I had my car towed to their shop to be looked at after it dying on a nearby freeway. My gas gauge read 19 miles left so I didn't think it was a gas issue. They had my car for 2 hours, informed me I was just out of gas, said they put 3 gallons ($25) and it was working fine. I was relieved to hear that and figured it would be maybe $125 -$150 for their services...of putting a few gallons of gas in the tank. I was shocked when the guy told me it would be $542.87!! They knew I had no way of proving as a bmw mechanic, the first thing they probably did, was put gas in the tank based off the notifications on the dash. I recently took my 2014 X1 to the dealer for a recall item. The dealer did an overall inspection and notified me that it was time to replace my front brakes which I was aware of. They quoted a good price for brakes which I confirmed with San Leandro Auto BMW Service so I told the dealer to go ahead and do the brakes. However, the dealer then notified me that the passenger front wheel bolt/ hub threads were damaged (I had recently purchased new tires and was told that when installed the bolt was put on too tight and was stripped). The quote seemed really high so I called San Leandro Auto BMW Service and emailed them the quote from the dealer. I was told that if the work that the dealer was in fact needed their cost would be less than 1/2 of what the dealer quoted. So, I took my car to San Leandro, they did not have to replace the hub, I had a spare bolt and the repair that the dealer wanted to charge $2k for cost me less than $200. I initially found San Leandro Auto BMW Service a few years ago when the dealer said I needed repairs that were going to cost around $7k. San Leandro Auto BMW looked over the items the dealer listed, told me none of the items were needed immediately and provided a quote for the items that was less than 1/2 of what the dealer quoted. I highly recommend this shop. They are honest, provide great service with reasonable prices. read more

I took my car in because my X3 had a starter issue. I chose this place because of the reviews but I should have been more cautious. As a woman, you never know if you are being scammed and I feel like that was my experience. I was told by Dave that I needed to replace the module due to a sensor issue. They went ahead and replaced the part and days later, told me the car was ready. They never gave me a price until the work was done and they said, I will need to do another $1500 repair but, in the meantime, my car should have no issue starting, it will only shake in the morning for 10-15 seconds but will still come on. Unfortunately, the car will no longer cut on, I am not even sure the module was replaced by Jerome (the tech). I feel completely scammed. I would not recommend taking your car here. read more

Have been a customer since 2022 for 2 BMWs...an X1 and an E46 M3. The Daves and Jerome do a great job of keeping our cars going. From easy maintenance (oil changes, rear diff fluid) to more complicated issues (coolant leaks, faulty O2 sensors, short circuits), I find these guys to be great problem solvers that are fair, honest, and affordable. My first encounter with SL Auto was a while back when my e28 was due for a valve adjustment. I took it in and they had it done in a matter of hours. No more tick from the motor and the car's been running great ever since! Flash forward a couple months... I'm working to revamp my suspension and, while disassembling the front, I was unable to remove the shock tubes from the strut housing (the collar was seized tight after 30+ years without replacement). I called up Dave and he said to come by so he could take a look at it. It took him and Jerome about 10 minutes to break it loose. He then sent me on my way without charging for his time. I took my car to the dealer in Jan 2023 for an oil change. I was told that I needed to have 3 things done and the total was over $7k. I had been going to the dealer as everything up to that point had been under warranty. The independent place that I had taken my old BMW to had changed ownership and another one had closed so I decided to give San Leandro Auto BMW Service a try. I took my car in to have them provide a quote on the 3 items that the deal said I needed to have done. 1st off after doing an inspection they told me that I did not need to have any of the items done immediately and the quote they provided me was less than 1/2 of what the dealer quoted me. One thing they did that ticked me off was that they put license plate frames (advertising their business) on my car WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. I took them off. I didn't know that a repair shop that renders BMW oriented services is so close to my house in San Leandro. I had to seek service outside of my regular mechanic for a BMW specific problem. I found this place due to its Yelp score. I spoke to Dave (owner) over the phone and he quoted me for the parts, without mentioning what the labor costs would be. This is the first time I've ever dealt with a mechanic to fail to quote the labor costs up front. Sure enough, it was a red flag that proved to be quite an issue as upon my arrival to pick up the car, the labor amounted to nearly $500 for repairs that were extraordinarily simple. The labor was almost 75% more than the cost of the parts alone. It is also worth noting that the car was completed a day late (without me being updated) than I was told and there was still broken glass that was not vacuumed inside the car. I asked to discuss the bill and he couldn't even find the notes from our original call. When I explained my shock at the non-existent communication regarding the labor costs, he stubbornly claimed he DID tell me the costs, and immediately became defensive, losing all sense of customer service. He then yelled at me saying he "doesn't have time for customers like me" and to "get the f*** out of his shop". He treated me like I was mentally incompetent and like I was expecting to only pay for the parts. No, sir, I expect you to provide me with the labor cost before making the repairs so I can make an informed decision on whether to proceed or not. He then later admitted that he might have only told me the estimated time it would take to make the repair. Giving me a time estimate is not a cost estimate. He refused to understand or find common ground, and continued to become more and more irate with me while claiming that I was trying to cheat him. Still cursing at me, he felt the need to remind me that he has been in the business 40+ years. He might need reminding that there are plenty of people in business for a long time that survive just fine despite poor business practices or customer service. The past reviews don't seem to reflect this, so perhaps I was unlucky, or perhaps Dave refuses to admit what did and didn't happen. At the end of this, Dave waived his labor costs before telling me yet another time to "get the f*** out of his store", even though I actually offered to pay for them out of principle. Maybe it was just a bad week, but I will never return here and I will specifically recommend all friends and contacts of mine with BMWs go elsewhere. read more

These men are as ethical and honest as it gets. The very first time I went in they advised me that a very expensive repair was covered under the 100,000 mile warranty of the BMW emissions control system. Everybody else I had been to, including Fremont BMW who brought this to my attention(!), wanted from $1,700 to $3,150 to do the repair. But the Alexander's insisted that the repair was definitely covered under that warranty. ...finally East Bay BMW did the warranty work free of charge (and I got no argument from them that the repair was completely covered..) So if your BMW is out of warranty, use these guys! There are three other neighbors of mine who use them and they are equally as pleased. read more

My son and I had just picked up a 1986 BMW 325es from southern California. We had it a week when the car overheated and had to be towed to a garage. The tow truck driver suggested San Leandro Auto (I lived in Hayward at the time). The problem was a top radiator hose that had ruptured. When I picked up the car, I couldn't believe how nice the shop looked and how very nice the two Daves were. That was 11 years ago and 90K miles later.
