I have lived in Summit since 2010 and regret only now discovering Sandra. I am going to a Mardi Gras ball in New Orleans in a week and haven't been able to find a dress that fits the way I want. I bought several dresses online and the one I thought I wanted is beautiful but too long. It is beaded and I was worried it would take more than a week to hem it so I planned on going to a seamstress in Union that I normally use. I planned on taking all of the dresses with me so that I could get her advice on which one was the easiest and cheapest to fix, given my timeline. As I looked for the address of the seamstress I normally use, I found Sandra's name on Google. When I saw her great reviews and her proximity to me, I called her and was immediately impressed. She had me come right over, and we discussed the alterations that would be needed on the dress I thought I preferred. Although she could do the work within a week, she helped me realize it was a better value to wear a different dress that didn't need alterations, which saved me money. She took her time to help me, even thought it didn't result in her providing me an alteration! She helped me in one other way - the dress I will end up wearing is too short for the heels I already have, so I was going to have to buy new shoes. Sandra also carries shoes for sale, much to my surprise. I ended up purchasing a great pair of low-heel sandals for only $99 - much cheaper and much better quality than what I was seeing online. I am really happy to have met Sandra and to have her now as my trusted seamstress. don't normally leave reviews but I do think this one may be important to share. I came across Sandra through a Google search and saw all the amazing reviews, so immediately wanted to come in and discuss having both my wedding and reception dress altered. I will say she was very knowledgeable in understanding the construction of each gown and explaining what she would have to do in order to alter them to my body. The price she gave seemed kind of high, but of course not having any knowledge of the industry, I gave her the deposit for each dress and left. After doing some research and talking to some other brides in the area, I did in fact realize her pricing was EXTREMELY higher than others in the North Jersey area. Unfortunately, my father who had agreed to pay for alterations wasn't comfortable with paying that much, so I emailed her asking if she had started working on my dresses, because if not, I'd like to have them back. She did say she started working on my main dress but didn't begin the reception dress which was fine, I told her I would just take that dress and she can work on my main dress. As my first fitting came to an end and I brought up my reception dress, she stated that she felt the need to "charge me" because she had taken scissors to my dress to cut where to hem my gown. I understood and said, that should come out of the deposit I gave you for this dress, and she insisted that it should be a separate and additional amount. I wanted to say how ABNORMAL that is being that the deposit I gave her was a sum of each deposit amount for each dress. Nevertheless, I agreed, and just asked for assurance that the total amount I have already given her would be applied to the dress she was in fact working on, and we ran the numbers. Then when I asked her the cost for taking shears to my dress and cutting the bottom, she told me $200. Again, this number is so high in my opinion, but as a business owner myself I didn't want to disrespect her pricing and paid. Then on my final visit, I put my gown on and ask for assistance zipping up, and she says, blunt and matter of fact "It won't go up, you must have gained weight". To which I replied "I haven't, I've lost 7lbs since you last saw me", and then she gets the zipper up. I will say the alterations she did do were very nice and I didn't have an issue with them besides the fact that she forgot to sew on the buttons for my detachable sleeves, and then admitted to loosing them, and had to use her own. But what truly made me uncomfortable with that final interaction was when she asked if I was putting my dress on at the venue and stressing how my zipper might even "burst" open when I sat down. And I had my mom look through images that we took at my previous appointments with her and even when I first got my dress and it has always fit me the same. My mom felt as though she was trying to upsell us into taking out my dress, but that was her perception. I just feel as though as a bride weight is already such a sensitive topic, there are ways to talk about it, and to bring it up in an accusatory manner, when I know for a fact I lost weight was incredibly inappropriate. So with all that said, I can't say I recommend coming here for your alterations. Throughout my whole experience I felt like I was being taken advantage of. read more

I called Sandra on a Friday about an hour before her closing time. I told her I needed my gown altered for my daughter's wedding. I gave her the date I needed it by and she said to come in by Monday or this same day I called and she would wait for me. So I arrive on Friday around 4 pm. All I needed was the the top of the shoulders taken up a bit, a bra cup fitted inside and to shorten it. She told me it will cost $545. I thought that seemed outrageous. I told her I paid less than that for my gown I got in NY as a showroom sample. I asked if I could give her an answer by Monday (the same Monday on the call she said was ok) and she said NO and that I needed to tell her now if I was giving her the job. So..I left. Update from my first review after my second bridal dress fitting with Sandra and thrilled to say my dress fit perfectly with no further adjustments, only finished needed. All expectations from my first visit were exceeded and trying on my wedding dress and seeing it fit for the first time more than a year after buying it was the moment I needed in the final stretch of wedding planning. After hearing from multiple friends who all had bad experiences with their bridal salons in-house alterations, I'm so glad my wedding dress is the one thing that hasn't been stressful. I've been a client of Sandra's since she first started her business out of a basement apartment in Brooklyn about 7 years ago. After 2 complex alterations on my dresses, I knew she had a marvelous talent and trusted her completely. About a year or two later, in 2012, I had my retro-style wedding dress custom made in Bali . They had nothing to go on but my measurements that I had taken myself and sent to them by email. Everyone thought I was nuts because the dress wouldn't be sent to me until a week before my wedding and they couldn't understand why I wasn't concerned. I knew the dress wouldn't be quite right (it was worse than I imagined!), but I also knew I could count on Sandra to make the final alterations. I'm petite and my dress was made for a much taller person. The waist was all off and the bust too loose. The bolero jacket that went with the dress had sleeves about 4 inches too wide. Sandra did her magic and I had a perfectly fitting, amazing dress before my wedding. She is meticulous in her work and will keep cutting, adding, nipping and tucking until your dress is perfect. Sandra and I got to know each other a bit and she told me she was trained for design. Her creative and stylish sketches were awesome - I even bought one of her samples before her labels were made and I am proud to own a Sandra Elizabeth Diaz original!
