Lots of nice hiking trails to get in some amazing views of the countryside. We came to Switzerland for a family reunion in Horgen where we'd made arrangements with an AirBNB. Those plans fell through, so we ended up here... a little bit away from the reunion, but not terrible. The hotel is right on the main street so it's easy to get to. The staff is friendly and spoke English well, although I was constantly trying to improve my Swiss German. The rooms are need and clean... if a bit small. Breakfast was included with our stay and it was really quite good. Nice selection of breads, fruit, yogurts, soft boiled eggs and nice cheeses and sliced coldcuts. They had an excellent coffee machine too. Swiss coffee has to be the best I've ever had. Made me buy a Nespresso machine last time I was here. There is no A/C, which didn't matter as the nights we were there, the air was cool and crisp, however, there is an elevator and free wifi.

They even had cards to hand out with the wifi password on it since we were all a bunch of teenagers haha. Not the mention the wifi was free!! We had an amazing view of the streets too and being next to the monastery was just incredible. 10/10 would recommend. This hotel is amazing and completely underrated!

I was planning a fairly cheap weekend of snowboarding, but all the Brunni and Einsiedeln ski dorms were full for the weekend, so I grabbed a one-person room at the Sonne. The room was tiny, the TV was tiny, the in-room bathroom was tiny (no door, just a Wild West-style swinging divider)... but it was all clean, and cheap, and quiet, and smoke-free. Breakfast was quite pleasant; 5-minute eggs, Bircher Müsli very heavy on the nuts, bread, jam, and cheese. The server did turn on the radio to static and leave the room without noticing, but they were happy to shut off the white noise when I pointed it out. The ground-floor pizzeria was closed for remodeling (new pizza oven) when I visited, can't comment on that. The WLAN is free, but I never managed to get my Android phone to connect to it properly. I've had similar issues in other hotels, so I suspect an issue with a particular brand of access point, rather than something broken at the Sonne.

There is a dance floor at the bottom level that is really fun. They also have a pool but it is not included in your stay. You have to pay. We got dressed to go swimming and we were about to pay with euros when the lady said they only accept Swiss francs. We didn't have any since we just barely got to Switzerland. We asked if she would exchange our euros for Swiss francs. She wouldn't. She wasn't that friendly. It was very disappointing.

We accidentally booked a single room which we didn't realize until checkin. The front desk staff was so helpful and accommodating. First they immediately called housekeeping to prepare the room for two, and when we realized that it was going to be too small for both of us for a three night stay, they were happy to move us into a king room when it became available the next day. We left our luggage at the front desk and the bags were waiting for us in our new room when we arrived. Interactions with the front desk staff and housekeeping were pleasant throughout. We had a rental car and were able to park it in the underground garage which was a great relief. This hotel is also just next to the Thalwil train station, which has pros and cons. On the plus side, it's a fast and easy ride into Zurich HB and the city center. Conversely, if you get a room on one side of the hotel, you will hear train noise. While no one was working outdoors on the weekend, major construction noise started coming from the train station on Monday morning at 7 am. Ear plugs were provided in the room. I also liked how you could raise and lower the outdoor shutters which blocked out light in the morning. It was consistently 73 to 75 degrees F in the room and the only way to let cooler air in from outside was to open the balcony door - wish there had been a window instead because it was awkward to keep the door open all night. The room itself was well equipped with thoughtful amenities including cold water in the fridge, shower cap, sewing kit, body lotion, even a shoe horn to use during your stay. A downside is that most of the power outlets did not fit our US converter. However, all of the USB's worked and we were able to at least charge our phones and most other devices. The TVs offer a way to cast streaming services from your phone to the screen and it worked perfectly in our first room but not the second one. The breakfast assortment was impressive. Both hot and cold items and an excellent sitting area with a view of the lake. It was only free on Sunday. Fast and excellent Wi-Fi as well.

I knew I wanted to swim in lake Zurich, climb a 10,000+ hike and be close to the trains. This has all of that, but more importantly it has a staff that is super welcoming and aims to please. From the minute we arrived, which was a 3 hour train from Milan and an early one at that, they really understood our needs. They insisted we go swim in the lake, pointed us to a bit of a public but yet private area and it did not disappoint. They have fro yo in bar for those who are into that sort of stuff. The room is super eclectic, my only concern is the Europeans are somewhat stingy with their AC's and there is no control from within. Fancy auto blinds and lights hardwood floors throughout, and a nice balcony with a view of the lake. Quick elevators and some of the best cappuccino yet and trust me I've had a bunch. Yes I'm an IGNORANT American that only speaks English but they took the time to learn another language unlike me. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who's stressing over the $700 a night places in what I have found to be the most expensive European city yet of this tour and this is Country #7 on it..

The staff are amazing, the rooms are gorgeous, the views are spectacular, the service is top-notch, and the dining is delicious. I got a corner room on the top floor with two balconies and a window that overlooked further up the mountain. I had the delight on seeing some cows out there on my first morning. I utilized the pool everyday, got a massage at the spa on my second day, and ate at the restaurant onsite everyday for breakfast and dinner. I recommend all of it! It can get chilly out on the terrace, even in summer, so they have thick fur coats at your disposal for when you want to sit outside. There is a smoking/cigar room inside and ability to smoke outside on the terrace. The staff will also bring anything to you anywhere onsite if you just call and ask. They have elevated plastic ware available for poolside dining. Overall, highly recommend!!

The rooms were well appointed but I wish they had been a little more cozy and a little less corporate. At breakfast the first morning, my friend and I both ordered the overnight oats. When the dish came we both assumed it was an amuse bouche because the portion size was hilariously small. Like shot glass size. I still giggle when I think about it. It turns out that all the breakfast portions are small because you can order an unlimited amount of dishes and they don't like food waste. While I can certainly appreciate that, it would have been nice if our server had explained that when we placed our order. We were better prepared the next morning. The food overall in Switzerland was just not my favorite. It was good but under seasoned for my taste. My favorite dishes at dinner were probably the carrot coconut soup and the summer salad. The large pool at Villa Honegg is certainly the star of the show. It's heated and open until 11pm and we spent as much time there as we could. The one downside about this hotel is that it is a 20-30 minute drive into down for any activities or reservations at other hotels. It is worth it for the view but know that you need to make plans well in advance for offsite activities.

This hotel was booked through Viking Cruises for the end of our river cruise. It is a beautiful hotel with really good customer service. The morning breakfast was included with our package, and it was very good. Besides the price the other complaint that I had was that the stand-alone shower was smaller than the one on our cruise ship.
