We have been waiting for this location to open for well over a year, and we are so excited to finally have a San Martin Bakery in Plano! Since today was their grand opening, I didn't have extremely high expectations, but knowing they have two other successful locations in Dallas, I expected it to be very good. And it was! It opened at 7:00 AM, and I arrived a little after 9:00 AM. They had quite a few employees walking around, though it didn't quite appear that they knew what they should be doing just yet.
I asked an employee standing in front of the cheese bread shelf, "What exactly is this?" As a baker myself, I was intrigued...it looked a lot like cornbread, but thinner, and felt soft and spongy. She simply said, "Quesadilla." I replied, "It tastes like a quesadilla? Is it a tortilla-type of bread?" She just smiled slightly and repeated, "Quesadilla," without really engaging. Persistently, I asked, "What do you normally eat with this? Is it like a cornbread that you have with soup?" She just said, "Yesss, quesadilla," and walked away. Alrighty then! Clearly, there was a language barrier. I asked another employee filling the bins about a few other items, but she just smiled and said nothing. They are brand new, so I am absolutely giving them grace. However, it would be incredibly helpful if they had a few staff members available who speak English well enough to explain their delicious-looking options. Quite a few items in the self-serve cases didn't have signs to identify them, so I ended up skipping a few interesting things because I wanted to know what they were before buying.
I got home and cut into the two croissant pastries I bought, and they were fresh and flaky. The almond croissant could have used a little more filling in my opinion, but it was still delicious. They also have a large dining area. While I didn't get a look at the full menu, the restaurant side was already pretty full of customers. I truly wish this place excellent success, and I look forward to coming back for lunch! read more
