs" lol....what kind of pizza place cant do an american sub ffs? anyways, she ordered a cheese mustard and pickle sub.I know I know its not much but this comes into play as we wait for this food to come. I sat for at least 20min while my friend left to play some scratch tickets from the store adjacent. We were so angry that we were still waiting on 2 cold cuts subs lol. The poor guy in front of us ordered a Ham and Cheese and he must have been there 10-15 min. This was all at 2pm on a Thursday so they were not busy. Anyhow, now to the food... I also had their chili that I forgot to mention, along with the italian sub. The chili was great to my surprise but the Italian was nasty...not a proper Italian at all, no oil, no vinegar, no capicola. Very disappointing to say the least comparing this to places on the North Shore this place blows TBH. But to get service like that puts a def stamp that I will never return to Sawtelles and hope to find a good place down here for a Pie. read more
