I'm always concerned about the quality and freshness of the food if a restaurant isn't busy. However in sands I didn't need to be. We had a few different starters between us. All were very good. The mains (especially the steaks) couldn't be faulted - in fact my rib eye was better than a steak I had at gauchos a couple of weeks ago. The restaurant didn't really get busy which is a bit of a shame, as the only thing lacking was a bit more atmosphere. This restaurant doesn't deserve to be empty! Well worth a visit.....and I hope I'll pick a busier evening next time.

I've always been fond of the Ram's riverside location however, and at the other end you can grab some bay window seating and maybe catch a glimpse of Kingston's famous, historic and basically simply incredible Coronation Stone (which I can tell you about in GREAT detail). Drinks wise, there are some locally brewed ales here and some other stuff of which my beer drinking friend approved, so that's good. Non drinkers are also well served with two of my personal favourites - Appletise and Big Tom as well as some Fentimans etc. We really do treat non drinkers so much better in bars in the UK than they do in the US (fountain soda? NO. Disgusting. And nonsensical given far broader US range of fancy sodas).

The Ram is a real ale pub and seems to be a free house - when I was there recently I drank Doom Bar, whilst my husband drank Abbott. In addition, they have a good selection of both wines and lagers. This is a large pub, with a long, narrow garden at the back. They serve food both at lunchtimes and the evening, and seem to have a good selection. When I ate there many years ago when I worked in Kingston the burgers were excellent, but that really was some time ago! The staff are very friendly and efficient. I was there for the live music on a Wednesday (which was very good, even if my daughter's boyfriend is the bass player), and it was very busy - mostly youngish folk, but besides me and my husband, there were a smattering of oldies. The toilets are clean but dated, and could do with a refurb. Otherwise, this is a good real ale pub - I recommend it.

We were there all evening this Saturday and it was very quiet despite there being a football game on. They serve food only during lunch time, which was sad to hear. The drinks are decent and good prices for the area, though a very limited selection. The decor is actually really cute and eclectic, though very much pub-like. I appreciated all the Marvel stuff on the walls and the cute hot air balloon hanging from the ceiling! They've also got loads of board games which they don't mind you using, though they are a bit of a stretch to get! The staff I spoke to were really sweet and seemed to get on well with the locals. Of course it's not a pub you'd go out of your way for, but if you're in the area already and want a quiet drink you could probably do much worse.

We check the menu and I'm having fish and chips. As starters we have Scotch eggs and sausage rolls. Both are very tasty and a great way to start the meal. The problem is that the service really leaves us hanging here. Out waitress like takes forever to serve us out drinks and forgets half the stuff... okay, maybe she just had a bad day or was new, but it was quite annoying. So thankful I made a reservation earlier in the week as we arrived and were informed they were booked. Thank you Yelpers for the tip. The pork, turkey and beef were moist and tender but the roasted veggies were AMAZING. The chefs were kind enough to make us a shack burger. Delicious as well. The son ordered the Beef Bourgogne as well as Mac & Cheese. Delicious as well. The updates to this lovely local pub definitely raise the bar on eating establishments. It was fine dining. During the summer months, drinking outside with a great view of Tower Bridge is pretty sweet.
