Service is quick and efficient. The line moves quickly. The number item is the teriyaki chicken which I ordered. It comes with rice and vegetables as well. I ordered a vegetable spring roll and my sprite beverage. The ambiance is clean for a food court. They have a great team of staff keeping the tables clean.

I was looking forward to coming here every Tuesday for their deal, but they stopped that literally the week after I found out about it! So much angst. There are now no more deals unless you sign up for Sarku Club membership. Sarku Japan is typically a crowded place at mall food courts, usually for the reason that it's cheaper and basic - fulfilling the pleasure of most people's palate. It's also pretty fast and fresh, as they take your order and cook it in front of you. When the cook serves you the protein on your plate, you grab it and help yourself to the plastic takeout bags on the side. I've tried all the proteins and they are all good and tender, and I think they give a decent amount of each. I like the chicken and beef a bit more than the shrimp. Each teriyaki plate comes with steamed rice and mixed vegetables (also steamed, most likely a mixture of broccoli and shredded zucchini and carrots). You can sub the rice for noodles or more steamed vegetables. Yes, the vegetables aren't salted, but a lot of people actually enjoy eating vegetables like that for health reasons. I just mixed them in with the teriyaki sauce already included on the meat and it's fine. The rice is surprisingly very fluffy and moist. If you're in need of a quick, lean, value meal with adequate value and macros, this is a fair choice.

Standard Sarku location. I grew up going to my local Sarku in South Florida, so this was nostalgic for sure. The lines are pretty long since the food is cheap and made in front of you teppanyaki style, and the food quantity is good for the price. Chicken teriyaki is standard chopped thigh meat with teriyaki sauce next to pre-chopped veggies and hot white rice. Don't expect authentic Japanese, but it gets the job done when you're hungry at the mall. Always a wait, but not much other choices around the busy food court.

Sarku, the place to go for cheap Asian-ish food. Food here is mediocre at best. My kids love this place though so this is a great choice for kid friendly fast food. Service is fast. The cooks are making food all day everyday it seems. This is good so you know you're not getting old food.

oh my gawd this was the worst meal I've had in a long time. Every single thing in the bento box was bland and lacked ANY flavor whatsoever. The California rolls were a joke, the vegetables were literally steamed and didn't event have salt, the teriyaki chicken was dry and I had to drench it in soy sauce to taste any flavor, and even the gyozas were somehow bland. I thought, "oh it's in a mall I'm sure it's good," WRONG! Just get Panda Express instead.

A classic staple in any mall, Sarku Japan is the thing I go for when I think I want to eat healthy bc their chicken teriyaki plate is only 640 calories. But let's be real I need extra sauce on everything so it's definitely higher. Located inside the hillsdale mall food court, this is one of the more popular spots bc it's a meal that checks boxes. Rice, protein, and veggies. Once you pick your meal, they'll load up your to go box and put the meats fresh off the grill into your box. I think for a meal for under $10, it's one of the most filling options in this particular food court. Is it the most flavorful, not really, but it does what it needs to do when you need a quick and filling meal. The portion sizes definitely have gotten smaller than in the past, so if you are extra hungry, go double protein.

    Jack R.

Yup, definitely two stars awful. Super dry chicken and awful raw veggies with cold gyoza and fake tasteless California roll. Do yourself a favor and choose any other good court place!

Chicken teriyaki, no rice, veggies only

Whenever I see a Sarku at the mall, that's what I'll be getting as my meal. Sometimes I go to a mall FOR Sarku! I always get the Teriyaki Chicken and if I'm with my mom, she usually gets the Teriyaki Chicken bento box. I usually get no rice, veggies only and they will quick fry a nice portion of veggies on the grill before putting it in my tray. The chicken is juicy, with some crispy edges and it goes well with the veggies. I usually ask them for extra sauce at the end which they always obliged. One thing I have noticed is while the prices have been going up bit by bit, like everything else, their meat portions have also gotten smaller. Still I don't normally order double meat cause I'm full enough from the regular portion that I can get a milk tea afterwards xD haha The only con I can think of is their sushi isn't it. Sometimes they're pre-made so when they hand it to you it's been refrigerated making the rice a bit hard. The seafood is also a hit and miss. So I would definitely only recommend the cooked food over the sushi.

