Not many GF flavors, but that's due to Giffords fire
    Laura R.

This place is on the main drag heading into the actual harbor town. It's on the right, before Hannaford. There seems to be ample parking, and there are a few picnic tables on grass, under trees between the lot and the street. Not exactly picturesque, but not bad! Like *many* others, they carry Giffords ice cream products. This is not a good thing. Especially this year. After the fire to the primary plant for Giffords this past winter, they have outsourced to several other companies around the country. This initially seems like a good thing, to keep business going and such, BUT, the flavors I see had were NOT up to the Giffords standard. For example, one I ordered (NOT from Sarah's, but another ice cream stand) was *terrible* and a complete waste of $6. You could not even taste the black raspberry (there was virtually NO flavor, other than the chocolate squares. And yes, the color was off, too. One flavor I DO LOVE as a gluten free option, is the "Campfire S'mores" ... but NO ONE who carries Giffords has had it in the last 5-6 weeks tried to get it. Every shop says they order and order and don't get a lot of what they order. I don't know if Giffords did the right thing by outsourcing. I was already a bit bugged by the fact that I can get it in a grocery store, so why spend so much extra at a stand?? Most of the available flavors are NOT GF, as they have crust, cookies, etc added in. I'm thinking the interim makers are inferior and trying to hide that by relying on the additives. I prefer home-made, at the actual location, if I can find it. And I did! I'd find other locations that sell a different local brand, such as Shain's or Shaker Pond.

This is a great little place in the Boothbay region, so if you want a nice treat they have it all. As a bonus, they have quite a solid selection of 'dairy free' options which is great for a family like ours. This is the kind of place we will come back to.

Best ice cream, I had the black bear and my husband had the blueberry! staff was friendly and fun!

It's a cop out to talk about sampling spoons as waste when I've seen other ice cream shops find solutions to that, it's really just greed. They know they'll sell ice cream regardless so they'll cut that corner. Maybe lines are a little longer, but as a local, it makes me not want to come back all year long. Also, the base recipe they seem to use is VERY thick and rich, to the point where it's arguably too much and takes away from the flavors. I've had some good bites here too so it's not a dud altogether. I'll say I'm partial to higher end ice cream (which I feel MDI falls into), and will pay a premium happily for a great product, but I haven't been back in a while because it's hit or miss if I'll enjoy my ice cream since they don't offer samples. I've also not craved any of the 5 or so flavors I've tried in order to return for them. There's great potential there, and I am opening to trying it again if they decide to prioritize local customers over the summer tourists.

Between the dessert cafe menu being available and the shops being side by side and the website not being so discerning this is honestly the second time I've tried to go to the dessert shop and it being closed. To my dismay not only that but the lady scooping wasn't the friendliest person either since we drove out of the way we got some ice cream. We sampled a few. I got the goatcheese blackberry chamboard and it was tasty. As was the Cuban coffee, but YIKES. 2 small scoops was $17! I have no issue paying for ice cream, but for a small being $8 and change, that is nutty even for me. And it was truly a small scoop- not like other New England scoop shops when a "small" is the size of a tennis ball. This was a true small. Imma pass

Our server was very friendly and was happy to answer any questions we had as well as let us sample flavors. I got a small cup with a scoop of Maine Whoopie Pie and a scoop of Speculoos & Chocolate. The pretzel one had a caramel taste which I liked, and the whoopie pie was a vanilla base with chocolate cake--both were super tasty and creamy. I do wish it was a little bigger for the price but it was so good nonetheless. They have seating outdoors and it was a cool day out so we enjoyed our treats outside right by the boats. They also have a dessert bar next door serving desserts with alcohol, she said it'll be opening in a few weeks. Cool idea!

You scream. I…read morescream. We all scream... for site made ice cream on a working Maine dairy farm ! This is a special place... a farm on a hill with their own farm shop featuring glass-bottled milk, sandwiches, and most importantly... Ice Cream ! Starting mid-April or so, they open up "The Barnyard" which is a nice little petting zoo for the kids... and occasionally a "Goat Yoga" spot for adults... which is just so uniquely crazy it almost makes me wish I did yoga. Not into yoga...? I get you. Lucky for us, they also have a hardware store / lumber yard, so you could feasibly come for Mocha Chip and stay for the 4x4 milled posts, and that's not an experience you'll soon get at a national big-box lumber store. Or a Baskin Robbins, for that matter. This place is an experience. The farm is gorgeous, the staff are friendly, the animals are fun, the lumber yard is definitely there, and the product... well that's where it's at... it's excellent. There are a few working dairy farms like this one dotted around the state, and I encourage you to check out each and every one. Smiling Hill Farm is that extra special sort of place, where it's only a few miles drive outside of Portland, but it feels worlds away and it's so, so worth the effort to get to. They also have ready-to-go quarts in the freezer, their various dairy offerings, and rotating, seasonal farm shop fare. Support your local farmers! Also... I've found the local barn cats to be super friendly and just a treat to hang with. YMMV
