Great helpful staff at this small and unique woman owned business. I was fascinated by all the spice options that I didn't know I needed until I saw them all on display! The staff encourages sniffing and tasting the spices with their sample containers and even told me to throw the remainder from my hand to the floor. That's always fun! I ended up buying three spices here including Franklin Five Points Spice, Smoky Mountain Sprinkle, and Nashville Hot Fried Chicken Seasoning. I'd been ordering their Cambodian lemongrass curry blend for a few years so was very excited to come upon their physical shop in Franklin. This spice store is absolutely lovely and you could spend forever in here, perusing the offerings. I appreciate that they have containers out for you to sniff the spices. Staff was friendly. Savory Spice Shop has a lot of interesting seasoning blends, which is great. I picked up more Cambodian curry, along with a whiskey-barrel smoked black pepper, which I had been searching for. If you want the world's best spice shop, shop here! I love to cook and am a bit of a spice connoisseur, and since discovering this place... I only buy from them. In person experience: the friendliest staff. Adorable shop on Main Street right in downtown Franklin. They explain to you when you walk in how it works in case you haven't been before. They have all the spices out for you to pour in your hand and try. When you're done - flip your hand and dump it on the floor. They are constantly sweeping it up so it's still clean, but goodness that makes the shop smell heavenly! Now, with COVID rules, maybe that is not happening at the moment, but that is the general feel of the store. Online experience: amid all the COVID and shops closed, I was a) running out of many spices and b) wanting to support one of my favorite small local businesses, so I placed an online order. The easiest thing ever. I ordered around 3pm on a weekday, and I'm not lying when I tell you I received my spices the NEXT DAY. I was so surprised, and delighted to try some new stuff. All their spices are fresh, have great flavor and are packaged with love and care. It's awesome they sell different sizes and refillable bags for the jars you already have. Spices all must try: four cheese sprinkle (the best on popcorn). Dill (I've never had such fresh dill before unless it was actually fresh dill cut off the plant). White vinegar powder (I use to make homemade salt + vinegar chips). Supreme shallot salt. Never ever stop making. It is my hands down favorite thing you sell. With a family that's been in the restaurant business for 70 years, I know there are two major components - in the eye of the public - to running any business; have a good product and maintain excellent customer service. Although Savory Spice has a phenomenal assortment of spices, their customer service has taken a major hit since I last visited and I cannot figure out why. I stood around for 15 minutes waiting to be helped with three employees present and only one of them briefly preoccupied by a customer. And here I was about to drop $200 on spices. I was never asked what I was a looking for and I was completely ignored as if I were invisible (difficult for a 6-foot-tall man). Finally, someone noticed that I was literally standing and staring at the employees hoping to be helped, but not wanting to disturb their work. I always order the largest jars of spices because of the amount of cooking that I do. But because of the glass shortage they're currently out of that size. That isn't their fault, it's just frustrating. I wish there had been a sign regarding the unavailability, but I'll let it slide. Because I'm such a frequent customer, I have a loyalty account. At the checkout counter, the employee didn't even ask me for my number even though that's store policy. I guess they figured this random guy who's buying a bunch of spices couldn't possibly be a loyalty member, much less a chef. Really? That was a little demeaning. I ended up giving them my number anyway, and they said "they'd put it in later." Yeah, sure! I'll bet they're eager to put that in after I leave the store. Some of these are just minor infractions in customer service. But it was just the overall vibe that was awkward, like I didn't matter, this weird feeling that I didn't belong there without them realizing I've been a loyal customer for a decade. It was eerie and unwelcoming. Business 101: even when you have a mediocre product, you'd better make people feel extremely welcome in your store! Savory Spice has an incredible product, but just horrible customer service! It was so unsettling the way they acted around me that I don't ever want to go back there again. And that's saying something after being a customer for so long, and being a chef who heavily relies on their spices. I'm going to be ordering my spices on the Internet from now on. Last week I made my second trip to Savory Spice Shop. I found this gem last year when I was visiting my brother. So I made sure