Ticknock is a real secret charm for me. I remember I discovered it 2 summers ago on my day off during the week. It was a particularly glorious and sunny day (so definitely not last summer), and i remember looking out my window of that flat i was in at the time which had a view south where you could see the mountain line, and I looked at the highest point where i could see a large antenna sticking out, and i thought to myself in a moment of spontaneity,"hmm....i'll go there then!!!!" Didn't really plan a course, i just hopped on the bike and headed south. 3 hours later (i got lost a whole load o' times!!), I found myself at the base of the hill, and it's a good thing i didn't know how long the ascent was before i embarked on it, because by the time i made it to the top, I was completely banjaxed! I was tempted to call a hearse to whisk me to the local crematorium!! After reviving myself with a very warm can of coke and 2 energy bars, i walked the bike to a rocky mound, and i climbed to the top and i took the picture you see below! I was staggered by it! A full 360 degree panorama of Dublin, taking in Bull island, Howth and Dun Laoghaire in the same view.
I can't recommend this place more highly. The only drawback is that there is no easy way to the top. First of all, no bus routes, so you need a car (or in my case, you tough it out on the bike, and i've done it a dozen times and it is proper brutal), and you still have to park your car at a certain point and hike to the top of a very steep hill for about 1.5 kms to the top. Boy it's worth it though!! read more
