A group of 8 ladies/friends did a hut to hut trip from 9/ - 9/29/25. We booked a year in advance as the hut system is very popular and you might not get the dates you want if you have a large group and want specific dates. We had an easy time booking. Everyone must sign the liability waiver prior to the trip. They are very clear in communication throughout. Once you are booked they send all the information including "hikers bible" out to you, maps and other information. They do not stock the hiker huts. They are clean. They have pots/pans/dishes etc. All of that is explained on the website and in the information that they send you. You are expected to bring your own food. They also supply a sleeping bag for you during specific months. Of course you could choose to bring your own as well. There are wood stoves in all of the huts. during summer/fall months you are supposed to go look for dry twigs, sticks and wood out on the property. There are springs or water sources near every hut. There are compostable toilets near each hut as well. Huts are about 4 to 9 miles apart. The only real complain we had about the huts were that the doors squeak and the screen doors slam. If you are in a group of 8 in the hut and you have folks waking up to go the bathroom in teh middle of the night it can get a little loud. They are VERY clear that you will meet their driver for the shuttle at a certain location in ouray at a specific time on the first day of your trip. There is not an extra charge for this. They drive you about 50 minutes to the start of the trip. The driver will answer any of your questions you have as well while you are on your drive. However, any questions that were asked by our group over the year we had before our trip were answered in a timely manner. They provided maps and gpx maps that you could download into your phone and also a detailed description of the route in the hikers bible as well. We had no difficulty with route finding. There is not really a lot of other hiking to do once you get to your hut for the day so just slow down and take it all in. The fall colors were stunning. Booked the hut to hut hiking trip on 6/21/18. I was supposed to start the trip on 9/12/18. I have all my own hiking gear, i had already bought my food for the trip and told people where i was going. Life happened and I was unable to start the trip on 9/12. I called on 9/13 in the morning to let them know i did not make the trip and I wanted to rebook. I was talking to Kristen and she said I cant rebook because I was supposed to start the trip yesterday. That did not make any sense to me, the only reason they knew I did not start the trip was because I called and told them. They mail you a key to the huts and you handle your own transportation. I could tell right away that Kristen was not enabled to solve my problem so I asked to speak to her manager. Kelly wasnt there but called me back. I explained i was unable to start my trip on the 12th but wanted to rebook. She said I could not because I did not tell them before my trip started. I told her in the airlines, i.e., rebooking is a normal thing if you do not make your flight. She said she's 'pretty sure you cant book a flight thats already left.' I said you can book the same flight the next day. Kelly said they book the cleaners a week in advance, so thats why they need to know when someone starts the trip. I said that there were others starting the hike that day too so they would have to clean anyways. She said to read the terms and conditions on their website and you can only rebook 30 days prior. I said life does not happen 30 days prior, it happens the day you're leaving town. Also, I said im sure she would want some consideration if she were in my situation. Im very polite and a nice person, I did not take any tone with her. She said the words 'terms and conditions' again. I was feeling like she was also not enabled to rebook me, like at a store when the supervisor with a key has to come help. I said Joe is the owner right? She said yes thats her dad. I asked to speak to him. She said he's not working today but i could re-read the terms and conditions, then send an email to Kelly Ryan info@sanjuanhuts.com basically begging to rebook and she would pass it on. A phone call is 10 times faster than email, I asked if he could call me instead? Kelly said thats 'probably not going to happen.' Then she said something about terms and conditions for the 5th or 6th time. Asked me when I wanted to rebook, I said 9/23. She said it was her day off too and she was pouring cement when i called, that she would call back in an hour. I believed her, said yes and hung up. 5 seconds later i receive a text from Kelly " Hi Becky, I am going to have Kristen refund your trip. It does not seem like we will be a good match for you.' I replied that I wanted to rebook. No response. Good thing she works for Dad, in the real world people get fired for lying. I will try and post a pic of the text message. read more

