San Telmo is an Argentinian steakhouse which is the sister restaurant of Asado. We brought our friends here and the food was so good that we over-ordered! We loved their wine selection and their steak is a definite must-try. The empanadas are amazing as well, we highly recommend it. Please come here with nothing but an empty stomach so you can fill yourself up with all of their signature dishes. The staff are young and vibrant and the atmosphere of the restaurant makes it perfect for catching up with friends or family. We had a wonderful experience and will definitely be back here again!

I was lured inside by the come-hither bar. The dim-lit, lounge atmosphere meant I stayed for dinner. The space is dominated by lashings of brown; leather booths, carved wood, tan leather aprons, cow hides; all very masculine and meaty - like the Argentine cuisine itself! There's also a fancy automatic door entrance to the bathroom, which I thought was a bit cool (simple joys). I was much more taken with the service and ambience than I was with the food and Sangria however. We ordered a grazing plate of cured meats and pickles etc. but it wasn't all that impressive. The signature meaty dishes were outdone by a vegetarian - the grilled zucchini and eggplant should be ordered!

Met the chef at the gym and my trainer showed me pictures of a meal he had there earlier that week. Of course I thought about this pictures all week. Tonight I was able to take my boss there. I am really sorry I got steak the night before as this was amazing. We started with a couple of empanadas that were cooked to perfection. The chef sent us out a complementary sausage that was greatly appreciated and quickly devoured. Then the steaks and salad arrived. We were kind of stuck on whether we should eat the meat or admire it. We solved this dilemma and were rewarded with one of the best steaks we had this year. Don't miss this place when you are in Melbourne.

As a vegetarian dating a non-veg, I was thrilled to find a Argentinian restaurant with so many options for me. The sides and "small plates" are all quite hearty, so I didn't feel like I was missing out while my boy enjoyed his perfectly cooked steak. The dining room wasn't overly loud despite being full - you should definitely make reservations if you want to eat there for dinner. And save room for dessert - the flan topped with salted caramel and peanut brittle was excellent!

Golden empanada award. For good reason!

We enjoyed a beautiful lunch at San Telmo ... and although it was bustling the service was great. We kicked things off with some pickled zucchini, bread, polenta & basil chips and a beef & chorizo empanada. All of them were delicious. We shared a flank steak, lettuce & shallot salad and some crispy potatoes with olives. The steak was cooked perfectly and full flavoured. The potatoes were nice but not crispy. The salad was fresh with a creamy dressing. The dulce de leche cookie was superb. We tried a pisco sour and a rum cocktail that had burnt pineapple in it. Both were very nice. It wasn't our first visit to San Telmo and won't be our last!

We ordered dry aged ribeye 500g $78; lamb asado 200g $30; roasted eggplant, and flatbread. Flatbread was good. I like the spread. Eggplant was too greasy. Lamb was tender and well seasoned. Ribeye was ok considering the price. Here's the kicker: they don't give you a to-go box. Finish everything or watch an expensive piece of meat go to waste. No license for take-out? How hard is it to obtain one? Your customers don't pay you enough to cover legal fees?

Had a nice dinner at San Telemo on Saturday night. We walked in and were sat against the wall. I asked our waitress if we could move to a seat in front of the kitchen when one comes available and she said sure. Luckily one did come available so it was great to sit and watch the kitchen do their work. We started with the Fried provolone cheese ($12) which is always a winner. Fried cheese - I mean CMON! Its the kid of meal that makes your arteries harden but you only live once eh!! Also along with the delicious fried provolone came the Chorizo sausage ($14) which was tender and delicious. Lastly for our entrees came the much anticipated Braised Berkshire pork jowl 'cheek' with crackling ($19). Now those who know me well know I LOVE Pork. Just love it. This dish was... well.. I wouldnt order it again or recommend it to others. Like as written by other food reviewers there was hardly any meat and it was more 'fat' than anything. The pock crackling was overly salty and just... not how my mum used to make. I actually felt a bit sick later in the evening and I think it was due to the fattyness of this dish. A bit of a regret :S. For the main I ordered the Rangers Valley grain fed rump cap 250g ($33) which was a massive fist size hunk of meat sliced. Firstly I noticed that the waitress did not ask how I wanted my meat cooked. I usually go medium rare anyhow. However this meat was practically raw in the middle. I ended up eating the edges (they were delicious and charred) however the middle parts were a bit too raw and chewy for me to finish. Im not a fan of sending food back especially meat for being under-cooked (dont chefs like HATE that?) My dining companion had the special which was a nice steak - cant remember the exact details. Pics are included. Overall lovely night - the place is decorated wonderfully - very cosy place. Service was good... worth a look but avoid the pork :(

    Perfect steak!

Eating here was an impressive experience. The restaurant is super cosy, perfect lighting, tables not too cramped and the service was excellent. The food was amazing too. The ceviche and carpaccio beef starters were fab. The ribs and the steak was amazing as was the potato and cauliflower side dishes. Oh and the Malbec wine was a perfect recommendation. Highly recommended.

