Rude waitress.. wasn't anyone else there when we arrived on a weekday yet she still made it seem like not having reservations would be a problem. She was very passive aggressive with her approach not to me but to another person in our group. It Could possibly be because she was the only female in our group. My food was good had the legume with black rice decent portion but definitely not worth it for the price. The black rice was 15 dollars and separate from my order which was ridiculous. 2 out of 4 enjoyed their food. The ones that didn't complained about the fried chicken being bland like it was boiled then fried to quicken the process. The other person in our group complained about the salmon not even tasting like it was actual salmon and wasn't seasoned well also. I wanted to give this place a try upon noticing it online but man did I make a mistake !!!! I made a reservation through open table for 2 which was for myself and my partner. Our reservation was for 5 p.m. and once we arrived we were seated immediately which is why I gave the 2 stars!!! From that point on was horrible. For one I am haitian and I know my food like the back of my hand. I requested drinks of lemonade and it tasted horrible. Haitian lemonade is made straight from lemons and in the cup you will see some pulp. In the lemonade there is some essence flavoring and little vanilla added for flavor. I know the taste of real lemons and when its from instant/ powdered!!!! The lemonade was not 100% pure lemonade. Secondly I wanted to order appetizers for the both of us to eat and was told I had to not only order appetizers but a full entree as well!!! So we decided not to order any appetizers and go straight for the entrée. We only wanted one entrée because we could share it but then I was told that we had to order 2 since I made a reservation for 2 people!!! The owner then proceeds to tell me that since I made a reservation for 2 I HAD to order 2 meals. I asked him should I have made a reservation for one and just bring extra company!!!! Who does that?!!!! I have been to other restaurants and made a reservation for 2 but only ordered for one or got more than one appetizer and shared everything. So by now we were like pissed because we felt like we were being pressured or forced into doing something we didn't want to!!! We really wanted to sit outdoors and enjoy a small meal while relaxing. So we ordered our entrées and first comes out a soup called bouillon which when it came out we were highly disappointed . Haitian bouillon is not made with canned tomato soup!!! I tasted it immediately!!! The dough ball in the soup is suppose to have some seasoning and not mushy. It should be firm and well seasoned!!! There was no Haitian seasoning, acidity, spiciness and just very bland!!! This was a disgrace to Haitian cuisine because I know what my food is SUPPOSE to taste like!!!! This owner is ripping these people off of their money because that was not Haitian cuisine!!!! Lastly that came out was the fried pork, black rice and plaintains. I was completely done by then because the fried pork was very disappointing and poorly made!!! I'm not sure if you guys hired a Haitian chef or another race and poorly showed him/her how to cook the food but what your serving isn't Haitian cuisine!!!! The portions are very small for the amount of food that comes out with the price that it attached so at least I was expecting the taste of the food to make up for that but I was HIGHLY disappointed!!!! We dined yesterday evening with 2 friends for my Wife's birthday an we are still talking about the food and experience today. I have dined at many great restaurants and the things that first attract me is friendliness, simplicity and a peaceful décor. Saveur Creole had all 3 and the owner is very welcoming and engaging. The service was calm, friendly and efficient. The food is just delicious and elevated. The ingredients were fresh and well put together in a very original presentation. We had the Bouillion Creole and the Haitian Caviar as appetizers. For the entrée, the Conch Creole was out of this world, tender and tasty with maduros (sweet plantains) but the vegetables could have been served warmer. The Griot Mi Casa and Tassot de Chevre were delicious with tostones (green plantains). It was the first time I tasted the Black Mushroom rice made with Jasmine Rice and it was delicious. Went here a year ago, and again quite recently. Walked in, and the owner greeted us. Really genial personality. Checked up on us a couple times but was not overbearing. When they say that something is spicy, they're not joking. If you like spicy food, it's nothing crazy...but someone in our group overestimated their own penchant for heat and was unpleasantly surprised to find