Wright lake in Eldorado National Forest is roughly 4 to 5 hours from the San Francisco Bay Area, or 2 hours drive from Sacramento by car. There are many beautiful camping sites and It's well worth the commute. Wrights Lake Campground is situated in the timber belt, close to the lake shore, looking up at the majestic rocky peaks of the Sierra Nevadas and Desolation Wilderness. The area is well-known for its hiking, wildflowers and birding. The campground offers dozens of campsites for tent and RV camping. Eldorado is home to two designated wilderness areas: Desolation Wilderness and Mokelumne Wilderness. It's my favorite place to pass when I headed to Barrett lake four-wheel-drive trail. The trail typically opens late spring and is only open for a few months, usually closing around mid October. Wright Lake is about 15 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Pollock Pines, California. To get to Barrett lake trail, you must be good with ohv/off road driving! Otherwise, just stay by Wright lake like most people would! Incredible, magical and happy! Check it out! You won't be disappointed!

I ALMOST don't want to write a review of Wrights Lake because I don't want more people to find out about it! But it's too beautiful a place to not share. Came here last July and somehow the camping gods were on our side and we randomly got 2 amazing spots right across from each other (don't count on that though - make sure you reserve early!) The drive in is fairly long but nothing crazy; I made it in my Prius so it can't be that bad. The lake itself is beyond words. It was cold but refreshing, and it's super shallow. We kayaked out to the middle and were able to get out and walk around. At night we could see the stars reflecting onto the water and I'm not a sappy person but I just about cried (also might have been the amount of alcohol I had consumed but that's neither here nor there). The only downside is we were swarmed by mosquitoes so BRING BUG SPRAY! Just look at the picture below. If that doesn't convince you to go then you don't belong outdoors.

Just returned from Wrights Lake for a weekend of camping that was the most memorable of this summer season. If you are a tent only camper, try to get to or reserve a site in the tent-only loop - sites 1 to 19. We stayed in site 10 and loved it. Probably one of the largest sites we have camped in. All have a picnic table, fire ring, grill and new bear box. None of the sites are lake front, but the crystal clear lake is a very short walk away. There are also numerous picnic tables and grills that afront the lake. This campground is more for families or couples, as most sites were dark and quiet by 10:30 pm, and surprisingly, were still quiet at 8:30 the next morning! But, the tall trees, with the wind through them, and the picturesque lake is all one could want from a weekend away from it all. Note, the El Dorado County website says to take 50 E to Ice House Road, then on to 32 then 4. We took that way there, but it is very windy and slow. We found that taking 50E to Wrights Road 8 miles to the campground was much faster and easier (as we did on the way home).

the campground roads can be a little narrow

Wrights lake is one the best, if not the best, camping spots we have gone to. I almost don't want to talk about it because if it gets anymore popular it will be too hard to get a reservation next summer. Wrights Lake is South of Lake Tahoe on highway 50. It is a smalll high mountain lake that only accepts non-motorized boats on the lake. There are two camping areas. One for only tent campers and the other for both tent and RV campers. We stayed for a complete week at the lake in mid-August and spent every day either canoeing or playing in or around the lake. There are many hiking trails that lead up into the Desolation Wilderness that we didn't have time for (next year for sure). And talking with people who have hiked the trails it is a fantastic hike. If you are traveling with an RV definitely only use the Icehouse road to the campground. Wrights Lake road is way too narrow and scary to attempt. View of the snow capped mountains

It is off the beaten path and then off that path, however for those of you who elect to go to the enchanted ponds from wright's lake you will be rewarded. This is an I maintained trail so follow gps but so worth it. Sit by the waterfall and enjoy

Ask the Community - Wrights Lake

I was wondering if there is any phone service- My work demands me to stay connected unfortunately? I have Verizon.

I have T-Mobile. I didn't check the coverage often, but I also didn't notice not having it.

Is there a day use fee? How's the kayaking?

Yes, not alot of parking though and no trailer parking

Are hiking trails open at this time of year - May 15th?

    Unsure

Here, you won't have to contend with large crowds. It appears that the campgrounds near the Blue Lakes were not open this season due to some damage from the record high snow from last winter. Granite Lake was quite full to the point where the ground surrounding the lake was pretty saturated with moisture. For this reason, camping there even late in September this year would be too damp. Keep this place on your radar for future, dryer years.