This place was recommended to me by a colleague and having never been to an Argentinean restaurant I was quite excited. They take bookings. Hallelujah. Seatings start at 5.45pm and go for two hours. Its tapas style with everything meant to be shared. Even the large portions which are mainly beef steaks, lamb steak, chicken, and market fish (ranging from 35 to $$$$) are quite small and apparently meant to be shared. There are vegetarian options like eggplant, fried cheese, brussel sprouts in the small sized options but none in the large. There are a few salad options but again they are quite small. Vegetarians Will definitely go hungry and end up forking a lot. We ordered the lamb steak, fried provolone cheese, grilled eggplant and polenta fries. All for around 78 dollars. They have an extensive wine menu, a few cocktails starting from 19 dollars, teas, coffees, and a couple of cocktails. Now the verdict. Eggplant was ice cold and we must have got a total portion size of 0.25 measuring cup of ice cold citrus flavoured eggplant. Not happy. Taste average but it was so cold that all I could think about was the arctic circle. Fried cheese came in half a plate with a slice of lemon taking the other half. Stingy much? Was salt and cheesy. Tasted like the greek saganaki. Nothing special. The polenta fries. Well we got four pieces for 15 dollars. Nice but not amazing came with a chipotle like sauce. The lamb was cooked with a bit of pink. Quite chewy. Nice but a whooping 35 dollars for 250g. And it is no wagyu lamb people. Pros Quick service. friendly staff. Take bookings Cons Overpriced Small portion sizes Average food Waited 30 minutes for our single main Ambience Take your date After work drinks Client drinks Don't go here if you're hungry.

We had our end of FY lunch at San Telmo. The place was packed as you'd expect during this time of year and we had to wait quite a bit for our food, which was not ideal as we were all starving but it was worth the wait as it was really nice and tasty. My boss had ordered from a set menu so we had a bit of everything. Some of the dishes that I really liked were the Peruvian style lemon cured white fish with chilli, sweet potato and onion, Chorizo and beef short ribs plus the ookie filled w/ dulce de leche was so good! You'll find San Telmo in Meyers Place - great location w/ Lily Blacks a few doors away if you feel like a good cocktail after.

If you're ever down under, this is a restaurant that you definitely should not miss. The waitresses were friendly and explained the menu to me and were very fast with their service. I sat next to the open kitchen and the cooks took time out of their day to explain their techniques on cooking steak and chicken. Food and decor was excellent. I will be back during my next visit.

Disappointing. Steak was tough and we didn't appreciate a large cross next to the gratuity line on the bill as it was intimidating.

Next up was ceviche with corn and a hint of chilli. Slow roasted pork with orange and empanadas and a nice tomato salsa followed. That was our highlight dish of the night. We loved it. Next course was BBQ steak with chimichurri sauce. BBQ chicken with spicy sauce came next. There were sides as well. Lightly roasted sweet potato with yoghurt and a mixed salad. Dessert was doughnuts with cinnamon honey and chocolate dipping sauce. The decor here is lovely. Stylish with good lighting. The courtyard out the back looked very enticing too. Service was good overall. The staff were pleasant and efficient. The set menu at $55 is good value. It's not fine dining. It's more comfort food but it's good. Nice place. I'd go back for the empanadas.

It was really, really good. The restaurant has a great vibe about it. For some people, they'd love to come in summer when out the front there are tables on the footpath and on the inner outside there are bar stools to sit and drink while watching the world go by. Inside, the restaurant has a clean, industrial feel to it. It was busy, but not overly loud. We were seated right away and your placemat is the menu, so you dive right into looking for things that grab your taste buds. Many - if not all - dishes are great for sharing, so we started out with Chipas (mini cheese rolls, mandioca flour, cheddar and parmesan) and the Croquetas of the day, which were chicken and corn. Before those came, we were served up a mini bread roll each with an olive and ricotta dip. Very delicious. The entrees came out and they were heavenly. The Chipas were amazing and I could have just had several serves of those as my meal. The were like mini warm cheese scones. The croquetas were good; had a beautiful crumbing on the outside, but the inside was nice, though nothing to rave about. For the main, I ordered my own Caviche de Salmon. It came with mango, cherry tomatoes, onion and plantain crisps. I didn't much care for the plantain crisps, and I hated the fact that there was coriander in the dish without it being listed on the menu. I would have asked for it without it, as I can't stand coriander. Yuck. Of course, there was something that really stood out to me on the dessert menu, so I had to order it. It was a chocolate fondant, with banana and caramel ice cream. That sounded incredibly appealing and tasted really, really good. My only minor complaint about it, was that it was truly ICE cream. That almost ruined it, but the flavours were everything. There was just a few things I didn't like about True South. One was the tables felt sticky. Two was that you could smell cigarette smoke from outside, even though it's illegal to smoke right outside an eatery. And three, because of the open shutters, it allowed for flies to fly in. Small things I guess in relation to how good the food and service was. Yes, the mains came out slowly, but they were really busy and food was continually leaving the kitchen. Would I go back again?? YES, YES, YES. I really enjoyed the meal and it was something different to usual here in Melbourne. How authentic it is, I don't know. But if you want a great spot with good atmosphere, great food and reasonably priced meals, then this is the place for you. It's worth the drive.
