My lamb main had 7 pieces of lamb and the rogan josh gravy was mild and a good portion. As it's a first visit I didn't know the spice levels and this dish was mild for me. The nan bread was delicious. I tried my wife's quite red tikka massala and I could detect the back note of Sharwoods tikka massala from a jar which slightly disappointed me.

Nine of us were booked in for a Saturday night curry at 8pm and they were ready for us, or so we thought. We ordered drinks, poppadoms, chutney trays, starters and mains as normal - a few of us decided to forego the starter for just a main course. Had we known that we'd all be waiting nearly an hour to be served the starters we'd have demanded piles of extra poppadoms for free. Having to ask twice where our food was was unacceptable to say the least. The waiter couldn't have been less bothered. I struggled to figure out whether it was a case of them having too few staff being over-worked, or too many staff doing sweet F.A. Needless to say, the majority of the group who had starters were disappointed with the end result. They were saved from a Eek! 1 star review because the main courses, especially the naan breads, were, on the whole, pretty good and decently sized. Obviously, the latter. Bombay Spice apparently replaced the bizarrely (and awesomely) named Chutney Lobster restaurant. It could seat around 40 people I'd say, the decor is pretty typical of Indian eat-ins these days. The menu too, is nothing out of the ordinary. Not feeling like drinking alcohol this time, we decided to try their Mango Lassi so got a large jug of it to share. It's £7.50 but absolutely delicious. We started with the mandatory papadums and chutney tray, which was generous to say the least (stinginess on the chutney tray is a pet peeve of mine). For mains, my friend had the Chicken Balti and I, as always, chose the Chicken Saag. We shared sides of pilau rice, chips and a peshwari naan. Everything arrived well presented and piping hot. When we saw the chips were crinkle-cut we immediately reminisced about eating them as kids - more places should serve these! The food was all very good indeed, flavoursome, well cooked and generously sized. Service was efficient and friendly, we didn't feel too pestered throughout the meal. The bill came to a reasonable £33 in total. There are a fair few Indian restaurants in close proximity, but Bombay Spice has set a decent benchmark.

They take reservations and your table will be ready. The food is outstanding. I'm taking my daughter to England this weekend (we are from Florida) and this is literally on our agenda the weekend we get in. The food is so flavorful and delicious. It's best to go with a lot of people so you can try a bit of everything! We loved everything we tried but the chicken tikka masala with the sweet naan with the honey is the best! I had a really excellent fish pakora to start and then one of the chef's specials as a main. The naan bread (the make or break element of a curry for me) was perfect so I was very happy. It was really busy and people were being turned away on a Thursday evening which is always a sign of good food. As a result I'd recommend booking a table in advance. You can get the metrolink to Altrincham then a taxi down to Hale or the train goes all the way there. This place really stands out from some of the samey average/poor curry houses in south Manchester.

After a recent disappointment trying Lamb Nihari at another curry place, I was straight back to ordering my favourite dish (Chicken Saag) and it was terrific. Though I had to fight for enough naan bread with my family I could have eaten a whole one it was delicious. Everyone else's meals looked and tasted good and as a couple of the portions were too big to finish, they boxed them up for us to take home. There were plenty of people stopping by to pick up their takeaway orders so this place is popular - I'll be trying this out soon as well no doubt.

In these competitive environs, Akbar's holds its own with its gigantic naans and its flavorful curries. The offal-based offerings, such as maghaz (sheep's brain) masala and chicken liver tikka, are my personal favorites. The maghaz has a creamy, buttery texture and loads of flavor. The perfectly chewy naan is a great accompaniment to both dishes. A steaming cup of the sweet and salty Kashmiri chai is a perfect way to finish a meal on a cold Manchester winter evening (I usually find myself in Northern England around Christmastime).

Despite the venue being packed, food arrived quickly, and it was just delicious - couldn't find any faults! For those who feel adventurous, there are chef's challenges with spicy food (I heard you get s free dessert if you finish it- however , can't vouch for this). I have tried a tiny piece of this challenge from my friends plate, and almost cried from the amount of hot spices! Despite the wait, very enjoyable experience, and prices are more than friendly, which is very unusual for the city centre.