I can't believe that I haven't tried this restaurant in the 20+ years that it's been around…read moredowntown San Mateo, but today was the day! We were looking for some light snacks & drinks to have before our Saturday night movie, and I finally came to try Fuji Sukiyaki. Nestled on the corner of Claremont & 3rd Avenue on the outskirts of the downtown food district, Fuji Sukiyaki is a nice, authentic, small Japanese restaurant serving good quality, reasonably priced, delicious Japanese food. The space itself isn't fancy, rather its plain & simple, and the focus here is on good Japanese food such as sushi, sashimi, nigiri, noodles, and comfort rice dishes. Everything tasted very fresh, portions were good, and service was polite & efficient. Ambiance felt casual, old-school, and no-frills, great for a light dinner on a time schedule. We started with boiled edamame & agedashi tofu appetizers. The edamame was some of the best I've had, it was nicely boiled, the beans had a nice crunchy texture & it was salted perfectly. The agedashi tofu was a generous portion, and the tempura dipping sauce and fish flakes were very tasty and perfectly seasoned. We also tried some Oshinko Maki (yellow pickle) and a Yam roll and they tasted very fresh with good sushi rice & wrapped in a salty Nori roll. I would definitely try more sushi here next time, given that enjoyed the taste of these two samplings so much. To wash it down, we tried the Yuki Nigori Lychee Sake that was a big, elegant bottle that gave us each around 6 servings of delicious & creamy sake. The taste was surprisingly good, it was rather thick, milky, sweet, and not too strong in the alcohol content. This nice drink perfectly washed down everything that we ate, and I wouldn't hesitate to order this $25 bottle again next time. Service was quick, professional, and efficient. Waitstaff walked around taking orders, explaining menu, and offering suggestions or descriptions when asked. The space is clean, airy, bright, and spacious. There is a main sushi bar to watch the chefs create their craft, a lot of tables to accomodate the crowd, and some larger party tables and even a big tatami room in the back with sliding screen doors, for private parties. The bathrooms were also impeccable. It took me 20 years to finally try this place, and now that I have, I plan on coming here more regularly. It is conveniently located, very accessible, and well-priced. The food, service, and ambiance are quick, casual, and simple, just what I like & look for in a casual restaurant to grab a few quick bites & drinks before embarking on nighttime plans & activities. Will be back soon!

This restaurant/bar is among one of the best, fun, and hospitable family-owned Japanese restaurants in San Mateo (along with Sushi Edomata, Izakaya Mai, and Fuji Sukiyaki) serving tasty food, delicious cocktails, and attentive service in a spacious, clean, and dynamic atmosphere. Plus, staying until close & afterwards, meant that I could catch up with Victor (the owner) & his son Bryan (the bartender) who I haven't seen since Tokie's Foster City days, I can't believe they've been here going on 8 years! We came to drink & snack & socialize after a movie, Izakaya-style. No disappointments here as far as drinks go: we tried the Cloud 9, Shiso Beautiful, White Lotus, and the Paloma. Each cocktail was presented in its own unique glass and the complex tastes really came out with every sip. The alcohol was not overpowering, and the many ingredients in each cocktail really came out delightfully & subtly. Of course, the bartenders preparing & serving them were really on top of their drink game and were very friendly, engaging, personable, and like-able. Since we were sitting st the bar itself, it was quite easy to keep the drinks coming, though much to the damage of our overall final tab, yikes! Food-wise, we needed some snacks to soak up this boozy escapade, so we ordered mostly appetizers & small plates. The Chili-garlic edamame was terrific & delightfully spicy. The tofu steak was pretty meaty tasting & filling for just being tofu, with a wonderfully sweet glaze & firm texture. The grilled eggplant was a big portion, also very tasty and a good compliment to the tofu steak. We also tried some mushroom miso soup & sesame spinach to round out the healthy eating intended to balance out the booze session. All the food was served quickly, well-presented, generously-portioned, warm, fresh, and with great flavors, good seasoning, and perfectly prepared. Then came closing time, and once the doors were locked, money counted, bills settled, and counters cleaned, Victor & Bryan treated us like family as they unwinded & relaxed from a busy Saturday night dinner crowd. We shared shots of sake, whiskey, vodka, and beer, and had a wonderful friendly time catching up on things past. I had not seen Victor & Bryan wasn't even born yet when I used to hang out at Tokie's in the original Foster City location. I actually prefer the San Mateo one now, it's spacious, warm, inviting, it uses a lot of wood accents to make it calm, comfortable, and fun to hang out. Lighting is dim, music is low, so it encourages conversation, socializing, and intimate interactions. I'd consider this to be one of the better Japanese restaurants in San Mateo- good food, interesting drinks, amazing service & hospitality, all in a warm, comfortable, and appealing space. It gets super busy here, and parking around here is really difficult, so either come early or come late, and maybe take an Uber/Lyft or walk through Central Park to get here. But you'll be glad that you did, because Tokie's is a solid culinary, alcohol, and social experience. Will be back for more, and I don't want to wait a few years to do it again, maybe just a few days this time, I've been missing out on the party here!

The staff also hovered as we were finishing our meal and asked several times if we were done/needed anything else and then less subtly if we could vacate the table. Also, we had placed ourselves on the Yelp waitlist instead of standing in the line outside and then were told when we went to check in that they don't use the Yelp waitlist, and that set us back a half hour. The food is great, but the logistics could use some work.
