Highly suggest changing into a bathing suit and doing the approximate 2 mile hike to the falls. On the way, you'll see a lot of smaller falls and some spots where you can go and splash your feet in the water. I came after a spotty storm and the trail was a little bit wet so it'd be good to bring some grippy shoes. There are a couple of stones and rocks and roots to wander through. It's definitely worth a trip and the three dollar parking fee charge since it's a national car unless you have a national park pass that you can leave on your dash the national Park pass is roughly 60 or $70 per year unless you're military or have a disability and you can get it for free. There are a couple of bathrooms at the start of the trail and nowhere near the Falls to change

I stayed in the lodge in room 305, which had a lovely…read morebalcony with Adirondack chairs to sit in overlooking the trees and the playground/ fire pit area. It was not busy at all, not noisy, and had plenty to do just at the lodge! There's a full service restaurant, drinks, and a gazebo as well as an exhibit on WV in the hallways by the conference rooms. The trails were marked well enough, though some were closed, but even the green space was nice to walk around in. My favorite thing though, was the animal exhibit. Mandy the bear, who's an impressive 28 year old black bear, is adorable, and loves peanuts. Barry was awesome and had great information on not just Mandy, but all the residents at the wildlife center, including bobcats, a Barred Owl, and a sweetheart of an Eurasian Boar named Mo. Warning!! The Tomblin Pass between the two park areas is a whopping 16% grade, so if you are going to the campground with a trailer, don't come in exit 30 for the lodge way but the park entrance near town. It's gorgeous up on the pass, but steeeep and windy. The road is in excellent shape though, if you take it slow and easy, you should be fine without hauling too much behind you.

One issue I've had with most of the stops in WV is the lack of information. I would of loved to of known where the cabin was from, what year it was from, the general history. Alas, there was no plaques to be read. It was locked due to vagrants. Supposedly they will open it up during reenactment days. It's peaceful and beautiful in the fall. It never seemed too busy the two times I drove through. There are restrooms, but I didn't partake. There are also picnic tables available. A man made pond for fishing was being actively used. I am not sure what fish are stocked in it. I did get to see a deer and apparently they're fed or not people shy as it was in the parking lot close to people nearby. Hopefully this doesn't become a problem, particularly during rut. We walked a small trail just to get out and enjoy the rare 81 degrees in November. It was peaceful. I could see myself spending a lot of time here. Volunteers were busy setting up holiday displays of different characters. They do a Christmas drive thru light show, but I will sadly be missing it.

The mountains are just as beautiful as they have always been. Maybe a little worn down over the ages (ok, sometimes I just feel old). The overlooks are pretty fantastic. We went to the tunnel overlook. We went the "long" way. You can go to the second parking lot from the Visitor center for a much quicker hike, but it wasn't an epic journey through tunnels of mountain laurel and rhododendrons. Your choice for the jungle experience or the straight run. Once there, the views of the tower and tunnel were spectacular. We also stopped at the Lodge Restaurant for lunch. It was just an awesome, calming time. I really wish we had spent days instead of an afternoon. Maybe when I retire, we will stay longer in the fall. I had the club sandwich which was really good. The fries in it were just the way I like them: crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. Waitress was good & prompt which checks all the boxes for me. DEFINITELY recommend this for a visit. Whatever your outdoor criteria is, this place will meet it.

Believe them when they say they are strenuous, though! The Bottom of the Breaks Trail is stunning, but it's quite a trek! The lodge is set up hotel style, and the Dogwood Lodge is pet friendly! I saw an elk and so many deer! Hit all the overlooks, hike the trails, eat at the restaurant, and stay somewhere in this gorgeous park! There's a lake and nearby rivers if you are a boater or a paddler!

The New River is apparently quite long, because this is nowhere near the more reputed New River…read moreGorge National Park. However, even in Virginia it is quite majestic. The main park office lies in a historic hamlet surrounded by farms. A parking charge applied, and if you parked somewhere else along the extensive trail perhaps you could get by without it, but the sights were certainly well worth seeing. I made it maybe a mile down the trail to a riverbend overlooked by a bluff ideally suited for sunsets, but there was a lot more to explore. Some boating was available, and a horse seemed interested to meet me as I departed.

There is a stage for events and a large covered picnic shelter with pit BBQ. Clean bathrooms. Playing field and what looks like a horse jump area. The park has wooded areas surrounding it... only thing is it is across from a waste center but while I was there this was okay just heard trucks backing up occasionally. Watch out for bees in the clover flowers. Must where shoes here!

The park here contains some sidewalks both at street level as well as closer to (but not on) the water, as well as an amphitheater and a few other facilities. I visited once when the street was closed to make way for a festival; festivals are nice but the notion of closing a street rather than having a real park seemed not that great. When there's no event going on, it's not the most happening place. Some work has been done on the area, and perhaps more will be done.
