A kingdom where meat is the monarch, Charcoal Grill On The Hill is a Melbourne Institution, and the…read morebest venue in the city for steak. Be warned, it isn't for the light hearted: cases of meat will catch your gaze as you enter, and make sure you order your steak rare or medium-rare (you may get some strange looks otherwise). Melbournians and visitors travel miles to sample some of the quality steak that Charcoal Grill On The Hill delivers. Call ahead and book a table to be sure that you'll get a seat. While the entrees and desserts are worthwhile, they pale into insignificance when compared to the main event: the steak. My advice would be to get a simply get a premium cut; the sizes vary from the modest (300g) to the enormous (900g). Add a bowl of coleslaw for the sweet flavour, and a serve of fries (because you need chips with steak after all) are the perfect accompaniments. Charcoal Grill On The Hill also boasts an impressive wine menu. The staff are extremely helpful when it comes to choosing the perfect bottle of red to go with your steak.

If you love steak - and I mean LOVE steak - this is one of two places in Melbourne that I (so far) insist you MUST go to. It's not cheap, but if it takes you a little while to save up to go here, you still won't regret it. This is an up market but minimalist restaurant. There is not fluff and decoration, it is all about the steak. The menu is short, and covers the essentials. When you order your steak (I had the scotch fillet) don't be afraid to order at least one degree rarer than you usually get (e.g. rare if you normally get medium-rare). When you're eating meat of this quality, all you'll notice is the flavour and the melt-in-your-mouth magic of perfectly cooked steak. While the steaks are served on a plain white plate, there is a minimalist salad and some fries brought out to the table to share. No, there isn't a large variety of sides available, however if that's what you are after there are plenty of other places you can go to, particularly the abundance of creative modern Australian restaurants. Grill on the Hill is for when you want to focus all your attention on steak. That slightly charred, flavourful outside and the meltingly tender, juicy meat on the inside. The restaurant itself is quite intimate with a simple white and (reddish) color scheme, it's quite small. Recommend for groups of 2 to 4 people. The wine list is also astounding, and there are some great cheeses on the dessert menu here too. On both counts be prepared to spend a bit, but the staff are incredibly helpful and happy to discuss the (constantly changing) wine and cheese list, and make recommendations if need be. If you are a regular, they will remember you and go out of their way to cater to your preferences.

The first time I ventured in was to indulge in what is likely the happiest of Happy Hours - $2 oysters and $12 glasses of Mumm champagne - that is ACTUAL champagne, people. I refer to this kind of treat as Choysters and I guarantee you, you'll feel like a French royal by the time you finish that second glass. My next trip was for dinner. I was so excited to try their famous Steak Frites - Grilled Hopkins River Porterhouse, with salad and BOTTOMLESS FRIES. Can you feel my excitement as you read?! The steak was cooked to absolute perfection and the salad gave much needed greenery to the dish. This is such a fun destination if you've had a GREAT day at work and want to celebrate or are celebrating an anniversary of birthday but don't want anything too over the top.

Entrecôte is what I imagine heaven is like. It's fun, decadent, doesn't take itself too seriously, and has enough options to keep each day a little different, but not so many that you need to waste precious time making decisions. This isn't complex food, it's not food that requires discussions on how it was made or where the ingredients are from. Nope, it's delicious classic food that lets you get on with what's most important - enjoying the company of your friends. You'll eat and drink way more than you intended, but by golly will you have a fun night.

The service needs a little improvement. I was barely acknowledged as I entered the restaurant before I was directed to go upstairs in an empty floor with about 10-15 tables. We were then assigned to the last table by the wall furthest away as if we were penalized. Remember those days where you had to stand on a corner facing the wall as a kid for timeout! That's what I felt like. The entire place was EMPTY!Service was slow and none of the servers looked like they enjoyed their work. In fact, the server took our order AFTER taking the orders from other customers who came in after us. The steak was tender and was nicely grilled but quality of the steaks was middle of the road. Just tasted like your average steak at an average restaurant at an average price -- nothing spectacular. And by the way, the salad tasted average too.

