I'm not a huge fan of popping / cracking, etc and Dr. Lay does NOT take a "quick fix" approach. He thinks about how he can help you heal long-term and operates accordingly. I highly recommend San Jacinto Chiropractic for anything PT / Chiro related. Dr. Lay answers the phone himself and can schedule you promptly. They have massage therapists (Krupali is amazing!) which are included as part of their regimen. I worked with them over the course of two months and was able to restore my shoulder and felt better after every single appointment. This is the experience of a fellow "Yelper", that has not worked with Dr. Lay, yet has been very impressed for what he has done for a friend of mine! For as long as I can remember, a female friend of mine has been suffering from chronic pain throughout her entire body. With a general uncomfortably and distrust related to medical professionals in the chiropractic field it was godsend that she was even able to find a that both did great work and that she could trust. Sadly that relationship came to pass due to her being transferred from her residence in Denver to that of Austin for work. Worried and recently suffering from another accident that further disabled her body, she asked her hometown Chiro for a referral in the Austin area and it is for that reason that she began to work with Dr. Lay. Fast forwarding to roughly 8 weeks from her first appointment, I can happily say that she is feeling 100% better and can not stop talking about how much she loves this guy! She is constantly telling me how the massages that she receives (at every appointment!) make the adjustments well received by her body and that the entire staff takes the time to listen to her specific needs. When asked about where the office is located and how flexible the team is with appointments, she has little to say other than "its in the heart of downtown" and they can "almost always accommodate my hectic and demanding schedule". At the end of the day I am fortunate to say that I do not need a Chiro, but I know that there are countless others out there that do. If in fact you do live and Austin and could use a tune up, this seems like the only logical place to go! read more

Located downtown in the Jimmy Johns building (Congress and 9th), they are always quick and efficient (I never have to wait, ever), they remember me by name and go above and beyond in service and treatment. I have been going here for 1.59 years, and I love it (obviously, or I would be seeing someone else). Dr. Lay helped me get a much needed surgery by writing a letter to the insurance company. Wouldn't have been possible without him! All the masseuses are great too- Julia, Ginger and Erin. I consider going here physical therapy, but also mental because they let me talk their ears off and they laugh at my jokes. I recommend this office without hesitation. read more

I started going to Dr. Lay's office after a major trauma accident 2 years ago. My post-trauma doctors told me "sorry but your accident was bad, so yep it's gonna hurt." Physical therapy didn't relieve the pain. I had all but given up on functioning normally until a friend suggested I switch from another chiropractor's office (that didn't offer soft tissue therapy OR accept insurance) to San Jacinto Chiropractic. Visiting Dr. Lay's office gave me hope that I could feel normal again. One of his massage therapists has a trauma story similar to mine, and continues to be a friendly mentor. Dr. Lay always had my back (ha! pun intended) when my insurance company told me I was using too many visits. With soft tissue therapy and chiropractic adjustments, and thorough but easy-to-understand explanations, I could not recommend this place highly enough for their competence, friendliness, and good results. This isn't your typical spa massage, so yeah there are times when it's going to hurt. That means it's working. I don't mean to sound over-dramatic, but SJC gave me hope in one of the darkest times in my life. They're effing good at what they do. If you need a chiropractor, go see Dr. Lay! I've been seeing chiropractors for preventative maintenance for 22 years, so I know quite a bit about the industry. I am sad to say that I was not impressed with my visit to San Jacinto Chiropractic. It started off with a poor massage by a sweet college girl who is not even licensed in massage therapy... she told me that she is studying to be an office administrator. So that explains why the massage wasn't very good, and even painful at times. Then, Dr. Lay did a quick adjustment that actually made my lower back feel worse afterwards. I was unable to bend forward after the adjustment, even though I WAS able to do so before I came into the office. I told him that my lower back was now hurting me, and he tried adjusting it again, but it didn't help. Unfortunately, I had to pay to see another chiropractor (at The Joint, which does a fairly decent job) a few days later to put my lower back into place again. On top of that, they charged my health insurance company a whopping $155 for the brief visit, of which I was required to pay $111.29. The invoice said that I was given an exam for $65... I was given no such exam. I was given a brief massage and a brief adjustment. Maybe they're trying to bill for the massage by listing it underneath "exam". In any case, their office originally told me that I would only have to pay a $45 copay for the visit... imagine my shock when I received the rest of the whopping bill in the mail nearly 3 months later. All around, just a poor experience from start-to-finish. Not pleased at all. read more