I read about this biking hut to hut system a few years ago I decided to buy a mountain bike last year. This is definitely an adventure without the weight. We started with 5 Telluride to Moab on 8/1/2018. Two dropped out because they didn't train and the altitude, heat and hills made them miserable. Myself and my 2 male friends, loved the challenge. This is not easy riding. Elevation gains and losses are what we crave and we got them! Taking alternate trails requires skill, Gaia waypoints worked great and we trusted every turn without disappointment or confusion. I would say this system is part cross country and part true mountain biking. We took many of the alternate trails that were available to us on the designated days and although some were more difficult such as day 5, Ute Creek, for my level, my friends were elated. There is definitely some gravel grinding, Cows, elk, wild turkey, blackbear, and cougar paws on the path. All of which add to the adventure! This is cowboy country, you're surrounded by BLM land where free range cows are in abundance. We opted to carry our water rather than filter for that reason. We had fun dodging cattle at times. This is there home, we are visitors, was our opinion. If you don't like variety, extreme gains and losses as a challenge, remoteness, well-stocked and clean huts with a special fresh fruit treat upon arrival, or animals in the wild, then perhaps pick another adventure. We 3 finished in Moab in 106F via the Porcupine Rim Trail and cant stop talking about the adventure and variety. Another highlight is stopping to talk with ranchers some of whom have been in this incredibly remote area for 5 generations! Day 7, dinosaur tracks!!!! We did the Durango to Moab route, starting on August 11. It was a very unique and memorable experience. The range of conditions (weather, geology, views, trails, etc.) is extremely wide and absolutely awesome over the course of 7 days.   We used AllTrails for directions to a large extent and Garmin Earthmate a little bit with the gpx file that we received from SJ Huts. The itinerary was easy to follow and we did not need to use the paper maps and directions that were sent. It would have been an improvement to have the gpx file split in daily files as the size of one file for the entire itinerary makes it cumbersome to use (the elevation feature in AllTrails was useless for example). We thought that Day 1 (segment 24 of the Colorado trail) was going to be the easiest of the trip. The weather (rain, wind, and plenty of mud) and the high elevation (12,000'+) made it the most difficult. Water availability in general was not an issue, except maybe on Day 5.   The huts were functional, clean, very well equipped and amazingly provisioned with food. They were all in beautiful locations. We had excellent dinners and lunches every day with fruit, vegetables, pasta, rice, etc.  There were two coolers with plenty of ice that held fresh food like eggs, bacon, cheeses etc. There were plenty of electrolytes drinks and energy bars.    The trails and roads did not require a lot of MTB technical skills but you need to be in excellent physical shape to enjoy the trip. The views from the trails change constantly: from high alpine to desert mesa to canyons to red cliffs and arches in Utah. Listen to the advice provided by SJ Hut: shell, rain pants, mud cleaning stuff, bike repair kit, etc. are critical needs. We broke a spoke on the 1st day,  a chain on the last day and had to lubricate many parts on the bikes several times during the trip because of the dust and mud.               In summary, it was one of the best things I have done in my life and I would do it again. read more

We enjoyed spectacular views on the three day Gravel Grinder tour from Grand Junction to Moab. The skies were blue and the leaves were showing their autumnal splendor. We left on a Sunday and the traffic on the first leg of our trip was a bit intimidating. Big pick-up trucks were speeding by and did not always pull over, but it was only an issue on the first day. It may not be a problem during the week. The huts were small for eight people, but luckily we only had four cyclists. The food provided was more than adequate with fresh vegis, eggs and bacon. The systems were well organized and carefully thought out. I only wish I had trained a bit more before the trip started. read more

I did the Telluride to Gateway hut-to-hut mt biking trip July 28-August 1. SJHS management brushed off my suggestion that they consider exterminating the mice infestations with "we can't control mother nature" and "that's why we have people sign liability waivers". Before signing up for a trip like this, I recommend asking what rodent mediation they've done. Great views, lots of gravel road riding with 10-15% single track, beautiful countryside, impressive there was bacon and eggs for breakfast. However, I wouldn't do it again without a guarantee that mice were exterminated. read more

I just finished the Telluride to Moab trip last week and had a blast. It just might be the most fun trip I have ever done. The riding was varied (technical single track to well-packed dirt roads) and there were great options for every level of experience and fitness in our group. The huts were comfy, stocked with great food, and clean. The day-by-day maps, directions, GPS waypoints and additional single-track maps were really above and beyond my expectations. I did the seven day Telluride to Moab mountain bike trip. They have a decent system, but it seems like because they are so popular, they don't put as much energy into the small items. As a former river outfitter, I know that focusing on the small items can make a big difference. Be sure to read all the reviews on San Juan Huts, especially those on TripAdvisor. I read several and noted the tone of the replies submitted by San Juan Huts. A touch defensive to say the least. read more