out that their dish was spicier than originally thought (totally the customer's fault there). Everything I had there was tomato-based, spicier sauce...really great. Dinner comes with soup and salad, if I remember correctly--both of which were great. Nothing to complain about. Ambiance is quaint. Nothing too offensive or impressive. The tight quarters yields an intimate experience for you and your date, but also allows you to easily eavesdrop on conversations whispered across the cozy space. Try it out. My group of friends and I dined at this establishment at the urging of another friend, as she is Haitian and wanted us to experience the food. Needless to say...I was not impressed. First off the restaurant space was nice, but extremely small and felt like we were squished together. Service was ok, but nothing spectacular. As for the food...it was extremely over priced for the amount of food we got. I literally left still hungry and slightly annoyed. Now on to the food. To start, I had a small side salad...Bayou Salad which was too small for $10.00. That was ok and fresh, however I did not taste the vinaigrette what's so ever. Then had the Bouillon Créole soup and although the flavor was there, I literally only had broth and that was it. I had disintegrated spinach, carrots, collard greens and no dumplings as advertised on the menu. I literally had one potato in my soup. I felt like we were given the left over soup at the bottom of the pan for $10.00. For my entree I had the the Punda Shrimp which was delicious, but portion wise was extremely small for $32.00. All of the girls agreed they enjoyed the flavors of their meals, however they were still hungry as well. This. Place. Is. The. Shit. Had a Haitians Gone Wild night over here with my Haitian Yelp bros Yves V and Stanley L, and MAN was it fantastic. When trying to introduce "foodie" friends to the food I grew up with, it usually consists of taking them to a hole-in-the-wall take out place. What's more difficult is finding a nice sit down restaurant, and Saveur Creole fits that bill perfectly. Located somewhat off the beaten path in Montclair, it can be a bit of a hassle to find... but definitely worth it. It's BYOB and conveniently situated right next to a liquor store, with an OK wine selection. From the moment you step inside, you immediately feel like you're being welcomed into someones home. The staff is very warm and the intimate setting is perfect for date night. My one gripe would have to be that you have to walk through the kitchen to get to the bathroom. WTF, who designed this place?!? Other than that, I love the Haitian artwork displayed on the walls and the whole vibe is just very authentic. While the prices are a little steep for this kind of food, I definitely think the quality and atmosphere more than makes it worth it. THIS FOOD. THIS FOOD RIGHT HERE. This is some of the best Haitian food I've ever tasted... dare I say better than moms (SORRY MOM). If someone was coming here for the first time, I'd recommend they start with the sampler. That consists of tostones topped with smoked fish and goat cheese, a meat patty, a vegetarian fritter, and pikliz (Haitian cole slaw). For the soup, you can never go wrong with the bouillon. For the main event you have to get the griot, which is pretty much the national dish of Haiti (a fried pork dish). They make it so tender and juicy here, it's a must try. We went to Saveur Creole based on the great reviews I have read from Yelp and we weren't disappointed. Walking in, it felt like we were in a restaurant in the Carribean. The place is small but it is decorated with bright colors and magical paintings of the beach. We felt good. It's a BYOB. There's a liquor store next door with a fine selection and resonable prices. That worked as well. The waitress brought over our menu's and and said if we have any questions regarding the menu, please ask. We started with the Saveur Creole Sampler which consisted of your choice of two empanadas, Marinades, and Haitian Caviar. The Haitian Caviar is a smoked fish spread over crispy tostones and topped with a dollop of goat chese and the marinades were deep fried vegitarian fritters. We picked the beef and crab empanadas. It was served with a dish of very spicy cabbage/ slaw. The entire selection was very delicious. Watch out for the slaw, it was very spicy but also went well with the food that was served. The main meals come with a homemade soup and a salad. The soup we had was a vegetarian soup that was to die for. Extremely good. And the salad was a garden salad with a fruity vinegarette. We ordered a salmon and shrimp dish in a red creole sauce as well as a filet of Atlantic Sea Bass. Both dishes came with a vegetable and sweet plantains. You had your