So…read moreafter arriving at our hotel, we checked for local Indian places to eat at, and Amma's Canteen popped up with great reviews (which indeed they lived up to) and when we called to make a booking, we were in luck and they had a spare table for four. They are only open for dinner and we ordered the following menu items: 1) Stuffed Kozhukattai - what a fabulous starter! Plus came with a sauce called "Poor Man's Dip" which was fabulously peanutty and coconutty! These are basically wontons stuffed with lovely curried veggies. 2) Masala Dosa - Really light and oil-free Dosa! My mum wasn't a fan due to lots of ginger in the potatoes but I didn't mind that spice making its presence felt. Really enjoyed the earthiness of the Sambar too. 3) Spinach & Red Kidney Bean Dosa - this was a revelation!! Honestly I was very dubious about this combination but with the beautiful spices that are dry roasted with the red kidney beans and the perfectly blanched spinach, I loved the taste of the Dosa. When the owner came and chatted to us later, he said the reason for this combo was because these are three of his very fave things to eat, and so he played around with the combination till he got it right. I am glad he persisted and my tummy benefited from his experimentation! Probably my fave thing from the menu! 4) Kaikari mandi with Oothappam - lots of winter vegetables in a most interesting curry and Utthapham (which is a rice+lentil pancake). I found this menu item to be a bit muddled in its tastes. Not sure this combo worked for me, but individually, both items were delicious. I liked the mandi curry more with rice. This too had a bit of a good spicy kick to it. 5) Alleppey Fish curry with steamed rice - my brother got this and holy moly! Dense and rich coconut curry with a beautifully cooked fish. This had a spicy bite to it, but delicious. Probably my second fave menu item. 6) Trio of dessert - we were full from earlier menu items, but the table next to us ordered it, and then we couldn't resist. One cool surprise was the roasted rice used as a topping on top of the carrot halwa - never seen that done before at a restaurant and it worked well. The Gulab Jamun was hot and tasted great and the Milk-Payasam was light, and not massively sweet at all. Great end to the meal. It's a really well curated menu, with lots of items that I haven't seen in restaurants previously. Amma means mother and I really did feel like I was eating a home-cooked meal. Plus there were so many dishes I was unfamiliar with, as I believe this is a Kerala region restaurant, and so the cuisine is something I'm not that familiar with. I also really enjoyed the fact the Owner came out later to chat with us and get feedback on the meal - it was great talking to him and letting him know how much we enjoyed the food. The style is nepalese so you will find some different dishes on the menu compared to the standard curry house selling kormas to vindaloos. All the food appears to be cooked fairly freshly, with peppers found within the sauces still having crunch to them, and onions still looking fresh. I fully recommend the Lamb Karahi dish, and the Muttar Paneer is an awesome vegetarian dish, oh and the poppadoms are fantastic with spices cooked through them with lovely dips to go with them. Beer prices are reasonable, although higher in cost than a pub, but thats usually to be expected in restaurants. All in all i fully recommend trying out the third eye, and you can always go out in didsbury for a few drinks afterwards.

Curries are without doubt my favourite food, so I've had a good few and since working for Yelp I have set myself the task of really locating the finest curry houses in Manchester. The Original Third Eye fully deserves to enter in at the top, alongside my other favourites, Punjab in Rusholme, Moon in Withington, and The Original Lal Qila on Deansgate. The name Original Third Eye comes from one of the finest restaurants in Kathmandu, though it is also a reference to the concept of the all Seeing Eye, a central emblem of Buddhist thought that is depicted on many temples and shrines throughout Nepal. The restaurant itself is large, and spacious, with authentic decoration and a smart, but still nicely informal, table arrangement. The food is literally unbelievable. Needless to say they sell all the usual traditional curry dishes, including an extensive fish list, but the main specialties are something new and unusual, a curry with a little something extra, taking it to that next level of joy and producing happiness and glee in their very consumption. The kidney kebab starter for example, combines classic kebab spices with beautiful marinated lamb kidney. Also beautiful is the Third Eye Tangri, which mixes chicken with minced lamb and nuts, a surprising and beautiful combination. In terms of mains, go directly to either the seafood menu or the Third Eye Specials section, on which everything is gorgeous. The piece de resistance, is the Murghi Masala, a whole chicken marinated in wonderful spices. This dish is so precisely crafted, that you in fact need to give 24 hours notice, and at least two people need to share it. I think that epitomizes this restaurant's absolute class. So I end on that note.