No imagination or presentation with this plate. Just a plate of breaded calamari that arrived less than 5 minutes after I ordered it. I then ordered the Ribeye. It was chewy and had a lot of gristle in it. Half of the pieces I ate I was gnawing through gristle, just not a good piece of meat for 75 AUD. Was not worth the cost at all.

It's a 4.5. This steakhouse is tucked away in a lane off Little Collins St. I know this area well…read morebut had no idea this place was here. It's a pleasantly laid out bistro that I found warm and very easy on the eye. Things feel relaxed here, at least on a Monday visit. I was warmly and politely greeted at front of house. My desire just for a Greek salad with some grilled chicken was easily negotiated. The salad was lovely. The chicken was tender and very nicely marinated. It was beautifully grilled and had a deep lasting flavour. The salad too was nicely composed and had a lovely flavour as well. Add extra points too for a couple of heirloom tomatoes which we all know are pricey. There was no skimping on the olive oil, olives or feta either and the Spanish onion was used judiciously and didn't overpower the dish. I enjoyed the dish very much and it delivered more than I was expecting. I love it when a simple dish is so well prepared and as enjoyable as this one was. The kitchen should take a bow. Hats off to my server too who was efficient but unhurried and very accommodating. I had no desire for a steak here this time. I expect that'll change in future when I make a return visit.

What was most impressive was the entrees and sides to choose from - we went with the garlic butter prawns, delicious and fragrant; fried onion rings with side of aioli, crunchy and fun; mushroom aranchini balls, chewy and flavourful; and side of hot chips which were pretty standard. Complimentary bread is also served. There is a chart in the menu to help select the right cut of beef for you. This was useful and the mid-range organic selection of scotch fillet I chose was a very large serve. In fact, I only got through half of it and shared the rest. It was flavourful and rich with the garlic butter topping, although I noticed that the longer the meat sat, it became more chewy. I would have preferred the texture to remain tender. You get a choice of hot chips, creamy mashed potatoes or salad with your meal. Most fine dining establishments would make you pay extra so that was a nice perk. Prices overall are not cheap but this is a good place to enjoy a steak in a less formal atmosphere. There were colourful paintings and natural lighting that enhanced the meal. Lastly, staff were attentive, ensuring we had drinks at all times. I don't think we ever had to call anyone over, so it was a good experience overall.

Unfortunately led astray by Google and TripAdvisor reviews where this place is with a much higher…read morereview than Yelp. Great ambiance and popping spot on a Friday night for dinner, but sadly disappointing food and drink. Service and staff were only saving grace. Corn, onion, and Mozzarella empanadas tasty to start, but then fried broccoli was too heavily battered and lacking much character. Was hoping for maybe tempura or pan fried vegetables that would be more fresh, but alas it was far too heavy. $130 AUD on the Ojo de Bife Ribeye was sadly a lost bet as it was certainly not worth the cost. Cooked pretty well with good external char flavor but the cut of beef was not nearly tender enough at that price point when cooked to medium. The standard accompanying fresh salsa and chimichurri were also not nearly vibrant enough to save it with both being relatively muted in flavor and freshness. The carrots and potatoes as sides were both excellent. Finally the drinks were just ok as well. The Pisco sour was tasty and made well, the Jardin Botanico was the best of the lot with interesting flavors and refreshing, but then the El Brasero was a disappointing old fashioned. The Brasero was far too sweet (and I like sweeter old fashioneds typically), and without enough agave and smoky flavor coming through. All in all if a friend booked this spot I wouldn't make a fuss, but I would not seek it out or recommend it at the cost. Perhaps the even higher priced Wagyu and finer cuts might be different, but I can't say I'd take that chance for the cost. Fun evening spot for drinks and company, with excellent waitstaff and friendly atmosphere where food unfortunately missed the mark.