Oh my! :) As an added bonus we encountered a snow field large enough to sled which members of my group tried. However for late July I think this is a rare find. There was one very small stream cross that required a hop. And in this area there quite a few mosquitoes. The trail isn't entirely flat as there are a few areas that require stepping up/down. Otherwise the trail is relatively easy. We hit the trail around 9:30 AM and returned around noon when it was getting warm. We saw many leashed dogs on the trail which was cool. The trail head is on the south side of highway 88 at Carson Pass. There is a parking lot there with a small visitor center and pit toilets. The day fee is $5/vehicle. Looking down at the other mountain peaks made me realize that if I had ever used the word "breathtaking" to describe anything else before, I was surely mistaken. Just a few ways to describe the view and the feeling of accomplishment after hiking Horsetail Falls and scaling Pyramid Peak = awe-inspiring, hair-raising, heart-stopping, and overwhelmingly thrilling! Simply amazing. I just can't believe that I did it! (sigh) There are many ways to get up to Pyramid Peak and if you like, you can drive half of the way up on the backside but my favorite way is one of the hardest ways to get to the top. You have to start at the bottom and hike all the way up. You can park by Twin Bridges right off of Hwy 50 and pay a small fee for parking. You will also need a day permit unless you choose to backpack and stay overnight, in which case you'll need an overnighter permit. The first half of the hike is the Horsetail Falls trail. Depending on which variation of that trail you choose, there will be moments of a gradual climb and moments of practically rock-climbling. On a hiking scale, this trail has been rated a level 5 (very difficult) in some areas but there are definitely more moderate alternatives. Tips: - If you want to make it to the top of Horsetail Falls to proceed onto Pyramid Peak, and back to the base before sunset, you better hit the trails no later than 7-8am in the morning. - Take into strong consideration the people that you're hiking with. This will determine pace and possibly cause your group to split into two once at the top of Horsetail Falls. One group will choose to journey up to the top of Pyramid Peak (another couple of hours of hard-core hiking and climbing) and another group will stay behind to re-coop. Every time I've hiked this peak, we have split into two groups. - Wear GOOD hiking boots (that are well broken into), dress light (bring a windbreaker or trash bag for the wind & snow at the top), and bring a water bottle and water filter. - Do not hit this trail without wearing serious sunscreen and a good hat. Everyone gets burned at the top! Also, if you know that you're going to do this hike, do yourself and everyone else a favor by physically preparing for it. You are going to be hiking and climbing ALL day! The Horsetail Falls hike will take at least 3-4 hours (sometimes 5 hours depending on your group) and the Pyramid Peak stretch will be another couple of hours. Then, you have to hike back down and while it is faster, it's much harder on your knees. Regardless of the shape that you're in, this hike WILL humble you. It's not for those who wake up one morning and decide - I am going to do a killer hike today! If you do that, you will pay the price and probably not see the top of Pyramid Peak. The first time a group of us hiked Pyramid Peak was several years ago. We opted to drop-in through Echo Lake, took a boat ride across to the western side, and backpacked down towards the top of Horsetail Falls, which is also the base of Pyramid Peak. After whipping-out our sleeping bags, we crashed. Needless to say, no one had trouble falling asleep. In the morning, we ate and hit the trails! I'll never forget that first Pyramid Peak Hike. If you don't want to carry a windbreaker with you, a trash bag is a great alternative. It gets chilly towards the top of the peak (wind + snow), so you can turn the trash bag into a pullover. Quick and easy! And when you head back down from the top, the trash bag turns into a great butt cover for sliding down the snow! It's awesome! The following years, we decided to camp in the Sierra's before heading to Horsetail Falls. Since we had a big group, our goal was to hit the trail by 7ish. I've done this hike more than a handful of times but I learn something new every single time. Additionally, I discover new scenery that I didn't notice the year before. Some years, I was in decent shape and other years, I thought I was going to collapse from exhaustion. It's a crazy hike but also, wonderfully rewarding! As my military Dad often said to me when I was growing-up - No pain, no gain! It builds character! It'll put hair on your chest! Uhhhh, I can do without that last one!
