I recently consigned a watch with him. He was a very nice guy and made me feel safe, as a female, to not have to deal with unsavory people as I worked to close out my late husband's estate. I was told up front, that he charges $500. There was no talk of additional charges. All was going well as I was able to call and get status updates with full transparency on the need to price adjust. The watch recently sold and he notified me of the amount I would receive. When I arrived, I asked him how much the watch actually ended up selling for sans his commission. Well, when I did the math, he took a commission of $600. When I asked about the difference in price he said it was due to credit card charges (I was selling and not buying), cleaning up the watch (which was to be included in the original $500) and if the new owner said it was running fast, he would have to take it back and fix it. None of this was told to me as part of an upfront charge. It feels a bit like a bait and switch. I do believe he understood my concern around the dollar difference, but he did not offer to make it right. Suddenly the very thing I appreciated about him, me feeling safe as a female, may have served to my detriment. I just feel you should honor your word. I have dealt with Andrew on several occasions. First off, you can tell that he truly enjoys watches and the lore surrounding them. He is knowledgeable about the brands, movements, well just about every aspect of watches and jewelry in general. If he does not know, he knows how to find out! I have successfully sold through him as well. I I have found that he gives you a much better price for your item than others, and as a purchaser, you will find his prices very competitive, and his assessments quite spot on. He is able too do this because he keeps his overhead lower, as he is in a building, not a ground level showroom and probably has no reason to spend to advertise! There is always a good variety of inventory on hand and if there is something that you want, he can probably get it ! Most important, he's a good guy who will give you the straight information and not talk down to you or be condescending, which seems to be a trait of many people who I have met in his profession. As much as I hate cliche's, you come in as a customer and leave as a friend, this is applicable here. As I look down at my watch to check the time, I realize that the one that I am wearing right now, a "Ball" chronograph, was the first watch that I had ever gotten from him, and that was many moons ago, when he was in a different location! My experience is kinda mixed. I dropped off a cheap watch (under $300) for repair, as I needed a new crystal -- this was before the xmas holiday. When I called for an estimate, Andrew told me $80. When I dropped off the watch he told me $90, which is fine because the $80 estimate was via the phone and sight unseen. Then, he called me the other day and told me it was ready and would be $85. Ok, cool, $5 less. I go to pick it up today -- and he charges me $95, citing the unexpected extra cost of shipping. I call bullshit. It's only a few bucks, and he did a nice job replacing the crystal ... but this sort of price shifting (four different quotes, ending in the most expensive) is concerning. I tried Andrew based on the reviews here and because my family is out of the jewelry business now. Happened to shop for my 1st used breitling watch. Ive owned several different brands and decided on a colt super quartz for my 1st. Yes i live in milwaukee wi and its real far and their is a few stores around here but after searching the net i came across a store called sansom watches in Philly's jewelers row. I called and spoke with andrew the owner. Wow was he nice. Customer service is everything. After making a few calls and talking too him i decided on purchasing with him. During the inspection process, He said for the type of watch I should not try to spend alot of money to repair. Also all watches come with a 1 year warranty. I had my grandfather's 1940s watch restored by Sansom Watches earlier this year. While the watch turned out nicely, unfortunately I cannot recommend them for a number of reasons. Pros: Andrew is a nice guy and a generally pleasant person; the watch turned out very nicely - it barely worked at all and now keeps excellent time; pricing seemed fair to me (especially compared to Govberg) Cons: Andrew doesn't do the repairs, he outsources to a "tech" and therefore doesn't have detailed knowledge of what's going on with the watch; poor communication - i wouldn't hear anything for several weeks at a time and had to initiate all contact; he quoted 10-14 business days, but the watch wasn't ready for nearly 3 months; finally, and most importantly, they had replaced the original signed crown on the watch w/ an unsigned generic crown without informing me. I would have said yes regardless if it was necessary to repair the watch, but the fact that both the tech and Andrew lied about it and insisted it had not been replaced is what I find most concerning. Look at the filtered reviews for Sanson Watches on Yelp (below all the recommended reviews) - Andrew wrote a 5-star review of his own shop which Yelp was able to screen as an illegitimate review... Yes, the watch turned out well, but I think it's worth spending more if it means you trust the person doing the repairs. Also, it's probably better if you can just work w/ a watchmaker directly and cut out the middle man. If you're having a Rolex or other high end watch serviced, given their history with my restoration, I'd be worried they may use unauthorized generic parts to service your watch. read more

I first encountered Sansom Watches after needing some fresh appraisals for insurance purposes. First off, Andrew offered a price that was approximately one fourth of what I was quoted by one of the larger, well-known shops in the area. I found Andrew to be extremely professional and, perhaps more importantly, and extremely nice guy and genuine watch enthusiast. We sat and talked watches for some time and I learned a great deal through our conversations. He noticed that I had been a bit heavy-handed when changing the straps on one of my pieces and explained to me how a few imperfections could be remedied very easily. I went ahead and had him do the work on the watch. It was done the same day at a very reasonable cost. The piece now looks brand-new. When I went the next morning to pick up the watch, Andrew was once again happy to chat and, knowing that I liked that sort of thing, showed me some of the new pieces he had gotten in.