to go there again this year. Every spice they carry has an option to taste the spice. Last year I was sorry I didn't buy the Truffle Salt. It's pricy but you absolutely get what you pay for in this store. The quality and taste are a 10 out of 10 for me. So, I splurged. I also picked up a bottle of lime salt for my brother. Also amazing taste. Due to covid they pour a rather large sample in your hand to smell or taste. After you throw it on the floor. This adds to the wonderful aroma of the store, and it is not messy. A couple folks in our group were really excited to check out this spice shop, so we all went along inside. It did indeed smell amazing. You can buy different amounts, of your choice, of the flavored salts, rubs, dip mixes, and various other spices. Each offering has a small sprinkle bottle next to it for smell and taste tests. The truffle sea salt...is to die for! (as is the cost of it...it gutted me to have to leave without buying some, but it wasn't in my budget for the trip....) This place is great and I wish there was one in my hometown....but, it looks like you can order online. So...my budget may remain in jeopardy! But my food will be heckin' tasty! read more

This place is.... not my cup of tea. Honestly, if it hadn't been for my mother, it would not have even crossed my mind to stop in to this store, let alone spend the next 30 minutes of my life there. But, y'all... do it. It doesn't matter if you're an amateur cook, a full fledged chef, or just looking for something fun for the kitchen or your bar, there is a little something here for everyone. My mother, who is far more on the full fledged chef side of life, stocked up for the better part of the next millenia while she was there. She just oohed and ahhed over every little corner of the store and there was something new in every display that made her happy. I even found a great UGA pasta salad mix for myself, and a way to make some apple pie moonshine. One of my guilty pleasures is collecting spices. As a professional cook by trade having access to a variety of spices is critical to creating everything from classic dishes to new and exotic flavors. My first experience with Savory was in Denver Colorado. When we moved to Nashville I was very pleased to find a store within a manageable drive. My wife works in Franklin and loves to walk around downtown, so it gives me an excuse to come feed my spice addiction. Savory spice shop has a surprisingly good collection of spices to choose from. Their spices are fresh and of the best quality. For the most part I make my own spice blends. Staples like creole and file blends are recipes my family has handed down for generations. That being said even I have found blends at Savory I enjoy more than my own ( love their medium curry powder). This weekend while visiting Franklin we stopped by to see if they carried Ground Sumac Berries, a spice that I have found difficult to procure. Not only did they have it, the Sumac they had was very fresh (unlike the spices you get in tins at your local grocery). While we were there I decided to give their saffron a look to see if the quality was up to par. The saffron was far above average, a deep color with no yellow pieces that you usually find in less desirable saffron. When compared to my own it was obvious by smell, appearance and flavor that their product was superior. The staff at Savory Spice shop in Franklin is helpful and quite knowledgeable. Prior to Savory Spice Shop, I bought from another boutique spice company in CA, but was only able to order online because their stores were too far from me. Preferring an in house experience when purchasing spices (smelling, tasting, the simple act of perusing and being able to ask questions), I decided to transition to Savory because their store was close to me at the time. After we moved, I was elated that this shop was in my neighborhood. I was in dire need of a spice cabinet refill and popped on in. I was immediately attended to by Drew, and he was so patient while we went down the list of the 8-10 spices I needed...all different sizes, some refills, some new jars. This is serious business! This is such a cute little shop! It's located in the heart of downtown Franklin on the main strip. You walk in and are surrounded by literally hundreds of different spices. But they do a really good job of organizing them. So you have your normal spices and then 100 variations of the normal spics (might be a bit of an exaggeration!). But seriously, they have like 15 different types of sea salt. But what I really love is that they have an area that separates spices by countries. So if you're looking for a good Indian curry spice, you'll find it there! They also have all the yummy thai curry spices! And then in another little section they have all different types of meat rubs. I'm always worried about spices having MSG in them, but I asked them and they don't have any MSG in them. The prices are done by the ounces, and you can get a small amount or a ton. Overall great little spot to try a bunch of different things for a reasonable price! read more

