    Campground #18

Simple first come first serve campground. Non flushing toilets but they were maintained as best as they can be. Come early to grab a water front site. It is right off of 50 some at times the traffic can be loud but nothing crazy.

Second year of coming here. The people who run it are so nice. There are no amenities like hook-ups, cable or electricity but it's nice, it's inexpensive and the water is beautiful to watch. They have restrooms and running water (not at the campsite). I like the open space and all the trees. It is next to the freeway so depending on the spot you get you might hear freeway noise. I imagine after a holiday weekend the restrooms might be yucky but it's camping. No flushing toilets. I have a trailer so I'm a happy camper.

Im really disappointed this year because past years have been so great at Sand Flat but the whole vibe has changed and Im not sure Ill ever go back. Used to be rules that people just followed out of common respect for others there enjoying the beauty but that all flew out the windows with the people coming in thinking we all wanted to hear music blasting away all day and night. Or that we wanted to watch people (for the first time ever)bathing in the clean water thats on its way down to Placerville in the aqua duct going up behind the campground. Im gonna find a new place to enjoy my Sierras and the peace and quiet it offers. Sand Flat has lost its appeal to me so Ill move on. See ya George.

I was expecting to camp at China Flat off of Silver Fork Road last weekend but it was closed. Even the the NFS office said it was open. So I either had to find another campground or camp in the forest. Since I didn't have a fire permit I had to find a campground. I drove past Sand Flat but the sign also said closed. However, I could see tents and trailers down by the river so I took a chance. Yep, the campground was officially closed, but you could still stay. For FREE. However, there was no water or garbage service. Oh No! How tragic is that! So I selected a spot, which was right on the South Fork of the American River, and made camp. The site, while on the main loop, is private since there is a bridge between it and other sites on one side. the number will stay my secret. Maybe when you go you'll find it based on my description. There are plenty of water spigots, for when water is running, and a few pit toilets available. As usual, no reservations, pets are allowed, and they sell firewood at the camp host. Right down the street is Kyburz where you can get gas and groceries. Some of the sites would be awesome in the hot summer as they back right up against the river. Although it may be dangerous when the river is running full. I'd love to come back here in the summer but it may need to be a mid-week visit as I would expect this place to fill up quick and early. Oh yeah, this is bear country but there are no bear boxes. Plan on storing your food in the car.

    The water is Crystal clear.

This was such a great campground for families and people looking to unwind. We booked campsite #43…read morethat had tons of extra space, a large driveway big enough for 3-cars, close to showers and bathrooms. There were six of us with 3 tents, but we could have easily fit three more tents. There were multiple bathrooms nearby, plenty of water spigots, and showers nearby. The showers are pretty expensive; $4.00 will only get 3-minutes of shower time and it only takes quarters. This campsite is on a peninsula that's technically over a reservoir, not a lake, but it does not feel like reservoir. The body of water itself is huge and the surroundings are gorgeous. My family and I did multiple hikes around the lake and saw all kinds of wildlife like hawks, squirrels, tadpoles, and lots of coyote tracks. One day we went fishing and saw what it looked like bear scratchings at the base of a tree. See my pictures. We even caught a glimpse of a few eagles near our campsite. A handful of spots were blocked off because it was a nesting area for the eagles. Our favorite spot by far was hanging out on Fashoda Beach, which is a man-made beach area. They've removed all the sharp rocks and put in sand and buoys to keep boats out of it. It's essentially like a giant bay that's kids safe for swimming. I am more of "glamper", but I really enjoyed this campsite with all of its rustic features. I could definitely see myself coming back here with my family for annual camping trips, and I highly suggest coming here at the beginning of summer because the weather was perfect with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. Plus, there weren't many people out here for the summer yet. Did I mention I still had 5G access to my phone, score!

But this is not a good choice if you are looking for peace and quiet. The leash rules are not enforced and dogs are running around making trouble, people are being pretty loud until around 11-12 at night and the steel bathroom doors are slamming, and there are lots of loud jet skis on the lake during the day. It might be worth a try in the off season.

The entire Federal Campground consists of spacious campsites intermingled underneath massive canopies of sugar pines, Cedar of Lebanon, and other deciduous trees: The Cosumes River softly babbles, emitting soothing water sounds in the not too far distance from our campsite which evokes a sense of calmness, peacefulness, and exuding a meditative quality not too many campgrounds comparatively possesses especially, CA State's Folsom Lake's Beals, Peninsula, Donner Lake, and Lake Tahoe Campgrounds which are disappointingly raucous, obnoxiously loud music blaring from portable boom boxes, and egregiously inconsiderate with the utmost abandon, people partying all night. Sad. Despite the fact the CA State Parks has its incessant noise pollution, PiPi Campground is directly the opposite: It's so quiet, you can hear your heart and blood pulsating, you can hear insects buzzing and whirring by you, you can hear the soft breeze echoing surrounding the PiPi Campground while the deciduous trees offers wafting fresh, sweet pine scents lulling you into the deepest REM dreamland possible . . . Here, you won't have to contend with large crowds. It appears that the campgrounds near the Blue Lakes were not open this season due to some damage from the record high snow from last winter. Granite Lake was quite full to the point where the ground surrounding the lake was pretty saturated with moisture. For this reason, camping there even late in September this year would be too damp. Keep this place on your radar for future, dryer years.

Oh my! :) As an added bonus we encountered a snow field large enough to sled which members of my group tried. However for late July I think this is a rare find. There was one very small stream cross that required a hop. And in this area there quite a few mosquitoes. The trail isn't entirely flat as there are a few areas that require stepping up/down. Otherwise the trail is relatively easy. We hit the trail around 9:30 AM and returned around noon when it was getting warm. We saw many leashed dogs on the trail which was cool. The trail head is on the south side of highway 88 at Carson Pass. There is a parking lot there with a small visitor center and pit toilets. The day fee is $5/vehicle.
