This little wine bar and restaurant dies pretty much everything right. From the friendly and helpful staff to the industrial chic of the decor, it just feels very classy and upmarket. The wine selection is amazing and so well put together that you can tell the wine director knows their stuff. Wine in any case is the main attraction with a wide range available to suit any palate. That is not to say the food doesn't hold its own, though. The menu is just the right size and every dish crafted with skill and passion. Even after finishing our meal, the sight of other distress leaving the kitchen almost made us hungry for more. All in all this is a little gem, tucked away in a corner. It's a nice upscale space with quite a few seats at the centerpiece bar and tables around the outside which are just about all on a window plus there are about 4 tables outside when the weather is good. Ingredients are high quality though your bill will likely match, and the team service can be a bit quirky at times (our dinner started with a new server spilling a glass of rose Champagne on our table including a bit on my wife and her white coat on the back of her chair). Pea soup was quite nice, as was the crab salad appetizer. My wife also enjoyed her seared scallops while my fish pie was a bit under seasoned but just not great especially at £21.50. Cheese to end the meal was a good option and we didn't mind the small portions since it was at the end of our meal. There are about 30-40 wines by the glass including some higher end pours and all are served in good stemware. The Taittinger vintage Comtes de Champagne is a solid choice, whereas the white Burgundy was way too heavy on oak and the Hugel Riesling was not really recognizable as Hugel, Riesling, or even Alsatian (and yes, I've tasted through many Hugel wines at their tasting room in Riquewihr). There are also a few sweet wines including a Port that went well with our cheese plate and was comped by the house for spilling Champagne on us earlier. You're not getting the Michelin starred experience of Texture but this strangely named place is more casual and the space is nice if some of the staff might be less experienced. It's never a good sign when you ring up for a reservation and the woman on the other end of the line :::::sighs:::::: heavily. I mean, what? I had mistakenly called the wrong number, and had reached the "head office" for 28-50 (updated on Yelp to the correct number, by the way --- I've saved you all the pain!). Perhaps if you work in the "head office" then you feel like you don't need to be polite to customers that would essentially like to come through the doors and spend money to eat, drink and dine with you. This woman sighed, lectured me about dialing the wrong number and begrudgingly allowed me to make a reservation and booked me in. Why all the trouble when we are going to end up at the same place? If you have a head office, how about -- be able to transfer seamlessly to your other locations or drop the damn attitude.? It was a special occasion though, and one for which we certainly needed nice champagne. I had heard such great things about 28-50 but had never been able to jump in after work as it was always packed. Lunch seemed like a good chance to not just celebrate, but finally check this place out. Service was a bit scattered. No less than 4 servers took care of our table -- none of which were very apt at explaining dishes, providing requests in a normal time frame, or being overly helpful. The sommelier (I think) did recommend two glasses of nicely chilled bubbly, so the trip was not a total bust. Our food took over an hour to come out. Unacceptable as most people dining are needing to return to work within a reasonable time frame. An hour is not reasonable. This was not a busy time. We didn't order elaborate dishes. In fact I ordered off the set menu (Icelandic cod over couscous) and my dining partner the seafood platter (of which, none is cooked). I am not sure how long it takes to arrange crustaceans and such on a bed of ice, but apparently -- awhile. Also, my starter (duck terrine) was lackluster at best, strangely dry. I had requested the rabbit (which they said they had) and then it was replaced with duck. 3 cornichons, two small pieces of bread, dry terrine -- no no no. Overall pretty lukewarm here. I think it must be a dream to come for a few glasses of wine at the bar (you'd have to arrive before the after work crowd), but I definitely would not return for the attitude, and lax service and mediocre food that follows it. My advice to 28-50: relax. Seriously. You serve wine: drink some, think some and start treating customers well, creating better food and focusing on what is important when running a business: PEOPLE. read more

We went last minute for new year's eve and tried their three course menu for the night with canapés and a glass of champagne. Overall it was good but it started off amazing and declined throughout the courses. The scallops appetizer was cooked perfectly but the medium steak I ordered for the main was well over and quite chewy. The coconut creme brûlée for dessert was way too sweet and was only enjoyable for a few bites. The service was good but perhaps the food could be better for a nye special. read more

