I ADORE that small creators and artists are able to set up, sell and showcase their creations, hobbies and interests at any given day. Went on a Monday but still saw stands where they sold cookies in forms of iconic characters (Hello Kitty, Anime, etc), stickers (3 for $10 pesos (=0.50 USD cents, what a deal!), books, wood carvings, musicians, gems, art, etc, etc. It's a nice little display of a taste of the cultural heart Tijuana holds. Also saw these Hello Kitty ponchos and thought they were the cutest things!!! I love that this area is still open and thriving for all after all these years.

If you are driving, getting across the border to get home on the San Diego side can take up to 3…read morehours. It is a royal pain otherwise we would be there a lot. We used to, but all changed after 9/11. But once there, go to Avenida Revolucion Street. It is crowded as heck, but lots of fun. Now, your wallet is in your front pocket, your back pack is well sealed and no you don't want to buy junk from the street vendors. You never pay full price there, except at the eateries and there are some great ones--DO NOT drink the water. Have soda. There are some super places to eat there. I do eat the street tacos, my husband refuses because their hands are not super clean. I risk it and have never gotten sick. They have so many stores, but a lot of the bags are fake so be careful. They have some great fake bags, but if you think you are getting a Hermes bag for 5K you have lost your mind. The pharmacies are great. You can get your scripts filled there for less, much less, than the US and they have stuff you don't need a scrip for, but go to a real pharmacy there, not some dump or who knows what you will get. Don't be stupid. Don't get plastered and act like a stupid American. You may find yourself in jail. Follow the street signs. Everyone is super nice. The American tourist behavior I find appalling, and I am from the US. Don't just walk around off the main street at night. Do not go to the Red Light District. Just have fun and be nice. You will be treated so well and they love dollars, so don't bother to change currency. Have fun.

This lighthouse sits right along the border, adjacent to Friendship Park, and at the northern end…read moreof the Playas de Tijuana boardwalk. A stone's throw from here is a great place to workout outdoors, with pullup bars and a dip station, overlooking the beach. The long stretch of beach is a great place to go for a jog. Despite what they say in the news back home, this place is not bad at all. There are quite a number of eateries nearby, and also a few places to get an assortment of snacks. This place, and Playas de Tijuana, can be accessed driving along Route 1 (Via Rapida), or driving through Zona Norte (if you find yourself in Tijuana). I recommend the former, as the latter is a dangerous neighborhood. El Faro, and the surrounding area, is a pretty chill spot in which to hang out or to work out. If you find yourself in Baja for a few days, this would be a good place to check out.

About 8 or 9 years ago was the first time that I got the SENTRI pass, (for those of you who don't…read moreknow what that is, it's essentially a fast-access card that allows you to cross the Mexico-US border in a significantly shorter amount of time. Instead of doing a couple of hours in line, you would only wait 20 minutes) However, four years ago this magic card expired,... and I was left with no other option but to wait in line anywhere from two to four hours in line. Oh the tragedy! Luckily, nowadays the line has been significantly shorter. Last time I crossed the border (this morning) there were no more than 5 cars ahead of me. My waiting time was less than 30 minutes. They opened up all lanes, they doubled in border patrol agents, and they're overall more effective and efficient at checking people across. If you're traveling back from Mexico into the US, fear no more! You won't be waiting for long in line. This is in my opinion the best port of entry there is in Tijuana. For an added bonus, you can still do some awesome last minute border shopping. Burritos and Raspados Playas are my favorite items to get when I get the chance to eat some.

Garita de San Ysidro (Mexico Side). Also called Ped East. This was hell on earth type heat. We…read moreoriginally went to re/enter at Ped West and was an hour early and was rerouted here after 38 mins due to the early cut off and turned us away. Then there was the walk over to Garita side San Usidro/PedEast and the heat was intense. By the time we got here the line was wrapped around so rough estimate at around 2pm was going to be about 3+ hours long. After about 30 mins of the line barley moving we paid $30 usd each to hop on a bus via sentri to get expedited transport to the U.S. Customs and Boarders patrol line. Still 30+ mins but we were sitting. If you are crossing during the summer, bring water, wear sunscreen, and have a backup plan. The wait can change quickly, and the heat is no joke. We even had one of those spf umbrellas that we shared but it was still bad. There are a couple shops and vendors you can get beverages from but the line moves so slow. I would also recommend using the restroom before you start the journey.