The first time I tried to visit Savory was during the first festival after they open. That was a big fail. It's definitely packed during a summer street festivals with folks trying to escape the heat and the crowds. I was a little disappointed, but they can't cater their store for bi-monthly festivals. This most recent trip was a Saturday afternoon, and I got to experience the store as it was meant to be experienced. If your a baker, cook, or grillmaster, this is the place to go. The store smells amazing, which can be attributed both to the products and the tasting. All the products have a tester. They welcome you to sniff and taste all the products. To taste, you shake a bit on your hand, taste it, and toss the leftover on the floor. If you find something you like, you can buy as little as an ounce. As far as price goes, I found it to be pretty comparable to the "good" stuff you find at the store (not talking the Dollar General $1 garlic powder). And considering you only have to buy what you need, you end up saving some cash. My husband and I didn't go into Savory intending to buy anything, but we left with three grill rubs. I'm not a frequent baker, but the store has me inspired. It's so close to my house that I can pop over there for whatever I need whenever I need it. They also have assortment packs that would make for excellent gifts. When I see a very specialized store like this, I worry that it will not succeed, but based on my awesome experience and the foot traffic they had while I was there, I'm hoping that won't be the case. While I completely appreciate what the store has to offer, Every time I'm in the store I find the service fair. I asked for dried mint and the answer I was given was nothing but condescending. But trust me, I will never again make the mistake of not saying "spearmint" first. Interestingly when I exited the store I said to my companion that was waiting outside for me, "I feel like the lady in there is never very nice...". Her response was an enthusiastic "I feel the same way!". Again, great products and selections. Wow! All kinds of spices as I didn't realize paprika had so many different flavors. It was a nice place to walk around as the prices are a little high for me to buy and take home. If I lived in the area or needed a specific spice then this would be my place. My daughter enjoyed smelling the spices here and the saleslady was very friendly to her. Excellent place! I love doing strange things in the kitchen and it's just the place to aid me. Spent about 55 bucks on spices varying from extra hot oriental mustard powder to raritan river herb. Real cool assistant manager named Kris helped me throughout the process of sampling and recommendations. There's just something so fulfilling about dumping a little in your palm, tasting it, and then tossing the excess on the floor. Great selection of curries, paprikas, peppercorns, oriental stuff, peppers, blah blah. Some real neat locally sourced stuff(I bought some peach habanero jam, which was scary good). There's multiple regions and multiple varieties. The chain also has a website with all their spices but it isn't as fun as the store where you can smell and taste the spices. Used to Love This Place! I have to say that this place was one of the reasons I would drive over an hour to visit Franklin, TN. I would go a couple times a year to load up on spices, spending several hundred dollars each time. Recently, I was blessed to find a solution for my anxiety that kept me from shopping as much as I would like to - a wonderful 3-pound service dog. Since this is a company based in Denver - the dog loving capital of the world - I didn't think it would be a problem. Boy was I wrong! I was told in no uncertain terms that NO dogs were allowed, not even service dogs. While I understand that a comfort dog isn't protected under current laws, it blew me away that they'd take offense at a small dog in my arms that would let me go about my purchase. Needless to say, since my husband had to remain outside with the dog, and I got frustrated too quickly, I didn't get to buy what I wanted. Their response was to shop online. They cared more about getting my money than making me comfortable. Guess I'll need to find a new spice shop. A real shame because I truly love everything else about this store. read more

We were visiting Nashville Tn and took a side trip to Franklin, TN. There we found the Savory Spice Shop. As I love to cook I could not resist going into it. It was very well stocked and more importantly the staff was very knowledgeable and very helpful. They carried a wide selection of herbs spices and seasonings. Needless to say I bought a number of them and am looking forward to using them when I BBQ and sautéing. One of the spices was left out of the bag and to my surprise they mailed it to me along with one of two others at no cost. This is what I call exceptional customer service.