choice of white rice, black rice, rice and beans or a mac n' cheese as a side. We picked the black rice which was very good. The rice was flavored with some herbs and spices and was very tasty. Both dishes were cooked perfectly. We didn't need it but we ordered the creme brulee'. The dessert took a while to come out. I thought it was strange that it was taking so long but we were patiently waiting. The dessert finally arrived and it was very hot. I must admit that I have never had a creme brulee that was hot out of the oven. Bottomline, the chef made it from scratch and it was very good. I would recommend a couple of fixes. The first was no bread was offered. If I go to a better restaurant, bread is usually offered. None this time. Also, it was a very warm evening and the place didn't seem to have air conditioning. By the time we left, we were very warm. We also asked for coffee (don't know why since it was so warm) but we were told "I don't know if we have coffee". Entrees came with salad (with homemade dressing) and soup/chicken gumbo. A wonderful surprise. I wasn't aware this area of Montclair existed. If you get their early enough you don't have to worry about finding parking. Saveur Creole was not very busy when we arrived but we made reservations anyway. Apps - Savory Empanada (4) Lamb (not a lamb fan so I cannot comment), Chicken (good - minced chicken that was seasoned), Beef (good - ground beef with a bit of seasoning) and spinach (good - had some cheese as well). The empanada dough was very good. Not over cooked or crunchy. Soup - we tried the Bouillon Creole (very good - with two dumplings) and the soupe de giraumon (similar to an Italian minestone soup). Salad - their house vinaigrette was unique. Worth a try. Entree - Trini Chicken (sauteed in a coconut curry sauce). Very good. Had a little Indian flare to it. Afrikana Beef (beef stew but the beef was tough and over cooked. Also a little too salty). We both had the black rice with mushrooms but I wasn't a fan. Opt for the rice and beans. We had SUCH a delicious meal here that I really want to give this place 5 stars. But the service we had dropped it down to a 4. This might get slightly wordy.... We had a Restaurant.com certificate to use but I had been here before and knew the food was good. Was excited to bring my friends here who hadn't been before. After being seated, the owner came by right away to introduce himself and say hello. He answered any questions we had and gave us some suggestions. Very friendly guy and you could tell he honestly loved what he did. The waitress came over and we placed our order. We asked for the Vegetarian Sampler plus an extra beef empanada. When it came out, we asked the waitress what each item in the sampler was and she honestly couldn't tell us. She kept on saying that the eggplant legume was the Haitian Caviar, which contains seafood. After questioning it a few times, she finally said it was the eggplant. And we were missing the extra empanada. That was corrected quickly though. The sampler itself was amazing. Everything was cooked perfectly. The empanadas weren't greasy at all and the flavors were great. All the entrees come with soup and salad so we ordered the boulioun creole and broccoli cheddar soup. Boullion creole was the winner of the two, with tons of veggies and flavor. We all had the house salad and the dressing was light and delicious. Plus it had goat cheese...always brownie points in my book. For entrees I had the chicken etouffe and it was, like everything else, delicious. Slight kick to it and great flavor. The sweet plantains that came with it helped tame the spice. My friends also loved their meals but I honestly can't remember what they had. Some shrimp dish and also a vegetarian dish. We were so full after the meals but just had to get dessert since we loved everything else. We had the batata pudding, which was almost the consistency of a bread pudding and the mango empanada. The batata pudding was my favorite by far. The owner came by a few times to make sure that everything was going well, always a nice touch. The rest of the service though? Ugh. Other than our issue with the appetizer, we kept getting shuffled between two waitresses and they NEVER talked to each other to tell each other what was going on. Plus neither of them knew any of the ingredients in any of the dishes we asked about. When the bill came out, we gave one of them the restaurant.com coupon. The other one didn't know about it and didn't understand that we were waiting for an adjusted bill. When the bill came back, it was only a few dollars less than originally. We realized she added in gratuity on top of the discount, which we understood. But then when she ran the cards, she included the tip in the 