I interviewed a number of orthopedic surgeons after I blew up my knee skiing Mammoth moguls at 35 mph. Destroyed my ACL, fractured my tibial plateau, and significant bone bruising, which is not good news for a 60 year old. Dr. Samagh stood out from the rest by his attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and outstanding resume. He is on top of the most recent literature and was able to answer my detailed and numerous questions. His office or himself would return calls within minutes to answer any crazy question I could dream up. It is one year post surgery, and I am back skiing moguls (albeit at 10-15 mph) and powder snow, hiking, surfing, diving, and playing basketball. My knee stability and proprioception is amazing given the severe trauma of the initial injury. He and his staff are the gold star standard. He is "up" on modern procedures and implements them. He stays with the patient, listens, is compassionate, and takes time. He is very well respected in the community. His staff are friendly and helpful and get everything you need done. I've never been made to wait for my appointment. Note: I've seen someone arrive 25 min late, and they were told they'd have to reschedule to preserve his being on time for his patients so be there on time. I actually really appreciate this - if some come late then the rest of us all will wait while he give that person fair time and attention during our appointments. Dr. Samagh was the assistant team doctor for the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Blackhawks. If he didn't hate the cold so much, he'd still be treating professional athletes in the Windy City. If professional sports team owners trusted Dr. Samagh with their players, that should give you an idea of how good he is. I've known Dr. Samagh for 20 years. He's examined me twice: once for a torn labrum and again for a torn meniscus. In both situations Dr. Samagh listened to my concerns, examined the joints in question, and within a few minutes made a diagnosis. In both cases, subsequent x-rays/MRI confirmed his diagnosis. For the labrum, Dr. Samagh advised against surgery given my life goals, instead recommending physical therapy, which has worked out well for me. When I injured my knee, I flew out to Chicago to see Dr. Samagh -- that's how good he is. By nature, surgeons usually want to cut, cut, cut, so it's reassuring to me that Dr. Samagh isn't going to recommend surgery unless it's the best course of action. read more

After 12 years of hobbling and seeing 6 different doctors, I finally had had enough of the pain from a right hip labral tear. Not one of those doctors suggested a tear although after much research I knew that's what I had. I had had ultrasounds, MRI's, Physical therapy (which made it worse) and cortisone injections (that never helped). I could barely walk or sleep for years. I continued taking care of my family and my elderly parents. My parents passed away and the pandemic hit; I was able to start up my research again to find someone to help me. I found Dr. Samagh and after reading his back ground and that he was well versed in labral tears; I was sooo excited that someone might actually believe me! I made an appointment with him and was so impressed with his thoughtfulness and intelligence about labral tears! I did the testing he required and an MRI with contrast which no one else did. There it was - finally! On May 11, 2020, Dr. Samagh preformed an arthroscopic procedure securing my labrum with 3 anchors as well as removing two pieces of approximate sized 5 mm loose bodies in my joint; among other things. He also injected PRP which I believe greatly helped my recovery. It has been approximately 90 days since my procedure and I am walking pain free and sleeping well. I have had to re-train my brain as it has gotten used to the hobble. I have to remind myself to walk correctly. I can't believe it took this long to find someone to help with my excruciating pain! No one answered the phone the first two times I called there's no answering system (no leaving a voicemail, no recording with hours, nothing). When I finally got an answer the receptionist was curt - she seemed upset that I didn't know Dr. Samagh specializes in hips, knees, and shoulders (despite that being nowhere on the website). She asked "which body part?" and I stated that I had a few I had issues with, but "I guess we could start with my back" to which she replied "ok he doesn't do that". Though I have hip and knee issues, as well, there was certainly no need to continue a call with someone who made me feel like a nuisance for trying to find relief for my ailments. Really disappointing, considering the other glowing reviews! Receptionists are the first people patients/customers interact with - having one who is terse isn't great. read more

I have a very complicated neurological condition that requires me to see a nearly endless list of specialists and over the years I've learned to only work with the best, to the point where most of my "team" is in Cleveland and San Francisco. Because the brain moves the legs, I've been working with Dr. Samagh for the past year and I hold him in the same regard as the specialists I travel to see. Not only is he at a point in his life where he's at the peak of his game, he's genuinely a nice guy who I enjoy working with and very humble. At one point, when I inquired about a particularly specialized orthopedic procedure he told me that it falls in his purview but he's not the "best" and referred me to a Dr. in LA and his professional mentor in Chicago who he thought would be better than himself - in this day and age where everyone thinks they're qualified for everything because they stayed at a Holiday Inn Express (that's a commercial if you don't get the reference) it's nice to work with Dr's like him. Lastly, having lived in NYC, ATL, SF and LA, despite what people might think and how well UCSD markets itself, SD doesn't have nearly the talent pool - Dr Samagh is rare NorCal talent in San Diego. read more

