It is a rare occasion that I get Mr. Snarky's company on a Sunday evening, so understandably I forgot to plan something for Sunday evening dinner. After he takes off for the south, I usually just have some leftovers (if there are any) or toast and tea... I know. At least it isn't pot noodles. Anyway, Mr. Snarky asked what was for dinner and I looked at him quizzically. I thought we would end up walking down the road to one of the restaurants nearby, but instead he started looking up restaurants a bit further afar.
One of the restaurants he chose was going to be about 30 minutes away, but then I remembered we have passed a number of restaurants on our adventures around Bolton, and the only name I could remember was San Marino. He looked it up and it was only 15 minutes away and offered a nice Mediterranean menu... emphasis on Italian. So off we went.
The sun was starting to set so the drive into the hills on the outskirts of Bolton was quite stunning. And San Marino has a beautiful view on a hill... if the temperature is right. Sadly it was a bit chilly outside so we couldn't make use of the outdoor seating, but I have a feeling at the peak of summer it would be lovely! There were a lot of cars in the parking lot and I hadn't really expected it to be so busy! As we walked in, we could see a man playing a keyboard in the entry way. Definitely wasn't expecting that!
We were warmly greeted and even though they were fairly busy and we hadn't booked, we were seated immediately. I really like the decor... rustic wood tables, stone floors, twinkle lights to set the mood... really intimate and romantic! Seriously guys, a great place to take your date... even Mr. Snarky said that. However, they are family friendly as there were a number of children about. The staff are quite keen as we were asked about three times after sitting, by three different staff for our drinks order.
The menu does actually offer a number of Mediterranean options... from a couple of Greek dishes to Paella, but with a focus on Italian food. I think there is a nice variety, but not overwhelming. We ordered some Foccacia to start with and I went with the Risotto Tartufo, while Mr. Snarky went with the Paella Espana. Our Foccacia came out quite quickly, but it was a bit confusing because it looked more like the flatbreads that were listed underneath it. I guess I had been thinking we would get Foccacia bread rather than the thin Foccacia you might get in Liguria. Regardless, it was nice to munch on before dinner.
A couple of pizzas went by and they looked quite nice... and quite large! I also saw an ice cream sundae and Sticky Toffee Pudding go by as well... so I may have been thinking about dessert before even starting on dinner. My risotto came out with lots of lovely shaved Pecorino, exactly how I was hoping it would. Mr. Snarky's Paella came in a metal bowl on a wood plank, another bowl to put shells in, an extra spoon, and a wet wipe. And yes, he used all of the extras that came along with his dish :).
My risotto was really lovely, just could have used a pinch of salt. However, it was packed with large bits of chicken and mushrooms. I haven't had a risotto in awhile, so this one really hit the spot. Mr. Snarky's Paella looked a bit more like a Seafood Stew with a bit of rice, hence the spoon, but it was really chocked full of seafood. Mussels and clams still in their shells, two massive prawns (still in the shells, hence the wet wipe), some chicken, and some chorizo. I had a bite and while I'm not usually a fan of Paella, I did quite like this one. We ate every bite... and enjoyed every bite!
Even though we were a bit on the full side, we decided to have a look at the dessert menu and I decided I really wanted to try the Torta della Nonna. Mr. Snarky decided to go with the chocolate brownie. It was a bit of a surprise as I thought he was going to choose the Baked Raspberry Cheesecake. While the piano music was nice, sometimes it did get a bit loud, but if it could be a bit softer, I think it would be perfect! Our desserts looked lovely and mine was warm and perfect with a side of cold ice cream. If you like a custard tart or a custard slice, then you will love the Torta della Nonna. The best way I can describe it is a custard pie. It isn't overly sweet, but it does have a richness about it. Mr. Snarky's Brownie looked nice, but it wasn't anything special, although I think if they had asked him if he wanted it warm or cold and had warmed up the brownie (that would have been Mr. Snarky's choice), I think it would have made it a bit better... a bit more luxurious.
Overall, we really enjoyed it. The food is delicious and really affordable. Sure there are some dishes that are on the expensive side, but many of the pastas and pizzas are under £10 which make it quite nice for families. The setting is lovely and it isn't very difficult to get to. A great little gem just outside of Bolton. read more