This trip has been on my bucket list for years. I was so excited to go with a great group of best friends and a few new friends. The first day we thought we would take the single track options, followed the maps and directions yet found one of the trails closed and this detail had not been updated on the SJHH directions. No biggie. Hut #1 was well stocked and in a gorgeous spot. Thankful I had the tracks on my GPS device for the remainder of the adventure. Our group had noticed that the fresh food from hut to hut was getting slimmer and slimmer as the groups in front of us must have been thinking that the huts would be restocked after them which didn't happen. By the time we got to the Gateway hut there were no frozen ice blocks in the coolers as they had all defrosted. Thank goodness we stopped at the post office as the post mistress Kristin was amazing. She got us in touch with someone who brought fresh ice blocks for the coolers and he gave us a ride to the gateway resort where we ate and drank until dark. The last hut, LaSal Mtns, also no frozen or even cool ice blocks in the cooler and the food was already starting to smell bad. I had cell service so I called SJHH folks and was told "sorry. We will stock the hut tomorrow". So disappointed. Headed to Moab last day part of the route was detoured as the mountain bypass was getting a facelift. At the end of the detour there was a mostly hike a bike thru the forest. We had to follow the survey tap tied to branches and had to climb over two sections of barbed wire fencing. Thank goodness the guys waited for my girlfriend and me at these points to help hoist bikes and bags. It would have been great if the hut peeps would have asked the land owners if they could put a gate in at each of these spots. I felt like for the money this was not worth it as most of the riding was on fire roads, the "don't miss" single track was not that great. Head to MBO in Oakridge, OR if u want a super fun 3 days of amazing single track. U don't even have to bring a bike (but should) as almost every bike manufacturer is there with demos. You must be use to the altitude. This is not for beginners. If you drop out, you lose all your money. It's riding on gravel roads, or paved roads with jeeps, cars, etc. at times. Not for the faint of heart. I would not recommend this. Their policies and customer service are antiquated to say the least. Forget the NYTimes article. Save your money and try another bike adventure. Way overblown and over rated. read more

Not a mountain biking trip The huts are well stocked and the views are nice from some of the huts, but don't let them convince you this is a mountain biking trip. Its 30-40 miles per day on a gravel road. We took all of the recommended "single track" options plus a few others, and only were on "single track" for 28 of the 180 or so miles from telluride to gateway (which was supposto be the one with the most singletrack). Also san juan huts considers anything that is not a gravel road to be single track, so many of those 28 miles are on ATV double tracks or just un-maintained jeep roads. We were very specific in asking about good single track mountain bike riding and I feel like we were lied to (everyone on the trip felt the same). So it would be a cool trip if we took one of those party bike bars where everyone sits at a bar and peddles the huge contraption from bar to bar (the roads are all smooth gravel so that would be the perfect bike to have), a full suspension mountain bike is the last thing you need on this trip. Day 1 we road some amazing single track at the resort (using the free gondola), which was not on their recommended routes, and was the best mountain biking of the whole trip (way better than the 2 single track add ons they suggested, which we've ridden in the past and are mostly uphill - taking the gondola you get more downhill. Then we road the 26 miles of dirt road to the hut - amazing views from the hut, but 26 miles of climbing a dirt road sucks. Day 2 - we hoped to get that 3k of vert back on single track, but the single track only lasted 300 ft (and they actually tell you not to walk your bike down that part), then you ride down the rest on a gravel road, and peddle another 20 or so miles on a gravel road to get to the hut. After lunch we took 1.5 of the 2 "single track" options around that hut. the first one was entirely on an unmainted jeep road (they called it an atv track, but you easily could have driven a car on it), the second one was half on a road, with a few miles of single track, but since we were already at mile 38 for the day, a few miles of single track was not making anyone happy. Day 3 was 40 miles of road with a few "single track" options that again were mostly ATV track and jeep roads. The one single track part of it was great, but really burly (steep steep climbs and rough descents), it was awesome but rough on a 40 mile day. Day 4 was again 40 miles of road. We took the recommended single track option, which was indeed single track but really was a cow path. We continuously had to scare cows off the trail and were completely covered in cow poop afterwards (many many crossings of cow poop and mud pits and apparently when you yell at cows to move off the trail they run down the trail scared and dihiaria all over the place) - we literally moved over 100 cows off the "single track" and passed over 300. The last single track option was awesome, but only a few miles long. Day 5 started again with a good 7-8 mile gravel road climb, but then you got about a 2k single track descent, which was sweet. Sadly after that we were back to riding the last 2.5k of descent on a dirt road. I'd give 5 stars to the beer selection at each hut, but I'm told they subcontract that out to a liquour store in montrose, so really that 5 stars goes to The Liquor Store in Montrose. read more

