Over the past 30 years of visiting Pine Mountain, San Marcos is our required must visit -- often multiple times. We have come to love the reliable dining room cheer, the many friendly faces from a staff with decades of service, and a menu to meet every culinary interest. This time I had the shrimp burrito which was served quickly, hot, and with beans and rice. Very tasty. The pre-meal chips and salsa were generous and hit the spot. I have always had good experiences with their margaritas. Back in the day, the jumbo margarita was worth its weight in gold... Eat local. read more

I recently moved to Las Vegas from Pine Mountain and I genuinely have no idea how people have anything bad to say about this place. The service is fast, the servers are nice, the coke is crisp, the chips and salsa are amazing, and me and my husband would always split the #55 with flour tortillas and I think about it every day. We have been staying in a nearby RV park and wanted to try this out. The number of cars in the parking lot gave us high hopes. It's not terrible but not great either. The chips are good, but the salsa is the cheap stuff that might as well just be pureed tomatoes. The fajita veggies were over cooked and had a slimy texture. The waiter brought my wife's and said, 'shrimp fajitas' so she said, 'no, it's supposed to be chicken.' He turned to me and looked me right in the eyes and said, 'she said shrimp.' Then he looked down and saw that it actually was chicken after all. Tried to pass it off as a joke. Then he wouldn't come back until it was time for the check so I could not order another beer and ended up eating with nothing to drink with my food. What a great place to eat. We took a quick getaway with some friends to pine Mountain and found this friendly place. It was wrapped up with a line out the door but only took 15 minutes to get a table so that was outstanding. Now onto what you really care about, the food! Most Mexican joints all taste about the same but this one was heads and shoulders above the rest. So much so we ate there twice. I got the pork carnitas and it was fresh, seasoned to perfection, moist and a lot of it. Friends got the quesadillas, thick and full of tasty chicken and cheese, the chicken and rice dish which was piled high and pretty close to authentic as I've found. Went back the second night and got the same thing it was so good. Y'all don't miss this place if you visit there. read more

You won't find a more down to earth, family feeling than at San Marcos! Been going for many years! I usually ask for a little more seasoning on my scrimp which they're happy to accommodate! We were staying at Callaway Gardens and the food onsite is horrid so we decided on Mexican for a party of 10. There was a 45 minute wait with some other large parties there and it was a Friday night. Once we were seated the servers were fast, efficient and accurate. The guacamole dip looks like the kind that comes from a bag with no chunks of actual homemade looking guacamole but it was still pretty good. They tout it as dip so I knew not to expect table side guac. The salsa was good as well. Everyone got something different and no complaints on the food. Reasonable pricing too. Our family comes to Callaway Gardens for a week every summer and we've been coming to San Marcos for about eight years now. We eat here a minimum of four times during the week. Let that tell you how good it is. Every aspect of this restaurant gets full marks: food flavor, quantity, drinks, service, price, atmosphere and authenticity. I've tried at least a dozen items on the menu and everything is delicious. Best dishes to order: any type of quesadilla (especially shrimp, grilled chicken or carnitas), grilled chicken burrito with enchilada sauce, chicken or shrimp con queso. If you enjoy spicy food be sure to ask for their hot salsa...mix with white queso for a great dip. The portions are generous and your chip basket will never be empty. Beer is served the right way with lime in chilled mug. Margaritas are another great option. The service is top notch...quick, attentive and with flare. Ask for Pedro. It is a family owned and operated restaurant so the staff go to great lengths to make sure you are taken care of. You can't beat the prices with a piñata. Our average party is about 12 people and the bill is around $60. You read that right. Everyone leaves full. The atmosphere is cheery with Mexican art, mariachi music playing, and trophies lining the wall...a true testament to greatness. Lastly, the authenticity of the place is uncanny. You won't find a more Mexican meal on the very streets of Guadalajara. Whether you're in Pine Mountain, Columbus, or Atlanta, San Marcos is worth the drive. P.S. Excellent Mexican food! We lived in TX for 12 years, and this stacks right up there. If you are looking for fancy, chain style Mexican food, this won't be your jam. Portions are large and food is very good. I had the "E". The Chile relleno had a little kick and was smothered in white queso. The Spanish rice was delicious! Enchilada was solid as well, and the crunchy taco was fresh and overflowing. Kids had quesadillas and tacos, and the gobbled them up. Ahhh we have missed solid, no frills Mexican food. The place looks fine. It is very busy. The dining room has shiny vinyl chairs and booths and formica tables. Service is instant. The margaritas come in 3 sizes, all ample. The bottled beer comes with nicely chilled mugs which are actually big enough to hold an entire bottle of beer, unusual. The regular salsa is very mild, but if you ask, they will bring you a hot salsa, which is bright orange and VERY hot. We had the chili rellenos, tacos, and enchiladas, all filled with ground beef. It is unusual to find chili rellenos filled with meat. Each plate comes with a good-sized helping of guacamole, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. The rice is fine but the beans were not so good. They were pureed, and an odd, pale color. Overall, we loved it. We plan to go back before we leave the area. read more

First, the obvious -- this place looks like a dump inside and out. It is run down with crappy furnishings and threadbare carpet. Once you get past that though -- its really quite good. Our server was fantastic and was a great part of the meal. The food was very good, and reasonably priced. I would imagine this is the only Mexican place for miles, and it is well worth your time and money. I should say the salsa wasn't very good, IMHO -- but everything else was quite tasty. I will definitely return the next time I am in the area. read more

Muy Delicioso!!! Warm chips and tasty salsa was automatically brought to the table. I got the Chicken Chimichanga dinner with grilled chicken and a Patron Margarita on the rocks. OMG! Both were wonderful! My friends got a chicken chimichanga (shredded chicken) and beef chimichanga (steak meat) and my husband got steak fajitas. Each person said their meal was "yummy" and they would get them again! If we are in the area again, we will definitely be back! read more

Was visiting and staying at Callaway Gardens. We were looking for a place to eat offsite. Read the reviews on the Mexican Restaurant and figured we'd give it a shot. The restaurant was crowded by the time we got there on a Friday night around 7 pm. While we waited, we talked with some of the locals. They expressed how great the food was. So we waited the hour for the table. No bar but if you tell the hostess you want a drink, they give you whatever you want and add it to your tab when you check out. We finally got a seat over an hour later. We were given chips and salsa right away. It took about another 15 min before someone came and took our drink order. Waiter wasn't very nice to us. It seemed like he was nicer to the locals at the other tables. When our good finally came, there was so much garlic on it, I couldn't even eat 3 bites. I had taco, enchilada and tamale. My husband had chiles rellenos. His plate had some garlic as well but not nearly as much. When the waiter saw I didn't really eat it, he didn't inquire why. Just handed us the check. Would NEVER go back to this place if I was on the area. Find someplace else to go!! read more

I was at Callaway Gardens for a work event and found this place online. The area immediately surrounding the gardens didn't have a huge selection, so I was pleased to find this gem. I never thought this remote area of Georgia would have such amazing Mexican! The dishes were fantastic, the staff was friendly, and the service was quick. Get a margarita!