That was disappointing...!! -Our favorite pork belly was "hhhmmwahh'ish" -4 people at the table, 2 rib eyes got sent back (not medium-rare but medium well done..) my Onglet was okay, not great. The mussels were boring but not bad. -our favorite triple cooked fries (and also the bowl of thin French fries) were not crunchy or fried hot enough...and I don't believe they were fried 3 times...as they had the same fake tan the French had. -Lovely staff (well....we come here almost every week..) -Great wine. -Good vegetables. You can sit at the bar or a table with a food menu available makes for a lovely night sitting sipping different wines (or sticking to one bottle if you prefer) and then having the bar snacks once the munchies set in. As the evening went on the venue filled up but had a great atmosphere. Waiting staff were polite and knowledgable in the wine. As we sat and sipped ours there was job envy as we watched the waitress open and sample the wines before serving (spitting after of course!). It is always a pleasure to be party to someones love story. 28 - 50 Wine Workshop and Kitchen feels to me, like a (brain) child born out of passion and love. Thought up on a summers day stood amongst sun ripened vine fruit, somewhere on the continent. Conception came after a day of sipping excellent wines and eating freshly baked bread. My romantic imaginings aside, I really believe that this wine bar is a vision of where passion meets profession. It's clear that the team love wine, love food and love having guests in to share in the experience. 28 - 50 WWK have made good wine accessible to everybody , by selling oral explosions by the glass (small or large), by carafe and of course by the bottle. The prices are exceptional for the quality of wine and the space is stunning. Beautifully yet dimly lit -the warming allure invites passerby's to gaze in through the floor to celling windows, at the horseshoe shaped bar centrepiece. I haven't yet tried the food here so I have awarded 4 stars for now, which leaves me room to grant the final star when I do. I have little doubt that 28 - 50 WWK's culinary skills will let me down. read more

28-50 is a mix of wine bar and restaurant and is part of a collaboration between sommelier Xavier Rousset and chef Agnar Sverrisson. They also work together on the more upscale and fine dining restaurant Texture (Michelin starred). They currently of three locations of 28-50 and this is my favorite one. The space is very nice with large windows and it gives a more spacious feel. It is also very relaxed and calm which is surprising as it is not far from the often crowded Oxford street. What has really made me like this place is both the large selection fo wine s by the glass and the food. The service can be a bit hit and miss but in general it is rather good. The wine is clearly a focus area here and there are always at least 3-4 sparkling wines by the glass as well as around 10 each of reds and whites by the glass. These days they also do some rather expensive wines by the glass using the Coravin system. The staff are in general knowledgeable and happy to make recommendatiins. I also like that it is possible to order small glasses of wine as well. The food was the big surprise here, not that it is innovative but that some of the dishes have been so good. I especially love the onglet steak, it is just perfectly juicy, very flavorful and to make it better one if the cheaper options on the menu. I have also on other occassions tried the pork cheek (very nice) and the burger which ws also good but not great. Dessert sand starters have been very nice as well so I would say that they deliver on the food and the quality is better than at other restaurants in the same price range. I have been several times and will probably return. It is by far the best of the 28-50 locations so if in the mood for some wine and food try it out. read more

28-50's second branch is, for me, a big step forward on its original Fetter Lane location. First, and probably most importantly the restaurant/wine bar has ground floor space with huge windows allowing light to spill into the bar and dining area. It is hard to over estimate how important that is to the dining experience - particularly during the day. Second, the kitchen has stepped up its game. Each of our courses was beautifully presented (especially the asparagus salad and gazpacho starters) and also delivered in terms of flavour. The one element which hasn't changed (a good thing) is the wine list. In excess of 40 wines are available by the glass from the main list and a second list provides an excellent array of older vintages at a higher price point. Thankfully, a knowledgeable sommelier is on hand to guide you to a choice which will match your meal. It opens officially on 4 June with a soft opening until then. It therefore has scope to improve further once it gets into full swing. This bodes well for the future as it is already hitting many great notes. read more

I figured a place like this the house selection should be reasonably good and it is. If you fancy more of a tasting, they have varying sizes starting from 75cl (isn't that like a ssip?), carafes and full bottles. I had the onglet and for once... I had a perfectly cooked medium rare steak in London! I was debating how to get it cooked as I usually order it rare in London as it tends to be overcooked anyway. I love the glass, the light, the decoration, the staff, all the wine boxes and bottles, I love the wine selection and the fact, they are happy to do tasting and talk you throughout everything and happily! My friend discovered this wine bar and after checking it out last night, I'm very glad she did. Not only does this bar have a very chic ambiance, their wine list is varied and offers multiple sizes, including 75 ml, allowing one to enjoy many different wines if their heart isn't set on just one or two. This quite honestly was my favorite part, as it is rare to have that option these days. I was able to enjoy a very varied palate of exquisite flavors of white wines. Not a fan of white? No worries - they offer an extensive red wine list. I believe I saw a few rosés on the menu as well. The prices are a bit higher than your average glass of wine, but you're paying for the quality. Also, there's more than one bar in London - they offer locations in Marylebone, Mayfair and the Bank area. I will definitely be returning in the near future. read more