Great hike and huts but if you want to communicate with the people in the office while booking your trip, do not expect getting any useful info from Kristin (I believe that's her name) who answers the phone and more importantly, don't expect a reply from Kelly through email. Their website says that a shuttle is included in the package. It is not explained as it should on the website. A shuttle is absolutely necessary for this hike, unless you have two cars in the area. It wasn't until 5 days before our trip were any of the costs explained. We booked this trip about 6 months in advance. After asking questions about the shuttle, the reply was 'I don't know,' 'our website must be wrong' and 'sorry that this wasn't explained earlier.' After asking follow up questions, looking to pay the extra $150 to book the shuttle, my email was ignored. Frustrated with the lack of communication, I found an outside shuttle service. While expressing our troubles with other hikers on our hike, the other party had the same issues. We even ran into an ex-employee in the area who admitted that the lack of organization is the reason they could no longer work with the company. The hiking/trail directions they give you were often too complicated and would get you lost if you followed them. The same thoughts were shared with other hikers' journal entries in each hut. The things that the company has nothing to do with (hike, views, laughter and good times along the way) were amazing. Kudos to the San Juan mountains! The things that the company had a direct effect with (booking, information, basic office work, communicating with their customers, shuttle service) were horrible. They basically chose to ignore their job. Good thing the mountain range is so beautiful because, once on the trail, it kind of made me forget how troubling the booking process was. read more

I recently finished the Sneffels Traverse hike from Last Dollar in Telluride to Ouray. It was incredible. I'm 32, in pretty good shape, and this hike kicked my butt. I've been hiking for most of my adult life (often in the San Juans), but I gained new respect for Mother Nature here. Any day hike you've ever done that's marked "strenuous" on the trail map has got nothing on this hike, especially the first 8 miles. I normally hike at about 3 miles an hour and this had me at 1 mph in a lot of places. Don't go in thinking this is some kind of guided or organized hike - it's not. It's 32 miles of virtually unused trails over rugged San Juan terrain. The other parties we left with all got lost, sometimes for a couple of hours (but they did figure it out eventually.) There isn't anyone out there to save you or point you in the right direction. The huts are fine, basic but have everything you need. Only one had a mouse problem - they will run across you when you sleep. But every tough moment was worth the feeling of accomplishment in finishing it. I absolutely loved doing this. Definitely not for beginners, and if you aren't from altitude, take some time to acclimate first. There are some incredible views, but most of it is hiking in deep forest. Take a really good map, rain gear, water shoes, and trekking poles - you'll be glad you did. It's an incredible journey, folks. read more

First timer to SJHuts, and certainly not the last time!!...Me and my roadie peeps tried the brand new "Tour of the Canyons" ride, which was offered in May, and it was truly Epic! The huts were stocked beyond our wildest dreams (better food than my own pantry!), and every step of the process, from the booking to the communication to the actual roll-out, was flawless. Kristin and John were friendly and patient and provided us with invaluable information and guidance. We were lucky enough to meet the "Father of SJH's" and his wife, during our adventure, making the event even more Epic! The route was unbelievably gorgeous and the roads had light traffic. They suggest gravel grinder bikes for this ride, which is wonderful advice, and one we did not heed, as we opted to use our road bikes with beefier tires, but to avoid a lot of flats (on day 3 specifically), GG's would be the way to go! I hope they keep this tour on the option block cuz it's truly one-of-a-kind!! Thank you, San Juan Huts, for offering such an exhilarating way to explore our state (and beyond)!