'main' part of the credit card charge. Very confusing. She never told us tip was included already so we're assuming she wanted us to tip her again. Nope, didn't happen. Only other quibble? The deserts were $10 each, EACH! Our entrees were only a few dollars more than that. And funny that the prices weren't on the dessert menu. Walked in to an empty restaurant without a reservation on a Saturday night. Mostly all tables said reserved, but they found a cozy table in the back for us anyhow. I was definitely a little skeptical at first but was pleasantly surprised. The service was very attentive. One of the employees kept coming over to refill out wine and check on us. Sigh. This restaurant deserves a mixed review because the "hospitality" was less than pleasant. In fact, we were more or less pushed into the restaurant, rushed through our meal, and asked to leave so that another table could be seated. The bouillon soup and conch chowder were fan favorites, and the salad was simple and perfect. My crab etouffee was heavenly. I'm a spice lover, so it was right up my alley. Unfortunately, we did not have time for dessert, as we were asked to leave around 8:25, so the 8:30 reservation could sit down. Seems like poor planning on the restaurant's part. You should never ask guests to leave. SC is a BYOB, and their servers refill your wine for you. They are extremely attentive in this regard. Your wine glass will never see the bottom (unless you finish your bottle of course). ONLY problem is, they messed up, and started pouring me another table's Malbec. If you want to class things up, make sure you keep is classy. The Owner is very friendly and he will greet your table to make sure you are enjoying your meal. ONE last thing that is kind of absurd...you have to walk through the kitchen to get to the bathroom. This seems like a health violation. Just saying... As a Haitian-American, I was skeptical because my mom cooks thee best food in the world, but my sister convinced my family to go for my dad's birthday. Amazing. My parents are America's biggest critics of commercialized Haitian food but they LOVED IT!!! Food: Absolutely delicious. All of their meet is cooked to perfection but still tender and savory. Each of us ordered a different plate and we were all thoroughly satisfied with the food. Their griot (fried pork) is hands down the best I've ever had. Ever. The appetizer "Belle Capoise" is griot with fried plantains. It's amazing. It's served with flavory sauce that will rock your mind. I had the legumes and rice. Absolutely delicious. Not sure if their food is good because I didn't get to try it. We made a reservation to celebrate our anniversary for a Friday, but called a day or two before to reschedule it to Saturday. My partner said the guy on the phone sounded distracted when he called to reschedule. We show up on Saturday, and stand around for 5 minutes like a couple of idiots, while the staff walks around us but no one acknowledges us. Finally dude comes up and asks for the name on the reservation. He goes to the back, comes out a couple minutes later with his appointment book saying he doesn't see a reservation in our name. Had a chance to pass through Montclair, saw a chance to try creole. We don't eat a lot, so my wife just ordered a salad , and I ordered the saveur creole goat, which came with soup and salad. Chicken gumbo was good, if not remarkable. The salad had a dressing whose flavor tasted like a light soy to me. I was informed that it was roibo, an African spice. It was light and refreshing. The goat dish was hearty and spicy. To be honest, it was more spicy than I expected, but it's fun to get a good burn every once in a while. Dessert choices that day were sweet potato pudding, bread pudding, and creme brûlée. We decided to try the sweet potato pudding. Never had it before, can't say I loved it, but it wasn't bad. When the bill came, I was surprised that the dessert was $15! It was my fault that I didn't ask to see the prices on the dessert menu, but I must say I didn't think that was a $15 dessert. The atmosphere and service was very good. Its an intimate and color establishment and service was attentive. The food is very very good. I had the legume (spinach) and he had the griot (fried pork). The serving size for my legume was great and it tasted awesome. They gave me a mini pot! His serving size of the griot was not a enough at all, especially for dude. We went here for an anniversary dinner this evening, so keep in mind we were already in a happy-go-lucky mood, but this place is AMAZING! I was also a bit skeptical when only one other table was occupied at 7pm, but it's a little bit off of the "Montclair Strip," so I think that is literally the only reason - it's an undiscovered