Hip Impingement and Labrum Repair I am very grateful for Dr Samagh's work. I was nervous making the decision to get hip surgery (28 year old male). I saw multiple doctors in the Southern CA area, wanting to make sure my diagnosis was correct. I felt most doctors could more or less help me get better. But Dr Samagh really differentiated himself. He was attentive, trustworthy and I sensed he genuinely cared about me getting better. I am very, very happy I chose to move forward with his regiment. I can't say enough. 6 months post surgery and I am out of PT and back to being active. He was there for any questions I had. He also referred me to a great physical therapist (Rise PT in Carlsbad, CA). Kristi in the front office was also great. I had some insurance claim issues and she was helpful getting me on the right path, providing insight into the way medical business and claims are handled. I highly recommend this office. read more

I've had multiple surgeries over the years on both shoulders and right knee starting with Murphy Sports Medicine and Valetta Orthopedics, both of whom are excellent doctors as well. The difference I've experienced with Dr. Samagh is the personal attention provided during initial consultation, pre-op, and post op appointments as well as being an excellent surgeon. Dr. Samagh provided additional options other doctors didn't perform or didn't offer as an option. I injured my right shoulder in 2017 and tried physical therapy, PRP, and rest. It eventually deteriorated to the point that I was limited in what I could do. Dr Samagh took the time to provide a range of options, both surgical and non-surgical discussing the benefits and drawbacks of each. Ultimately it was my decision on what path to take based on all the information presented and recommendations from Dr. Samagh. I chose to go with a newer procedure using a Regeneten bio-inductive implant with a faster recovery time, but with the knowledge there was some risk associated due to the fact it was just a patch and not technically repairing the tear. A couple months into the recovery, I started to feel my shoulder become weaker and experienced increased pain. Back to the drawing board and looking at the other options. I continued PT without making progress and it was decided that a full arthroscopic surgery would be needed, except for the fact that my insurance, Blue Shield/Cross denied the additional surgery. Dr Samagh completed a peer-to-peer review with the insurance and they approved minimal surgery on only the partial tear and not the additional issues with bicep tendon, stating any additional procedures were elective and and therefore not covered. At my pre-op for my second surgery within a year on the shoulder, Dr. Samagh and I discussed what was in my best interest regardless of what the insurance decided through their 3rd party provider Evicore. Dr Samagh stated that he would do whatever was needed to get me back to being active regardless of Evicore/Blueshield-Cross' denial. My surgery was August 2nd, 2023 and Dr. Samagh discovered that the Regeneten Patch actually rolled up and was rejected by my body - go figure. after he did some research and discussed with the corporation who produces the patch, I was one of 5 that they had been notified of the issue. After removing the patch and staples, he did the full repair and I am just starting physical therapy after 5 weeks in a sling with a great range of motion. Friends and family ask why I choose to drive 40 minutes each way to see Dr. Samagh and my reply is that I'd rather spend the time driving for an excellent doctor who will take the time to discuss my specific situation, than wait 40+ minutes after my appointment time to be seen due to the size of the practice. read more

Dr. Samagh performed two surgeries for me this past year (2019). One was a meniscus repair on a previous surgery that didn't heal well. Dr Samagh performed a left hip replacement surgery on me in August of 2020. My one question before the surgery was how does he make sure my legs come out the same length. He assured me that wouldn't be a problem and he takes multiple measurements during the surgery to ensure there is little to no length disparity. Well apparently Dr Samagh does not know how to measure. The first thing I noticed the first time I stood up post op was how much longer my left leg was! It was horrible! With each follow up visit he assured me the hip would "settle in." First he said the joint had to loosen up. Then he said it had to tighten up. Then he said it was done intentionally beciase im younger and more active than most hip pts. None of his "reasons" ever made sense. He continually minimized and diminished the disparity in the length. He kept telling me it was a few millimeters and that was normal. I kept telling him none of what I was experiencing was normal. I would show him how bent my left leg was when I would stand, and he would still tell me it would be ok. After visits with other surgeons since the surgery, I have been told my left leg is at least 15 mm's longer then the right! That is more than a 1/2 inch! After months of dismissing me on how bad it was, he finally ran out of excuses. All he did was cuase me more problems and the only fix to my situation is another surgery. In my opinion, what he did to me was negligent, careless and wreckless. I am in physical therapy more than a year later bc my hip is just not right. All he did was cause me more more problems than I started with and forcing me to go thru another surgery. read more

He is a man of integrity who looks at the whole patient, and is not closed minded to wellness treatments post surgery such as laser therapy, acupuncture, and massage. When you see Dr. Samagh, he spends quality time with you and really listens. He is a skilled surgeon who uses up to date surgical treatment options such as PRP and the bovine cell patch.