I'd suffered from debilitating headaches for years before taking a shot in the dark and visiting Dr. Lay. After numerous visits to neurologists, dentists, general care doctors, and acupuncturists who all told me their area of specialty was where my problem lay while providing no solutions, Dr. Lay was the first and only provider who gave me an answer that actually made sense. After a massage and few quick adjustments I was good as new. Headaches were gone and I could live my life again. He doesn't insist on unnecessary treatment plans and I love that I can usually get in within 48 hours if I start having trouble again. After my last adjustment, it was almost 10 months before I had a problem again (I was having multiple headaches daily every few weeks prior). This is a great Chiropractor, he knows how to do a proper adjustment. The complimentary massage is wonderful! The girls know how to work out those tough muscles and I require a lot of firm pressure. Then you have the roller table to work your muscles before your adjustment! This place is excellent ! Everything I'm used to getting at a visit. The only downfall is the parking garage if you have an oversized vehicle. great location and they offer free parking downtown but for a large vehicle it's almost impossible to get around the parking garage. I was in a car accident in February that forced me to seek out chiropractic help. I have trained horses for 13 years which have caused NUMEROUS broken bones aside from scoliosis and a reverse curve in my neck. When you have this many skeletal issues you try your best to avoid chiropractors because they always HURT- so trust me when I say I was a skeptic when I first walked into Dr. Lay's office. After my adjustments with Dr Lay and the soft tissue treatments I am feeling SO MUCH BETTER. Like, I can actually breathe! And sleep on my side!! And I can look to the right now!! And yeah, sometimes the soft tissue treatments are a little intense- that's to be expected when you have knots in your muscles! But Dr. Lay never hurts me. All I have to say is that Dr. Lay is a miracle worker!! I threw my back out on one of my trips to the gym while doing a back workout. I could hardly get in and out of my car to get in to see him. Man, I was in bad shape. I got a nice 20-30 min. massage to start out with and an assessment from Dr. Lay. He would not even touch my back without sending me to go have an MRI done to see if he was about to do more damage than good. Once he had information from the x-rays he started to fix me up. It took several visits to get me back to normal. He is happy to fit you in at a moments notice and the staff there are awesome as well. Nice clean office and free parking along with the fact that he accepts insurance are all pluses in my book. I go in for a tune-up now and then and feel like a new man when I do. I was in an accident awhile back. Did the needed treatment with a few different doctors, a chiropractor included and was released from treatment. Every now and then, I can feel that tightness in my back and neck coming back. Out of convenience, I decided to give San Jacinto Chiropractic a try. Let me say, the staff, including Dr. Lay are extremely nice. After the first visit, I thought, having that massage therapy in addition to the adjustment is brilliant. That was until my back drastically reacted to what what happening. It began to hurt to laugh or cough. I couldn't figure out what could have possibly happened, until about the 3rd visit in. He explained that my muscles had pulled my ribs out of place. My back was so inflamed you could see it when I was lying on my stomach. He recommended I come in more frequently to get it corrected. I had a conversation with a co-worker, who just so happened to have the same rib issue when they went to Dr. Lay's office. That's when I discovered that the girls in the office doing the massages, are only trained by Dr. Lay. Definitely not a sufficient amount of training. I have created this account solely to review Dr. Jim Lay. I feel so grateful to him for his excellent care, affordable pricing and kindness that I feel the least I can do is tell people about how awesome he and his staff are. The staff are all really nice and will answer all of your questions and explain the whole process to you. And unlike other offices, they can try and fit you in on the same day you call. It's clear Dr. Lay really cares about helping people and they are willing to work with you on price. For an impoverished student, that's really important. Despite my bad back, I wasn't sure I could afford chiropractic care since my insurance won't cover it. I can't tell you how much better my back feels. Three comments: First, if you tell Dr. Lay that you hurt your back a year ago and didn't really do anything about it, he will give you a blank stare that conveys his patience, disappointment and makes you feel like an idiot. Apparently after suffering a mild back injury you shouldn't ignore it until it becomes debilitating. You can tell that curing back pain is really important to him, after all he's made it his career. Second, I learned that any level of dehydration contributes to back pain on my first visit. Drink up! I'm chronically dehydrated and it has not helped my back. This is an easy, cheap way to help yourself even before you see Dr. Lay. Third, this hardly needs to be mentioned but follow all the instructions Dr. Lay and his staff give you. He's spending his time to fix your back and you are spending money. Dr. Lay and his staff are amazing. I highly recommend them to anyone seeking chiropractic care. read more

Dr. Lay has been a godsend! After moving to Austin from St. Louis, Mo., I had to find a new chiropractor. Having been with my previous doctor for so long, the change was a bit stressful. I've suffered from chronic back pain due to old sports injuries as well as from a car accident some years ago.