gem! We ordered 4 empanadas (beef, pork, eggplant, and peach). Beef was my favorite but they were all delicious...and nicely cut in half so we could each try each one. Save peach for dessert. It was out of this world yummy (keep in mind, I like sweet), and I actually enjoyed having it in the order we did, but it would be a fantastic dessert too. For entrees, my hubby had "Griot Mi Casa" (pork). It actually didn't arrive shredded, but it didn't matter, the flavor was fantastic! I had the "Mais Gratine" (polenta, eggplant, black bean dish) and wish my stomach was bigger to keep going because it was so yummy. Both dishes came with soup and salad (GREAT deal!). I had the Bouillon Creole and he had a Mambo Chicken special...both were delicious...and the salads were the Bayou Salad. Go. Try it. You won't be upset! We did have a few miscommunications with the waitress, but she was so sweet and meant well, I think it was just a bit of a language barrier (especially since my husband has a British accent which always seems to through people off). My best advice for anyone planning to go to Saveur Creole is this: you should live in the immediate area, or have a large bladder. Because you do not want to have to use the bathroom. My trip through the open kitchen to the tiny bathroom next to an open door leading to the rear municipal parking lot was bad. Really bad. Patrons were entering the restaurant through the back, with salads plated on tables as they walked past. And the employee that came out of the bathroom before me needs to learn to flush the toilet when she's done. I have never stopped going to a restaurant because of Board of Health issues, until now. I want to be Cleopatra, the Queen of Denial, and not know what's going on in the kitchen. But I won't be back. And it's a real shame, because the food was absolutely delicious. read more

I rarely give out five stars, i'm picky! But the food here was soooo amazing I feel as if that alone would warrant 5 stars. However this place is getting 4 stars for the following reasons: The wait service started out poorly; although the place WAS NOT crowded it took a few minutes for our waiter to get to our table. Eventually our waitress caught her bearings and service turned out to be pretty good. The owner also came out and greeted us and made suggestions --- that was a nice touch as well. But you know what they say about first impressions! The ambiance also needed some work; The wall paper was peeling off and the music was way too loud at moments. Anyhow, I strongly urge you to look past all the minor negatives and try this place, you mouth and belly will thank you graciously! read more

Not sure what everyone is talking about ..... Had dinner there with two other couples every dish look the same and was fairly non descript and didn't taste all that different. Then if you have to use the rest room you have to walk straight threw the kitchen in the middle of service on slippery floors next to flat tops sauté pans and a working kitchen. Didn't even think that was allowed. Maybe I'm missing something here I love food, love cooking, love trying new things this place was forgetful at best. read more

I reviewed this place once before. I went shortly after it opened and was not thrilled, but I decided to give them another try. I can say nothing about the taste of the food. I never got that far. I walked in and was shown to a table. I looked at the water glass which had lipstick marks on it and ask for another. Then I noticed EVERYTHING was filthy. - dark smudges on the plates - fingerprints on the flatware - stains on the table cloths There was even smears of grease on the walls and dust bunnies on the floor like tumbleweed. Probably the worst $150 I ever spent and ruined my Valentine's date night. My husband and I are vegetarian and no where on the site it was mentioned they had pre-fix Valentine's Day menu. Moreover, when I made reservations, the owner didn't mention it either. The hosts seemed all confused and took our dishes back and forth couple of times because I asked " are you sure this is vegetarian?" Food: 3 stars Ambience: 2 stars (very congested) Service: 1 star The money is definitely not worth the overall package. This restaurant is fantastic. I tried this for the first time about a month ago for my girlfriends birthday and we had a great dinner. Its rare to see a restaurant with so many great reviews, so we were excited to go here. The waitstaff was very attentive and helpful. Our waitress explained a lot of the menu items since it was our first time and she made some recommendations. They were out of 1 or 2 things we wanted to try, but it was late on a saturday night but thats okay. We tried 4 or 5 different empandadas and they were all delicious with