Typical old school diner food. If you want food that you can get at home that you just don't feel like cooking, Sam's Kitchen will solve your problems. My food was just okay. I got the tbone steak and eggs. I had to put salt and pepper on the steak. I have never done that with my steak. The home fries are good though and the service is friendly. They seemed overwhelmed----only two servers around 10am. But I asked for my eggs to be recooked and they obliged without hesitation. I appreciated that. read more

This place is located around the corner in a strip mall so you cannot see the front of it until you pull into the parking lot. I am mentioning this because it confused me the 1st time I went. I have only every gone for breakfast. This is a solid hearty breakfast place. Nothing to set the world on fire, but not everything needs to be knock-your-socks-off. Sometimes familiar and filling is what you need. The place was really busy the Sunday morning we went so we had a longer wait for our food than some of the other reviewers. All the staff are very friendly and made sure that the liquids kept coming as we waited. I had an omelet and biscuits. Both were tasty, but the biscuits at the Cavalier diner are better. I really wanted to like this place enough to give it more than two stars. I love local, tucked away spots. Finding them is like mining diamonds...or at least I had hoped it would be. We decided to have breakfast thinking if it's good enough to be offered all day, it must be pretty good. It was edible, but nothing I would crave. My family had sausage patties, plain pancakes, walnut pancakes, grits, white toast, scrambled eggs, chocolate milk, and coffee. If I had to say something stood out, I'd say, "the server was really nice." It was like Waffle House, but not. If you want a Southern-style home-cooked meal served by pleasant folks, this is a good go-to. While every other place we tried to get in before a concert was packed, we got right in to Sam's. The potato skins were great and the entrees were too much food. The Swiss mushroom burger was OK but the sweet potato fries were good. The mac and cheese was bland but the fried chicken was perfectly cooked and got rave reviews from the fam. True southern sweet tea. Stopped here for dinner while passing through, looking for something local. I was excited to see the parking lot full, but it turned out everyone was going to the nearby Mexican restaurant. Sam's was almost empty and had kind of an outdated look to it. I ordered the BBQ Rib special, with baked beans and mac and cheese. The food was all very good, honestly better than I was expecting. The food is always perfect, with a minimal wait time from the time of ordering and I cannot say enough on how awesome the staff is. Solid place for a classic, low-key brunch. I came with a group of 9 people on a Saturday morning at 9:30. We had a reservation, but it wasn't extremely crowded. Service was on the slow side, but the staff was very nice. I had the "little dragon" sampler from the kids' menu (a slice of French toast, a piece of bacon, and a fried egg), as well as a cup of grits with cheese, and an English muffin. I loved that they had a variety of side dishes and sampler platters of different sizes, so you can try lots of different dishes without having too much food. Great prices! read more

I am a bit of a food snob. I dislike imitation or overly processed food. Everything seemed to have high-fructose corn syrup as one of the main ingredients. I would rate the quality of the breakfast food at par with a hotel or iHop. The bathrooms could use a really good scrubbing too. I understand that not everyone is as picky, so I am rating this diner a bit higher. Having said all that, what makes this place worth the visit is the staff. We've gone to Sam's for years and besides some slow service (which isn't a huge deal) it's always been a good experience. We went today and had the younger waitress with dark hair wait on us. Food took about 40 minutes and about the time we were thinking of leaving she came out with it even though she'd delivered the check 20 minutes prior with no food on the table. We got two of the same orders - eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, toast and coffee. Pretty easy. She didn't bring toast or coffee which we then asked for. 20 more minutes and we'd finished lunch so we gave up on the missing items. I told the new owner about it and the waitress overheard and came over and she was ticked. Told me and the owner we'd never asked her for it, called me a b*tch and continued to call names, yell and threaten to beat my a**. All over toast and coffee - that she forgot. They took 4$ off for the missing items - whatever - and I paid that but as she continued to run her mouth I eventually got angry enough that I snapped back and asked for a refund for the entire order, which his wife gave me. We will never, ever go there again. I'm not sure what is wrong with that girl (besides being hormonal because she announced she was 14 weeks pregnant) but nothing is worth all that. I don't expect them to stay open long with people like that. It's a shame because the waitstaff has always been so nice and it was a decent place to go for lunch and breakfast. After a long day of hiking in Shenandoah National Park, my friends and I were starving and ready for some authentic home-style food. Sam's served up a solid list of well-prepared specials and an authentic roster of sides, from corn pudding to cold pickled beets, and everything in between. My wife had the meatloaf, which was delicious and filling, with a rich brown gravy. I had the indulgent and finger-licking BBQ chicken. The sauce was sweet (but not too sweet) with just the right amount of spice. Vinegar came on the side with my collard greens, corn bread mopped up the remains, and it was all washed down with an ice cold glass of draft beer. A horribly dirty place I had to walk out. Underneath the tables were so nasty and so dirty the ceiling is filthy all that tacky decore they have probably hasn't been dusted and years. If the front of the house is so filthy I can't imagine what the back of the house looks like a place for Gordon Ramsay to go with his show. Small wait for a to go order during a rush which is normal. Had the gyro, the tzatziki sauce was somewhat bland and needed more dill. It did not come with feta cheese but that was stated in the menu, so no big deal, if I hadn't read the menu so fast I would have asked for it to be added. Don't let the Yelp rating deceive you. Sams kitchen is utterly unremarkable. Place looks run down and poorly cared for. Service staff is not friendly and came by the table once after ordering. This would be forgiveable is the good was any good-it's not. It's the most standard, boring diner food you can imagine. Worse than IHOP because at least IHOP has corporate quality control. Everything was boring, unoriginal. Portions were adequate but who cares if the food sucks. On top of all that, it's not even a good deal. You could eat at IHOP for less money!! Don't let the yelp stars fool you. SAMs kitchen is a waste of your time in a city with as much great good as Charlottesville. read more
