One local described the Castle Inn to me as a traditional country inn. I hate to disappoint you,…read morethis is not the countryside, it's still the burbs. However, that takes nothing away from the country inn feel once inside the pub and the cosy country decor and smell of woodsmoke feel natural and comforting unlike the many pubs who strive for this effect. Lunch was pretty standard pub fare, nothing exciting, nothing awful and the selection of beers was good as was the service. Returning in the evening for a drink, the welcome was warm and it had a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. This is a well-run and welcoming place for a drink or meal, while the food is perfectly acceptable and enjoyable, if they could up the quality of the choices and cooking it could easily make my must-go-to list for that Brit pub experience when in the area.

In the winter the smaller bar has a big log fire burning and there is additional seating in the larger bar and a fairly new conservatory, although this can feel a little out of the way. There is a small garden out the front although this is taken with tables and chairs so no play area for children - which makes this pub a real draw if you fancy time away from yours (or other peoples) kids! I can particularly recommend the chilli, which comes complete with it's own mini loaf of bread!

Since I now live in the boonies, chippies are a dime a dozen in our neck of the woods. But we'd…read moreheard this one is a little different, a little. Well, classic. But, very good. So, we decided to give it a go, and boy were we pleased. Walking in, you see that it's not just a take away chippy. You can sit in the restaurant as well and get served. So we went with that option. The minute you sit down, they serve a small plate of shrimp. Last evening's had a whole bunch of roe, which freaked my partner out a little, but hey, more for me! :) Anyway, the portion sizes here are much more appropriate than most chippies in London, and a small cod and chips is a good enough meal for one. The batter is very crispy, and the chips tasty. The restaurant is even licensed, so we had a white wine each (cheap wine btw) and a fry up for dinner. Classy! It's definitely more "local" and feels like a timeless British kind of an establishment where it's less like Superfish, but more like "Cheers" where everybody does know your name. A great chippy, oozing with atmosphere, service and classic British... "charm".

What can I say about Superfish that the ever-present queue for fish and chips does not?…read moreThis is truly an under-rated gem. I have been to award-winning, supposedly best in the country fish'n'chip shops and they have not been as good as Superfish. This is a seriously, seriously good takeaway, and if you want good fish and chips you could do a lot worse than join the Superfish queue.