My roommate invited me to this place because she was glad she found someone who enjoy wine as well. Well, as a French girl it's kind of an obligation, isn't it ? But I was glad to discover a new place and was curious to see which kind of wines they had. First, let me say that the place is gorgeous. Many lamps, nice wooden wine boxes against the wall, a central bar... Very fancy ! Second, the staff is really friendly. No surprise here, most of them are French ! They perfectly know their stuff, and give you advices with a touch of humour. I had two glasses of wine, the first one was a Spanish white wine, not too bad but not sweet enough for my taste. Then one of the waiter served me red wine, and I began to laugh a little bit : I'm really not a red wine fan. But guess what : it was the most perfect red wine I ever had ! I really loved it ! First time here this weekend, for "dunch"... (apparently a new trend... replacing brunch when you're meeting up with someone in between lunch and dinner). Great atmosphere, lot's of natural light, and of course, wine, wine, wine. Started off with the Argentinian Malbec, which, I must say, was a bit disappointing, but opened up after a while. However, the Crozes Hermitage was absolutely luscious, and we had 2 bottles of that... to accompany the very tasty lamb shoulder and half roasted chicken. The plateau de fromages was excellent, and we devoured into it like the Frenchmen that we are... lol. The creme brulee was good, but not he best I've ever had. They like to draw some comparison between this place and Texture not too far away... to be honest, Texture is obviously a class apart (michelin star oblige), and the fare here is far more ordinary and less researched. We had a table for two by the window which wasn't too close to other people and it wasn't very loud, so it was absolutely perfect for catching up. The food is good. To start, we ordered two dishes of quick bites - hummus and bread, and chorizo sausage. All had wonderful flavours, but the portion is a bit stingy. For example, there were only three bits of chorizo sausages the size of one's thumb, leaving one craving for more. For main, I had the rib eye steak which comes with a very small pot of sauce and a few salad leaves. Sides are extras. Again, great flavours, but small portions. The service was OK. When our steaks and chips/fries came, we weren't offered any sauces. The waitresses were diligent about topping off our wine glasses from the bottle, but never asked us how we were enjoying the food or if we needed anything. I had to ask twice for tomato sauce, which was ice cold and came in a small pot. All in all, the food was good but for the price it wasn't the perfect experience. read more

The World Cup allowed me to get a table here, I think. Normally when I walk by it's full and even as a solo diner (because I am a loser like that) they can't fit me in. This past Monday, I had my choice of like 10 tables...which is impressive considering I think they only have like 15 tables. I didn't count. That's just my Rainman assessment. No wine for me at the wine workshop. I know that's kind of weird but I was just there for the workshop. Actually not even that. Just the kitchen. I had a prawn cocktail that severely fell short of my expectations, but mostly because I forgot that prawn in the UK are sometimes those tiny little bay shrimps that no one likes. It was weak but I blame the country, not the kitchen. My main was a salmon and it was listed under some other name that started with a G. Everyone in the place called it the salmon. Makes sense. Side of potatoes. Decent. Side of carrots. Awesome. I'd come back, maybe. Love the look of the place. I wonder if it loved the look of me? There are not many dishes that stay in my mind to haunt me, that I crave for almost every day. The Onglet at 28-50 is one of them. I almost dare to say I enjoyed it more than the lovely chunks of beef I have had at Hawksmoor. The restaurant its self is located just a few blocks away from the the buzz off Oxford street. Its central, yet not in the main tourist flow. The space is in a narrow corner of the building with glass walls and soft lighting. Very nice for long lunches and mood-lit dinners. The ambiance is friendly and inviting. About the food. The menu is not short but not long either, just the way I like it. Some 5 to 6 options for starters, mains and desserts. There are also some nibbles you can order either as a starter, or if you have stopped over to sip the wines. I went for some yummy caramelized pork as a starter (from the nibbles list). Simple, yet very tasty, well prepared pieces of pork belly smeared in a caramel sauce. For the main, I had "the" onglet I was going on about earlier. It was fabulous! A great, medium-rare, piece of meat with thick Bernaise sauce and some fried onion. The meat was tender and perfectly cooked to being almost raw in the middle, but still warm. And it cost less than 15£ (wtf). For my dessert I had the ginger panna cotta. It was served with blood orange and house granola. It was fresh and not too sweet. All food was served in generous portions, and I was stuffed after the meal. Me and my date are not huge eaters, so later we cursed that we could have shared the starter and the dessert (we always say that but we never do). About the drinks: The great thing about this restaurant is that they also serve small 750ml glasses of wine. So for a taste-greedy girl like me, its perfect. We had a nice glass of champagne to start with. It was very good and decently priced (8 something £). I like it when the aperatives don't cost you an arm and a leg, as a glass of bubbly or a drink is such a nice way to start a dinner. We also had a few different red wines with the main and dessert. It was fun to taste several without getting drowsy. About the service: It was very friendly. The staff were attentive but not hovering around. The space seems easy to control, so we did not need to seek eye-contact very long to get the attention of a waiter. We did not test the wine-knowledge that much apart from asking some recommendations with the main dish. But I can imagine these guys are very knowledgeable and it would be fun to sit at the bar and do a bit of tasting. I will most definitely try hard to become a regular here! read more

This restaurant/wine bar is located in a little side street near Oxford Street, not far away from St Christopher's Place. We only had drinks and the corner location and the floor to ceiling windows give a lovely view onto Marylebone Lane, while one is chatting away at the bar in the centre of the room. The whole design is elegant and sophisticated. I have to say that I really liked the feel of it and the staff was amazingly friendly, even a bit over eager to get ones order. The advice given by the waitress in regards to wine was spot on and really helpful. The prices on the varied wine list ranges from normal to outrageous and one can order testers, normal glasses or a bottle. So there is something for everyone. read more
