The southside isn't exactly teeming with beaches and along with the tiny and hard to access whiterock beach at Killiney, Sandymount is pretty much the heavy hitter south of the river and what a place. Although yesterday when I was there the weather was its usual gloom self, the beautiful panorama of Dublin made up for it. You can see north to the Howth Peninsula, south to Dun Loaighre as well as east out into the Irish channel. Its not a sit on the beach kinda place and is more flat and strand like but great for walking, running, taking the dog out for a walk. If the tide is in the walk parallel to the sea is still nice and takes in the Martello tower near Sandymount. Would also be a great place to fly kites. Another great free experience in Dublin to enjoy.

The sandy tidal flats of Sandymount strand are something which needs to be experienced by all. During low tide, the water seems to completely drain away for miles and the only hint of the sea is the outline of little sailboats on the horizon. So many people will walk endlessly to the horizon although I am content to watch from a little closer to the beach. I have enjoyed quite a few strolls and one unfortunate buggy push through the sandy flats (I recommend leaving the buggy at home or close to the road). I bought a kite last year and really enjoyed taking it out here with my son for a flight. Although the novelty may have been lost on him after awhile, I certainly enjoyed it. It can get very windy here though so I would recommend the stronger nylon or spinnaker kites and not the cheapo plastic ones. Sandymount strand is a good place to visit and is in close proximity to transport links. I think it is a 10 minute walk from Sydney Parade or Sandymount DART stations.

I have driven by here so many times and always said 'god wouldn't that be a lovely place to go for a walk...' So this week I finally got up off my backside and hit the beach for a bit of a 'jaunt.' It was a lovely evening and the place was filled with guys out running, groups of girls out walking and yapping, a load of people gathered in a circle partaking in a yoga class on brightly coloured mats and families out for a gallivant with their dogs. They have a path where you can walk along, but I chose to go down on to the sand and really 'embrace' the experience. Bottom line is its lovely place to go for a nice walk or a run. I'm not sure how keen I'd be on going when the weather's a bit crap though. I'm pretty sure I'd get blown away.

Where did all the water go :(

Nice view. When I came here I noticed it seemed like a good place to bring your dog or your kids.

One of the most beautiful places to run, walk, walking with friends! Especially on a hot summers day, great place to have grown up by

A great place for a walk, even with a four legged friend. Near enough to the city centre too and is accessible by dart. Not really a sunbathing and buckets and spades sort of beach

I have the pleasure of walking this beach every morning before work. No two days are the same on this idyllic Dublin beach.

Ah Dollymount strand, sure is'nt it lovely all the same. Even on a crisp February day its a decent…read morespot for a longer than long walk... Your feet can take you a few miles or kilometres in either direction, coasting along aimlessly upon the grains of sand. If you walk far enough you can even begin to feel like Tom Hanks did in the movie Castaway. Its a very tranquil place, with beautiful scenery to boot. If your dog cannot be trusted off the lead then my advice would be to keep him/her on it - there are loads of sand dunes for little Fido, Max, Snoopy ( insert your dogs name HERE) to go missing in... You will also look like an absolute goon running awkwardly, screaming your dogs name at the top of your lungs. whilst they ignore you and keep running. Running up that hill... The parking is free along the road but be sure not to park up at the roundabout unless you have a valid disabled parking permit. I believe the fines are €125 euro from the Guards now. Enough to cripple anyones month and leave your wallet a bit lame. You have been warned!

Dollymount was the place to make Dublin childhood memories (so I've been told). Every summer "back…read morein the day" the long sandy stretch was packed with kids, dogs at the surf, and cars parked along the beach to act as a breaker for that incessant wind. Queues of cars lined the Clontarf road waiting to get across the single lane wooden bridge (still do!). It's still a lovely spot for an afternoon walk, just be sure to be off the sand by dusk unless you're a local or part of a crowd. During the day the strand is a haven for kite surfers, dog walkers (check the surf for spring-loaded retrievers bounding along the breakers in utter doggy delight) and photogs -in the evenings however an entirely different element takes over, their detritus liable to be found underfoot the next day in the form of used needles and assorted garbage. Translation: wear shoes.

It's completely free and you can't help but feel better about the world afterwards. This is a fantastic running spot-it's flat, scenic, safe....and even more importantly-you get to run on grass. Pavement running can be tough on sensitive souls like me and it can be a struggle to find nice shock absorbing grass without ending up in a field full of cows and their excrement. Generations (probably) of runners have worn a little path into the grass all along the promenade so that it's both easy to run on and free of ankle-twisting potential. Just walking along is one of my favourite pastimes too. On a sunny weekend the place is buzzing with families, buggies, couples, walkers, runners, men with flags, picnickers....but doesn't seem crowded. The excellent cycle lane which extends to Howth means that there is no danger of being mown down. Benches and shelters along the route make it easy to stop and soak up the view. I love the weird yellow and orange exercise things. I plan on making use of them some day....when nobody is around to see! A stroll out to Bull Island is invigorating and it's very difficult to believe that you're still in Dublin out there. The only problem is having to come back over the bridge and back to reality :-(

Definitely not I, when I moved to Dublin. My first experiences of this fascinating city were of drug pushers and the homeless in Marlborough St and the surrounding delightful nooks and crannies of D1. It was a while before I even ventured south of the Temple Bar region. Yes indeedy, my initial experience of Dublin was most certainly not a balanced one. However, when I finally found a place to call home just north of the city I came across the serenity and the class of Clontarf Promenade. I confess I was astounded. This does not even LOOK like Ireland! Where are the bargain basement shops and the jostling elbows and the 101 fast food outlets? The Prom, as I affectionately refer to it, has been the site for many a sun-soaked picnic or morning jog. It is an expansive, wonderfully green (shut up, I'm Australian - we get excited about grass and stuff), and family friendly place to spend a morning, afternoon or Summer evening. It's a favourite route of many of the area's joggers and cyclists - walking and cycling tracks take you all the way from Fairview through to Bull Bridge (where you can continue along the wooden bridge to Bull Island if you still have the energy). I'm especially fond of the bright yellow exercise machines placed along the running track. As someone with an inexplicable phobia of gyms I convince myself that a jog along the prom and a short turn on the outdoor exercise bike and weightlifting apparatus will suffice for all my exercise needs (and I think I'm justified here). Clontarf Promenade is a wonderfully peaceful place to chill out in, I definitely recommend trying it (on a sunny day!) The 130 bus from Abbey St serves this area, and Clontarf Dart station is a stone's throw away.
