On the industrial southern edge of Fargo, shadowed by the towering silhouette of the Flying J, sits…read moreThe Windbreak. It is a venue that makes no apologies for its scale or its mission. While other spots in town vie for the title of most "artisanal," The Windbreak is content to be the region's high-decibel living room--a cavernous, newly remodeled sanctuary where the floor is built for dancing and the bar is built for efficiency. The Economy of Joy In an era where a movie ticket and a popcorn can trigger a minor financial crisis, The Windbreak offers a staggering return on investment. The cover charge--often a modest $5 or $10--grants entry to a lineup of the region's hardest-working rock and country bands. It is arguably the best entertainment value in the Red River Valley; for the price of a fancy coffee, you secure a front-row seat to a light show and a sound system that would feel at home in a much larger city. The Pour The philosophy at the bar is refreshingly straightforward. This is not the place for meticulously peeled citrus garnishes or artisanal ice spheres. * The Drink: When you order a Jack and Coke here, you receive what can only be described as a "heavy pour." It is a drink served with the generous hand of a bartender who knows you're there for a long set, not a chemistry lesson. It is honest, potent, and perfectly suited to the room's high-energy vibration. The Room and the Ritual The space itself is sprawling. A recent remodel has expanded the dance floor to a massive 500 square feet, providing ample territory for the "two-steppers" and the "head-bangers" alike. Flanking the stage are pockets of activity--blackjack tables where the focus is intense, and pool tables where the click of the break provides a rhythmic counterpoint to the bass guitar. The Human Tapestry Perhaps the most compelling aspect of The Windbreak is the crowd. On any given Saturday night, the demographic is a true cross-section of the North: corporate executives fresh off a flight, local agricultural workers, university students, and retirees who have been coming since the doors first opened. It is a rare "no-judgment zone" where the only requirement for entry is an appreciation for live music and a decent drink. All types are not just present; they are welcome. The Verdict The Windbreak is a testament to the enduring power of the American roadhouse. It is big, loud, and unapologetically fun. It doesn't ask you to be anyone other than who you are, provided you're ready to have a good time. For those seeking the pulse of Fargo's nightlife without the pretense, the search begins and ends on 39th Street.

How have I waited so long to do a review for Front Street? Good grief! This place is easily one of…read morethe best bars in Fargo-Moorhead. The staff are friendly, the local tap selection is always on-point and the vibe is always super chill. In no particular order, here are a few of my favorite things about Front Street: - EXCELLENT TRIVIA (Tuesdays): As an avid trivia fan, I've played just about everywhere in town and it's hard to find a place that has not only a solid game-pace but also a great variety of questions... Front Street is that place. - VINYL VIBES (Wednesdays and Sundays): In short, it's pretty cool to have a DJ spinning tunes from all genres & eras of music. - LIVE MUSIC (Thursday - Saturday): Looking for the best of local musicians and traveling acts? Front Street is an awesome spot to listen to live tunes in an environment that gives you space to actually enjoy the music. - EVENT SPACE: Between the upstairs and the cellar, Front Street has multiple options for events of all sizes. Looking for the perfect place for your office Christmas gathering, friends-of-friends Halloween party, a casual happy hour? I guarantee it, Front Street will deliver. Takeaway: this is one of my favorite places in Fargo. Do yourself a favor and stop by to check it out.

I had told her I had wanted to make it to four breweries but time was running out so if I could only get to two which should they be? Madness congeals in this place…read more I encountered a stranger, here, who may have been on the run from the law. Earlier that night, in a moment of telestic rage, he had thrown a violin over the counter of a nearby bar, causing significant damage to its glasswares. When pressed about what had possessed him to do this, he laughed, and explained that it had been an act of performance art. He then described to me the geometry of the universe, and how it related to progressive metal as a genre. As he did so, the depth of his pupils extended beyond the breadth of his skull. Years later, I spotted him again, in Ax-Man Surplus in St. Paul. Despite the brevity of our previous encounter, I could never forget his face. He did not remember this particular incident, but confessed that it sounded like something he would have done at that point in his life. He was one of many. There, I played chess with a trembling folk musician who begged me for game after game to take his mind off "something terrible he had just done." I spoke with an oracle whose mind trailed behind her tongue as she told me that I had been abandoned by fate. I wrote a novel alongside a former lucid dreamer, who had been barred from his capabilities after violating the laws of unconsciousness. The service here is good, but coffee shops are not defined by the quality of their beans, or the particular skills of their baristas- while these play a role in our pleasures, they are by no means paramount. They are instead spaces where we demand to be disconnected and productive, until happenstance convinces us otherwise. Alongside espresso, we purchase challenges to our own presence, inviting an ambient reality to transform solitude into something else. This place will accept your invitation. It will seep through the sagittal fissure of your skull, then drip downward like candle wax until it coalesces in your solar plexus. All excess sanity will be dissolved, leaving behind only what you need.

Located in the downtown district, this is a hopping area with many surrounding bars, restaurants, coffee shops and shopping spaces. Jasper Hotel is pet friendly which is a huge win!!! If you're seeking out pet friendly hotels, check this one out. It's certainly upscale, clean and lovely. The main level lobby has a pool table, comfy couch seating, chess board, books, plants, complimentary water station, clean bathrooms, Rosewild, bar, coffee stop, small snack area and gifts such as branded coffee mugs and umbrellas. Each time I have entered Jasper Hotel, the staff has been complimentary and kind. Had I not had an Air b n b, I would certainly consider Jasper Hotel considering I have two dogs. Bravo on accommodating dogs, Jasper. After all, they are part of the family too.

I loved the room, I had a King side bed and it was sooo comfortable! The bathroom was spacious and there was a cute little coffee bar, fridge, closet and work desk. Everything was out together really well and I loved how bright and airy the room was. I also really liked their fitness and sauna rooms. Like wow!! Most hotels don't invest in these things while Jasper Hotel did the opposite -- they invested heavy here and also chose top quality products. I wish I had that fitness room and sauna room at my house lol. The front desk staff were also really very kind and nice. I liked there was a bar/restaurant on the main floor right by check in too. And they had a pool table on the main floor too!! So much to do, the space was utilized perfectly. Fair pricing and so clean and airy. I'll be back when I'm in Fargo again.

The burger selection is honestly impressive. With 50+ specialty burgers on the menu, there's something for everyone--from classic builds to bold creations piled high with unique toppings. The quality of the beef stands out: juicy, flavorful, and cooked just right. Even the buns hold up well against the towering stacks. Beyond burgers, they've got solid appetizers (the fried pickles and cheese curds are local favorites), good wings, and a wide beer selection featuring regional and national brews. Portion sizes are generous, so come hungry. Service is typically friendly and fast-paced, even when it's busy--which it often is. It's a popular spot for a reason. Overall: Great food, fun atmosphere, and tons of variety. If you love creative burgers and a lively setting, Sickies Garage in Fargo delivers.

For an appetizer, I ordered the cheese curds, they were hot, but very average. Not bad, not great, just your standard bar-style curds. For my meal, I decided to try something different and went with the donut burger. Definitely an odd combo, but it was fun to try while in town. Flavor-wise, it was fine, unique, but not something I'd order again. The mac and cheese side, though, was a miss. Easily one of the weakest parts of the meal. I'm not sure why so many restaurants struggle with mac and cheese but still feel confident charging extra for it. On the bright side, the $5 happy hour drinks were great, generous pours and a solid bartender. Overall, this place is your average, run-of-the-mill sports bar. Nothing special, but not bad if you're just looking for a casual spot to grab a drink and a bite.
