As a graduate student, I come here…read morebecause I genuinely need a quiet space to study, yet the study rooms are almost never available. Today, one of the already limited study rooms was reserved for two hours for staff to hang up materials. The room was sitting completely empty, so we used it, but multiple staff members came over and immediately made us leave. Over 30 minutes later, the room was still empty and nothing had been hung up. It's frustrating to see valuable study space kept unavailable when students are actively trying to use it. One staff member also questioned us about how long we had been studying and accused our group of making reservations under different names. This felt unnecessarily confrontational, especially since the posted sign states that you may continue using a room past your two-hour reservation if nobody else is waiting. We followed that rule, yet were repeatedly told the room was "reserved," despite nobody actually using it. I completely understand having policies and reservation limits, but they should be applied reasonably and consistently. Graduate students and others who come here specifically to study depend on these spaces. Limited study rooms should prioritize people who are actually there to study rather than sitting empty for extended periods.

But shame on me: in recent years, I've contributed to the slow unraveling of American society by shunning the small but community-centric offerings of the local public library. I want to blame TV and the internet, Amazon and TikTok, but that's a childish dodge, obvious and irresponsible, like blaming the rain for ruining my car's interior, instead of myself, for not putting up my windows. Libraries are - have always been - more than simple book repositories. They're classrooms; study halls; venues for public meetings; and "third places", where people can relax and interact with folks other than those they know from home and at work. Like many Americans, I've found technologies and places to stand in for the library. Much of the research and reading I do, I do online; and when I want the bustle of strangers, I sit in coffee shops. [half-hour long pause] I was going to add something here about the charming old-fashioned American tradition of submitting ballots at a library or other public venue, and I was going to ruefully assert that COVID-19 is to blame for my having stopped doing so. But COVID-19 isn't the threat it used to be, and the ugly truth is that I'm afraid to go into crowds of gun-totin', antisocial, right-wing extremist MAGA nutjobs whose attention is focused on politics, and who would rather see their fellow citizens shot dead than to see their candidates lose fair elections. I miss the library, but I'm not willing to die for it.

Coming here unlocked so many childhood memories of visiting here with my grandparents. My…read moregrandparents lived a few blocks away and we would walk to the library at least twice a week so I could borrow the library maximum because I was such a little bookworm. It's a small neighborhood branch of the library, if you're looking for something larger go to the one in downtown La Mesa. This location is perfect for kids though. They've got events for kids and a nice little kids room. It's pretty much how I remember it being all those years ago. If you're like me you probably don't browse as much as you go online and order what you want for pickup, so this location fills that need well. The holds shelves are located right next to the door and the self checkout kiosks are across from there, so if you're antisocial you can get everything and leave without interacting with a human. I went to the desk because I had a question and the employee was super friendly and helpful. I prefer this location because it's really convenient as far as parking and running in goes. They have two hour street parking in front and a small parking lot in the back, no steps if you've got any mobility problems or a stroller. Hours are posted online, but they are closed Sunday and Monday, something to keep in mind. The book depository is in front to the right of the entrance as well as the drop off ballot box that we use every election.

Best library in San Diego…read more pros. - There is a park on the other side of the parking lot. - There is a courtyard in front of the library ( benches to sit_ - there is a conference room in the building next door ( I went to their "movie day", see their online posing about that). - individual study rooms ( always one of the 3 available). - Is open 6 days a week. - On Mondays through Friday, their hours are either 9 am to 5 or 8 pm ( other public libraries are either 9 am t6o 5 pm or 11:30 am to 8 pm). Cons - I cannot think of any. I am a nursing student, so a medical library is ideal. There are anatomical models which was helpful for my anatomy class. This library has separate study rooms, which is nice when you want to get work done in a quiet space ( not that the library is ever loud). It is clean, well kept (I can say the same thing about the park next door). I come here to study, then I eat my lunch and sit in the courtyard. Other public libraries have a lot going on (classes, reading times for kids, and that makes noise). This feels more like a library at a medical college where med students study then have coffee and food in the courtyard. Other libraries have a patio, but is only available when the library is open. This courtyard is accessible anytime ( so if you get there 30 minutes before the library opens, you still have somewhere to sit and have your coffee). Coffee machine not included

If you're lucky to get one of the rooms, that's the only way this place would be worth it or if you just wanna sit on one of the chairs and read a book. But to bring my laptop or books and be able to study is pretty much luck of the draw.