the crab being our favorite. The Montego Bay Beef was very very good. The food is real and authentic creole. This is a great change from all the italian and american style restaurants in the area. Its also nice that is a BYOB. Had dinner @ Saveur Creole last night and our party was completely underwhelmed. The service was slow, eg, our appetizer came out after the entrees. I had the red snapper @ MP- way overpriced at $70 and it was so salty and overcooked, basically inedible. To add insult to injury, the restaurant had a mandatory 22% gratuity added to the check! My friends and I wanted to have Caribbean food and found this place on yelp and decided to check it out. It was well worth the 30 minute drive. The place is small and cozy and perfect for dates or groups of 4 or 6. The waitress was very welcoming and friendly, if not a little over zealous. We took beer and sparkling wine with us. The maitre d' offered to keep it chilled and whisked it inside. She was very attentive and kept our glasses filled all the time. We did not have any appetizers and went straight for the entrees. We ordered 4 dishes, one of chicken, goat, salmon and crab. The presentation of the food was excellent - everything was served with a plantain leaf. The fried goat was excellent with a spicy gravy. My husband loved the chicken étouffée, which had a smoky flavor to it with the right amount of spice. Overall, a great place with great food, relaxing caribbean ambience and amazing service. A rare find in these days of fast food, fast service and zero relaxation. We are looking to going back very soon. read more

We went here for Valentines Day. The food was amazing but was too small/tight. The waitresses seemed a bit overwhelmed bc it was so jam packed & they didnt seem like they were used to that but guess they get a pass bc it was V Day. I would like to preface this review with the fact that I've never actually eaten here. Although I have heard great things about this place- especially about their dessert, I'm giving 1 star as it's relative to my experience with the restaurant. It is possible in the future I would return and attempt to eat here again in the hopes that our recent encounter made them reconsider how they treat their customers, and if that is so, I will gladly edit my review... That being said, I went here for dinner earlier this week with my boyfriend and a bottle of wine. I called ahead to make a reservation for 7:30 and the woman on the phone said we needed one but did not even ask for my name before she hung up on me. We arrived at the restaurant at the time of the reservation and were ungreeted for about a minute. I observed about 12 tables in the whole place and the only other customers in the restaurant was a table of about 7 men, finished with their meal, talking quite loudly. A woman came out from the kitchen, barely said hello, took my bottle of wine, led us to a table meant for two people (instead of giving us an option in a near empty restaurant), and then left to the kitchen with the wine, which I thought was strange. My other half and I always order a lot of menu items (especially at new places) and share them, so I knew we would need more table space than a two top. So, thinking they wouldn't mind (considering there was nobody in the place and it was 7:45 pm), we moved to a table meant for 4, a little further away from the party of 7. The woman came out of the back, without our bottle of wine, told us "this table is meant for 4 people" and implied that she wanted us to return to the smaller table. I explained that we were planning on ordering enough food that would take up both tables, the smaller table would not have been big enough. She persisted and repeated: "this table is meant for 4 people". So naturally feeling strange, I asked if she really minds that we stay at the bigger table and she said "yes". So, we reluctantly returned to the table for two but before we sat down we both felt that there were enough restaurants in our native town of Montclair to choose from that would treat us with more respect, so we decided to leave. I asked the woman if I could have my bottle of wine back and she told me that she had already opened it in the back... Why she would open our bottle of wine anywhere except at our table in front of us is beyond me but I consider it very unprofessional. I am extremely disappointed in my experience with Saveur Creole as I was looking forward to trying their unique cuisine. Unfortunately, after looking through some of their other reviews, poor customer service seems to be a common trend. In a town with so many different and competitive restaurants, poor customer service and too many bad Yelp reviews are enough to get anyone to shut their doors for good. read more
